400W 10000K METAL HALIDE SINGLE ENDED BULB - Ushio

This German-made Ushio 10000K metal halide bulb offers excellent coloration and intensity. Crisp Ice White appearance, full spectrum - the combination of different wavelengths produce different colors in the spectrum and appear to the naked eye as crisp ice white light. Significantly brighter than U.S. made 10000K bulbs. Use alone or add Actinics for a bluer effect. This bulb has a heavy concentration wavelength spike in the 420 and 460nm (nanometer) range with additional concentration spikes in the 380nm, 550nm and 580nm wavelengths. Tested in Germany - simulates natural daylight as in the ocean at depths up to 13 feet. Longer life - TRUE-10000K Metal Halide has an exceptionally high rated life. Very High Color Rendering Index of 95 CRI. Actinic supplementation may be used to create a bluer look.  An excellent choice for reef tanks 24" or deeper. on how the different Kelvin ratings appear and more information on metal halide bulbs.

Common questions/problems concerning metal halide lamps:

  1. Metal halide lamps of the same kind are different colors?
Metal halide lamps operate by passing an electric arc through an arc tube that excites particles in the arc tube. When the metal particles reach an excited state they emit energy in the form of visible light. It takes 100 hours of operation before the metal particles stabilize and become a consistent color. All metal halides require 100 hours of operation before color and light output stabilize. All metal halides inherently have a slight color variation between individual lamps.
  2. The metal halide lamp fires and then either burns dull or the arc extinguishes?
Usually the ballast and lamp are not receiving enough power. Metal halides pull a high current. Usually the problem is either there is too great a load on the circuit or the extension cords are of a small wire size and can`t handle the power needed by the ballast. Use only heavy duty extension cords and try running a ballast off a circuit from another part of the house.
  3. Do I need a cover shield between the lamp and the aquarium?
Metal halide lamps produce a large amount of UV and also have a potential of exploding. The single ended metal halide lamps have an outer jacket which eliminates most of the UV. However, they have an inherent risk of exploding and UL requires metal halide lamps to be enclosed. On double ended lamps there is no UV shield. Double ended lamps must have a glass shield or major eye injuries including blindness may occur.
  4. Can I operate a ballast and lamp together which are designed for different wattages?
Each wattage lamp and ballast are designed together for optimal performance and safety. If you over drive the lamp it may explode and shorten the life of the ballast and lamps. If you under drive the lamp it will also shorten the life of both components and also may explode. Do not mix different type wattages of lamps and ballasts.
NOTE: The bulb should be handled carefully during installation and replacement.

*Requires HQI ballast, electronic ballast or pulse start ballasts to work properly.

WOW what a difference

This is my second bulb. My first bulb came with the Pendant I bought for my 35-gal marine aquarium reef. I'm new to the hobby (started the aquarium 8 months ago), and have been learning as I go by reading articles, talking to people, etc. One of the big problems I had was red algae outbreaks. The guy at the LFS kept telling me to change my light bulb. I thought that seemed so silly, like the light spectrum changes that much ... yeah right. Well, he WAS right. I finally broke down and ordered this replacement bulb. The next day when I came home and the light was on, the whole corner of my room seemed ... different. Brighter. Whiter. And it WAS! They're not kidding when they say to replace these bulbs every 8 months. I'm a believer now, and will follow that religiously. The bright white light is much more pleasing to look at than the yellow-ish light of the old bulb (same vendor/model/etc). I spent the weekend enjoying cleaning the tank, organizing the rocks, cleaning out detritus from my pump inlets, etc. My tank looks like a pro's tank now. If you can't remember when you replaced your halide bulb last, just replace it.

Halide Bulbs

I have used Ushio bulbs 250W 10,000K for about five years and I find them to out preform most Halides for growth of corals & brings out the best natural color.

Ushio 175 W 10000K MH Bulbs

I purchase 3 bulbs for my 150 gallon reef aquarium. The retrofit system I purchased from MarineDepot an incorporated into my art deco aquarium cabinet I designed and build 8 years ago, (I'm a cabinet maker) uses 3 175W metal halide and 2 96w powercompact double bulbs. Two of the bulbs work and look fine, one was defective and I just sent it back for replacement. This can happen with any bulb. The light produced is not as white as the 20000k, but that is to be expected. I purchase them because they were on special. I think they will do the job.

Awesome !!!

I have 2 of these bulbs currently in my 75g. I have only had them a short time but the light they put out is amazing. I don't think you could find a better bulb. I do reccomend acetinc (blue light) to accompany them. My fish and coral are soaking it up and loving every minute. They do put off some heat but just as long as you have some fans to accompany them it will not effect your temp. I have them about 7 inches of the water and they still have a nice penatration to the bottom. GREAT BULB!!!

Decent Bulb

These bulbs are tried and true. Mostly white color with a hint of yellow spectrum. After exchanging one defective bulb I am satisfied with the purchase.

250 Watt - Ushio Bulb

I'm very satisfied with this bulb. We just purchased (3)250 watt Ushio bulbs to replace (3) generic German bulbs we used for the last year. These Metal Halides are used with 4-96w actinics, and our corals are doing great. With all seven bulbs on, I think it's a little too yellow in appearance, but that's just personal preference. Like I said, our corals have never done better or looked as good.

Only 11 months

I ordered 2 of these bulbs back in January of this year (2007) and one of them stopped working only 11 months later. First time that I've had this short of a life span with a metal halide.
