Product Questions

I have a 48" fixture with 2 metal halide double end bulbs and 4 actinic 65w compact florescent bulbs. My question is that the metal halide bulbs do not have any numbers on them and neither do the ballast, so how do I tell if they are 150w or 250w?
Question by: Ed Sawyer on May 15, 2020, 9:47 AM
Hi Ed,

The best way to differentiate between a 150w and a 250w DE metal halide bulb is the form of the bulb itself. The ends of the 150 will have small ceramic cylinders on the ends like the bulb pictured on this page. https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/phoenix-metal-halide-14k-double-end-bulb.html
The socket for the bulb will have small metal pins that fit into the small indentations on the ends of the bulb.

A 250 watt bulb will have metal "blade" type endcaps that seat into slots in the fixtures sockets.
You can see this type of bulb on this page https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/hamilton-metal-halide-10k-double-end-bulb.html

I hope this helps!
Happy Reefing

It says how deep of water iw will go down to but if u keep ur hood 1ft min above surface for heat i do this how much does that change the game as far as getting dow to my plates acans etc but have seasons greetings & big red digie so can i achieve both corals getting proper light at 1ft or more or is there a standard height to keep hood sry if tmi but im struggling finding straight answer LFS is guessing lol i guess LED'S have spoiled them

Great question!
The light when mounted higher will have a wider spread across the tank. This 1 foot of air will not hinder the light penetration too much however it does spread the light out further depending on the fixture itself. You of course can tell by seeing how the corals respond to the light or with the use of a PAR meter, but in many cases for deeper tanks (24"+) a larger wattage is required. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

Are the 150w and 250w bulbs interchangeable?
Question by: ciso on Jan 26, 2016, 10:53 PM
Hey there,
They are interchangeable depending on the ballast used. As long as the ballast can handle the correct wattage it will work well! Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!
