Product Questions

Does the 60" 6 x 80w come with one fan or two?

Can i run this inside a canopy with an open top?

The manufacturer says to run the fixtures with the acrylic protective cover on at all times. How ever on your videos you have said running them with out is better. While do you recommend?
Question by: Fabian Lituma on Mar 30, 2017, 8:58 AM
Hey there,
The 60" fixture will have 2 fans for active cooling. There are some good reasons to use the protective shield, as this will prevent water splash from hitting the bulbs and reflectors, and it is also necessary in order for the fans to direct the water through the venting system and along the length of the bulbs. Since the air is draw in on one end, and passes to the other end and then out the top, the air does get warmer towards the opposite end, which results in uneven cooling and changes in bulb performance over the length of the fixture. For this reason, the alternative of having the bulbs exposed to the open air instead of running the fans allows more even output from the bulbs over the entire length and does appear to provide sufficient cooling for good bulb PAR output in some circumstances. If your canopy has an open top, this should allow for good air circulation and should be fine. You just want to avoid having the heat trapped in and around the fixture and bulbs.

Have a great day!

Hello! I have a canopy that is open in the back and the top sits about 16in off the surface of a 60x24x24. I know they do not recommend these fixtures for canopies. Why is that, and what is the advantage of retrofit kits vs. fixtures in a canopy, particulary when the fixtures have built in cooling systems?
Question by: Brad on Dec 31, 2016, 11:33 AM
Great question! The active cooling in the fixtures is exactly why they are not recommended for canopy or hooded tanks. The fans are located on the top of the fixture, and designed to draw air in. The heat generated within the housing is essentially twofold when enclosed in a hood or canopy. The retrofit kits, however, are not encased in a housing and essentially operate as an passive cooling system. :-)

I already have a 60" because i used to run it on my old 72" tank. Is it overkill to run it on my 48" tank?
Question by: Simon Camaj on Jul 17, 2016, 1:36 PM
Hi Simon,
You can easily run a longer light on your tank, the main issue being aesthetics is basically up to you and if you are OK with it being long, then that’s totally fine. The other side effect you may notice from having a longer light, is that you will get algae growth on the sides of the glass a bit quicker than if your light was properly sized.
