Better than no chiller by Modit
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 3/15/2009 from CA UNITED STATES
Comments: I didn't buy my 1/15 hp Current chiller from here but wanted to provide a review. I have used it for almost a year. This chiller is not quiet when it is chilling - considerably louder than either of my refrigerators. It had various rattles from the start. I was able to reduce the rattles a little by placing a few diving weights on the top and removed the plastic screen from in front of the filter. Like another review stated, this chiller generally does not keep the water at the set temperature. I also wish the temperature regulated within +/- 1 degree instead of +/- 2 degrees. The plug for the heater is a nice feature, but I don't use it. If your stock is not too temperature sensitive and you don't mind the noise it is a fine chiller. I would never recommend running a salt water aquarium without a chiller.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Have had this chiller for a year and a half with no problems. Great product and runs like a charm. The piece of mind this provided was well worth the price. Very happy with this purchase!

Comments: I have had this for a month and so far so good. It really helped me have ease of mind during my first heat wave with this tank. There are two cons I have found with this. 1) The casing makes a rattling noise when the chiller is operating which I have had to put weight on the top to make it function more quietly. Once I did this it is absolutely whisper quiet (the unit itself was not damaged during shipping or anything because this thing came within THREE sequentially larger boxes). 2) The temperature you set it at is not the temperature it keeps the water at!!! For some reason there is a 2, 3 or 4 degree grace (which you can set) before it turns on. I really don't like this. Maybe there is a reason for it that I don't know, but I should be able to make it so there isn't a margin of error. As a result I have to set the margin of error to 2 degrees and just set the chiller two degrees colder than I want it. Other than this it looks very nice and comes with screw pipe clams (it does not come with tubing so be sure you get that on your own).
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

A successfull gamble. by Henk

Posted on 8/7/2008 from HELMOND, NETHERLANDS
Comments: Despite living in the Netherlands the need for a chiller became apparent these summer days. This chiller looked fit for the intended use to bring down the water in my 50 gallon freshwater aquarium to 68F in the morning from 75F in the afternoon. Had to provide for 115V AC from our 230V AC lines, but 50c/s was the gamble. After only 2 day's use I'm already impressed by it: chilling power looks ample, no problem at all to install. Pity there is no "pump on board", alas. There is some noise, but no problem: chilling is overnight, of course (as mother Nature does). Moreover: it looks great! Many thanks!
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: This chiller is great for tanks under 50 gallons; cools with ease. Set up is a breeze: locate about 2feet away from wall, add in/out tubes(I used my return pump as the chiller pump, using a ball valve to regulate flow), plug in, set thermostat, and enjoy. Make sure you clean the filter, have the right amount of flow( min. 350gph), and make sure there is about 2feet around the chiller to let air pass with ease.

Comments: Excellent temperature controll. Has worked flawless for 6+months. Noisy but tolerable. Easy set up and programming. Can not expect more for the money. Keeps temp 73-75 steady on a 120Gal tank. Controls heater (300W).

1/3 hp modular chiller by KEN SOMMER
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 8/2/2008 from SPRING, TX UNITED STATES
Comments: I did like the 1 inch connections but this chiller is very loud. The outside plastic case is very brittle and arrived broken. I sent it back because the description says that it is ulta quiet but not for your living room. It also does not have a dust filter and I spoke with the manufacturer and they said they are probably not going to offer this chiller next year.

Comments: This is a decent chiller. It needs tons of air flow around it, so make sure you have space for that (2ft by 2ft). I used a Maxi Jet 1200 for the pump, which works well. It was easy to install. I have a 30 Gal cube sps tank with a 30 Gal fuge, approximately 40-45 G of water. It cools the amount of water ok. For the price, you probably wont find anything comparable.

Chiller by MIKE WOLF
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 7/6/2008 from BUTLER, PA UNITED STATES
Comments: This chiller was just what I needed for my tank. Since installing it, which was very easy, my tube worms, coral, and fish are doing much better. It maintains the water temperature within a one and a half degree range. The noise made by the chiller is less than the lower sump on my eco-system. The temperature setting is not lost during a power failure, which, just knowing that, is a big comfort . I used a power head matched to the recommended flow rate for the chiller and placed the power head in the lower sump. The return from the chiller is also returned to the lower sump but behind a baffle which helps to mix the warmer water from above with the chilled water. The only down side to this unit is it can not be placed inside the cabinet or any other cabinet as it needs to dissipate the heat. The cost is well worth it considering the potential loss of costly livestock.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I bought this for a 50 gallon tank so far it is working great, we are in the the middle of a heat wave already 100+ and its doing fine. You definatly need to have good air flow around the unit as it puts off a lot of heat.

Comments: Have been using this chiller for about a month now with an eheim 1260 to power it, on a 90gal tank. Have not had any problems. temperature has been rock solid. never above seventy-eight where I've had it set. before the chiller the tank consistently ran 83-85 with the lights on!

noisy, but effective by SunsetRocker

Comments: i have had this chiller in service now for nearly 2 years. it does its job well. temps stay whereever i set them and my tanks inhabitants are healthy and thiriving. before i purchased this unit temps would spike upwards of mid 90s in my 40 gallon reef tank. now i can maintain sub 78. only complaint is the noise. you have to set it up in a place that has plenty of air circulation (no in-cabinet or closet set-ups)and when it 'kicks' on the noise can drive you up the wall.

1/15 HP Chiller by JOHN BLIZARD

Posted on 5/20/2008 from ALEXANDRIA, VA UNITED STATES
Comments: Very quiet; hard to tell when it's running, easy to set up, seems to be a very well made product. One minor complaint-the clamps supplied with the chiller are too small for the larger size hose that goes on the supplied fittings.

not happy with this product by ALFONSO SALAZAR

Posted on 3/1/2008 from TWENTYNINE PALMS, CA UNITED ST
Comments: 6 months after I purchased this product it started to rattle. So, I emailed Current USA to tell them about the problem. They gave me some technical explanation about what could be wrong that didn't solve anything. Pretty much they told me to fix it myself. This product keeps the temperature steady BUT, the loud rattling noise in my living room is very annoying. The only reason I have not thrown it away is because I can't afford to get another one right now. If the one I bought went bad so could yours.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I gave the chiller a four star because I was unable to install the uv sterilizer with out breaking the quartz sleeve. This happened twice. I was able to order just the sleeve through marinedepot after contacting current USA. The tech. at current was very helpful and I will contact them again to install the uv for the third time. The heater did not include the necessary adapter and I had to order that through another company.(I'M SURE MARINEDEPOT HAS IT BUT IT WAS NOT LISTED UNDER ACCESSORIES). The chiller is running great and keeping the temperature constant. I would purchase it again, although I would like to see the uv inlet made more sturdy so the sleeve would not break so easily.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: While I must admit the chiller did a great job of keeping the tank from over heating, nearly loosing everything because of a major leak (twice) wasn't worth it! They did replace the first unit after it leaked, but after the replacement leaked, I gave up and bought an LED fixture, and no longer need a chiller.

Got the new unit by JOHN

Posted on 9/1/2007 from CA UNITED STATES
Comments: So I took out my jbj and put in the new 1/3 hp with a Litle Giant series 2 and well it was just plain loud, and slow. The item it self is not well built, the face plate has two push in tabs that don't stick and the face plate comes off. Also why would I only get the option to run 5/8 to it. The only barbs that come with it for hook up are way to small for some one running a 1/3 hd. I mean come on here. it should be 1 inch or maybe offer a 1/2 with a thred option but most people who would buy this run external pumps at 1 to 1/2 inch. it was not an item I could get at Lowes to hook this up so that in it self took me to re-pipe my system to fit this in. It also took a long time to drop, and it hold to about 1* or so, but I take a true temp and find that it is off a tad. Further you cant set it to 75.5* as I could with other units. This help for dead on settings due to the temp not being correct in the chiller vs my in tank probe. Would I but another one. I dont know but as far as my old Artic, I want it back.
