Best Bang For Your Buck!!! by CHRISTOPHER HALE
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 11/11/2009 from SUN CITY, CA UNITED STATES
Comments: Can't beat it for $12 bucks, especially if you've already got a Maxi-Jet, Tons of flow, wide spread not streamline so it doesn't blast your corals. Fish love it too. Just remember the white prop only works on the MJ-1200.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Surprising flow for little $$ by Jim M
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 10/26/2009 from FRANKLIN, TN UNITED STATES
Comments: I got this for my Maxijet 600 in a 29g nano and it is definitely plenty for the job. The fish seem to love playing in the extra flow and it's already knocked down an algae problem. I haven't had any of the problems with noise either. Just a barely audible click when it starts up, but no more than any of my other ph's.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I have these running on a quadrapulse wave maker and they run flawlessly. I switched out my koralia 3 pumps for these because the koralia made too much noise pulsing on and off. If you need a lot of flow for a cheap price then these are for you

Best Low Cost Wave Pump by STEVE GHERA
Experience Level: Expert
Posted on 9/19/2009 from FISHERS, IN UNITED STATES
Comments: I tried this after being frustrated when one of my SEIO P1000 propellers lost one of the lobes on its prop. I used the SEIOs with a Natural Wave wave maker for a low cost wave system. SEIOs are made by TAAM and I have to say that TAAM has a no-can-do customer service organization. I had fish stores all over the mid-West trying to get a replacement propeller with no luck. They got no response. I tried directly with the same outcome. TAAM shows a replacement part number on their web site, but just does not respond to calls/emails. Out of frustration, I switched to the Maxi-Jet and Sure Flow mod system to see how well it worked. I have to say that after 1 month, it is working great. The flow rate is about the same as the SEIO. The SEIOs do chatter when switched on (likely the root cause of the propeller failure). The MJ 400 with modification has no chatter at all. NOTE: I did run the pump for 48 hours straight without switching it off before using it with the wave maker. The advertised water movement with the MJ 400 (w/ mod.) is about 1300 gph which compares to the SEIO P1000 of 1000 gph. However, the MJ 400 w/ mod has a more dispersed discharge so the water movement is not as apparent (but it is there if you observe how much water is circulating in the tank away from the pump). So, I'm quite happy with this. NOTE: some reviews claimed that the MJ 1200 with the optional larger propeller moves so much water that some small to medium fish get trapped against the inlet vanes of the propeller shroud and can not escape (they died). My report here is with the MJ 400 and mod kit. I like to keep my in-take recirculation pumps near the surface. This pump has inlet vanes all around the propeller shroud except in one small area (anti-votexing surface). However, I found that if I get it within 3" of the surface, it does vortex. Other noted this too. So, I took some aqua-putty and smooshed it into the upper most open vanes. Viola, problem solved. I have my pump about 1-

Serious Flow by Salty Irishman

Posted on 8/29/2009 from SHERMANS DALE, PA UNITED STATE
Comments: I installed this kit on a 600 MJ in my 57 gal and now need to find a place to mount and direct it so as not to build a sand bar like I just experieced (mounted on back glass aimed at and accross the front.) My only compaint is I tried it on my wavemaker and it does make a bit of racket when starting, so elected to just leave it on and work the other PH's on a wavemaker to keep random flows. Other than that it does what I expected.

Good flow if all goes well. by MICHAEL BOERI
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 8/9/2009 from CARMEL, NY UNITED STATES
Comments: Increase in flow is good. Needed to make slight modifications to stop the noise. I don't control mine with a timer because it goes in reverse about 25% of the time, so control it with a timer. I can't use the large propeller because it always goes in reverse. A good concept for increased flow at the price, but google some mods.

Comments: This is the second set of two 'turbo-props' I bought. They really get the flow going and produce phenomenal current. I am using them with a wavemaker, which seems to work fine, even though they can be noisy when they come on (Usually they are pretty much silent). My only problem is that the metal axis rusts in saltwater and breaks off - I had them for about a year and needed to buy new ones. Still, they produce much water movement for your buck!

Good water movement by Shu

Comments: The upgrade kits really help move a lot of water in the tank...but I have had two issues: * they did not work well with my wavemaker...the starting and stopping is loud so I discontinued use of the wavemaker and let them run continuously. * there is some vibration and subsequent noise that I hope will smooth out over time.

The best upgrade!! by KENNETH SIU
Experience Level: Beginner
Posted on 3/6/2009 from RIVERVIEW, FL UNITED STATES
Comments: Holy cow, these things are exceptional. I have a 120G with 2 regular MJ1200's. I decided to get the sureflows for both of them, and since the flow in the back of the tank was a little stagnant i decided to get a 3rd. I used the large propeller because the small one causes a racket. Right now I only have 2 MJ's running because the 3rd one basically made the entire sandbed come flying up. It doesn't matter where you point the heads, the whole tank will circulate in no time.

Posted on 1/7/2009 from AURORA, CO UNITED STATES
Comments: I have been using this for months and it is awesome in my 55gallon reef but I had to trim it when I first set it up because the impeller hit the housing. I am using the smaller impeller. I had to spend a little extra time aiming it so it didn't blow my sand around or lay some of my soft corals down. Things are great now and I can tell my flow is good. This is on one end of my 55G and I have 2 koralia 2 power heads on the opposite end of the tank and they cannot touch what this thing does.

Noisy W/ Wavemaker by K.B.
Experience Level: Expert
Posted on 10/21/2008 from CASTAIC, CA UNITED STATES
Comments: I bought 2 of these to use with my A.S. wavemaker and my Maxi-Jet 900's. VERY noisy when they start up. They really chatter, click, etc. So I bought a Red Sea WaveMaster Pro, hoping that would solve the problem, with it's soft start feature. Nope! Same problem. I would only recommend these for aquariums that need constant flow, not for use with wavemakers.

Posted on 10/20/2008 from SPOKANE, WA UNITED STATES
Comments: After looking around to find a way to remove a bunch of small power heads in my 25 gallon SPS tank I decided to get one of these. The pump used is the Maxi Jet 900 and I opted for the magnets to secure the pump. I would definitely not recommend the use of a clip or suction cups to secure the power head. This mod creates a lot of flow which pushes on the pump. Although I just installed it yesterday it seems to be working great. Prior to turning it on I removed the magnet from the shaft and put a light film of silicon on the shaft and magnet. This prevents potential calcium build up etc. So far the pump is very quiet and I am planning to purchase another one in a couple weeks and use a wave controller to alternate between the 2. Although I have not used the Dumas blade it sounds (from previous posts) that the blade really needs to be balanced before you use it. As a guy who loves Radio Control, I would suggest heading to the local hobby store and pick up a prop balancer. They should only be a couple dollars and should eliminate vibrations, noise, and maybe the broken ball mounts....

Comments: If you want some serious water flow without spending a fortune you need this product, combined with a maxi-jet you get great flow and a great power head, You should get the magnet mount also, the maxi-jet suction cups are not reliable in the first place, add this much flow and weight pressure to them and they wont hold very long. you can make your own magnet mounts for about half the cost of the sure flow mounts with the ViaAqua xl cleaner magnet.

Comments: I bought this for my maxijet 1200. It does make a powerfull flow but it has killed three fish when they swim too close to the pump. They all were tangs so I had to remove it from my tank. The fish get sucked in and can't break free

Comments: I bought two and installed the high flow impellars to two MJ1200s. They are attached to my tank with the Sure Grip 50s. I use the Wavemaster Pro to control them. It has been over a month and they seem to be working even better after the break in period. Great product.

Frustrating by GEORGE

Posted on 7/19/2008 from OK UNITED STATES
Comments: I bought (4) Sure Flow kits to modify my MJ1200s. It seemed like a great concept. However, even after two defective white 2100 gph impellers were replaced by Algae Free, the mods still chattered and shook violently when the pump is turned on. (No, I do not use it on a wave machine.) Apparently all that vibration has now revealed another issue with the Sure Flow 1600. I have had two of them break at the "ball", causing the powerhead to dangle from the powercord. The first fell off when the pump wasn't running,so no harm done. Last night, a second one broke with the pump running, creating a sandstorm and rockslide in my 180G SPS reef tank. A horrible mess. I'm pulling them all out of all my tanks.

Was i way off or what? these things are freakishly amazing. i have a 130gl display & had 4 mj 1200 on the back wall. i bought two upgrades thinking if they helped i would buy 2 more. well if i ever get another aquarium to put the other 2 in i will buy some more. i took 2 of the mj's out. 2 modified with large prop is almost too much. Good Flow - Poor Quality by JOHN O.
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 4/6/2008 from ORO VALLEY, AZ UNITED STATES
Comments: I have 3 in my main tank and they were running fine until 3 to 4 months of operation. On the first kit, one of the plastic arms broke and the powerhead fell to the bottom of the tank. On the other 2 kits, the end of the impeller shaft broke off. To my surprise, the shafts are not 100% stainless steel. There was clear evidence of rust. This could easily be 5 stars if the kits were of better quality.

Comments: This product was a nice upgrade. It has certainly made a difference in my 55. My flow is much better and the tank looks a lot cleaner. I used to have to clean my glass every other day now it seems like I do it once a week. The hardest thing with this product is finding a good spot where it's not blowing sand. The installation was very simple. If you have the sure flow magnets then it is really easy. The only complaint I would have is that it's a little loud but not too bad at all.

Comments: Purchased 2 of these for use with MaxiJet 1200.One ran flawlessly, the other rattled and would ocassionally run in reverse.I even tried 3 different powerheads I had as spares and same result: a buzzing noisy rattle. Other than that they did push a LOT of water. The bigger impeller proved too much for my 150G show tank.Perhaps with a better magnet and better balanced impellers,Algae Free would have a sure hit.If you don't mind noise, get them. If you like your tank quiet, stick to just powerheads.

Comments: Ran three of these for 90 days. All were poorly balanced and often ran in reverse. It looks like the Maxi-jet wasn't made to handle this type of thrust. Two units pushed the back cover off the powerheads resulting in a small mess trying to find all the pieces as well as very limited flow in the tank.

Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 2/19/2008 from OCEANSIDE, CA UNITED STATES
Comments: I used this with a mj400 in my 40 gallon tank. The current produced was so strong it knocked my soft corals over and caused my fish to hide in the corner of the tank. They could barely swim against the flow from this thing. So for larger tanks defiantely the best flow I have ever seen from a power head by far, but way to much for a small tank unless you like the hole cyclone thing.

THE ONLY BAD SIDE IT THAT THERE IS A LITTLE "CRACK" WHEN THE PUMPS FIRST START UP DUE TO THE PROP HITTING THE TAB THAT HANGS OUT ON THE INSIDE OF THE CAGE. A LITTLE TRIMMING OF THE TAB SHOULD FIX THE PROBLEM, OTHERWISE THE PROBLEM WOULD PROBABLY FIX ITSELF ONCE THE PROP BLADE WEARS ITSELF DOWN A BIT.

INSANE FLOW!!! by BOB K
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 2/5/2008 from STANHOPE, NJ UNITED STATES
Comments: I have a 90g and was running 2 MJ-900's and an MJ-600 on a wave controller to give a nice controlled flow. I took it all out and just used the MJ-600 body with the small impeller in this kit and mounted it on the right side of my tank facing left. The current was so strong it was blowing my anemone out of place that is on the other side of the tank! I relocated this to the left side and the anemone is still swaying a little just from the undertoe! That's a total of 8 feet worth of flow counting both directions! I can't immagine using an MJ-1200 body with the large impeller (which is included in the kit)! The flow is now dispersed, creating a current, unlike before which was jet-streams from stand-alone powerheads. If you're looking for seriously insane flow very cheap, this is the kit to buy! There is a slight rattle when first starting up (similar to the Koralia's) so you will want to just turn it on and leave it on (which is then silent). You can't use this setup with a wave maker but it sure beats spending Hundreds of $$$$ on the other brands just to have that ability!

Comments: The flow on this is awesome.Your 290Gph Maxijet, suddenly gets this "BOOST OF ENERGY". The larger flow propeller(White one that comes with it); for a Maxi Jet 1200(2100GPH) is just too powerful for my 115Gal, would be nice on a 180Gal or larger tank. Anyhow, I would recommend to get magnets(stick em on a magfloat or sure grip magnet) as the suction cups keep falling due to starting and stopping from the wavemaker. But the flow is definately awesome, Big power, small package.

SureFlow vs Ecosystem ECOMOD by RON MOEBUIS

Comments: I ordered both the SureFlow and ECOMOD to compare the two. Sureflow won hands down. They are made better IMO and having a choice of two props for flow control is a huge plus. With the high flow these put out, I definately recommend getting a magnetic bracket to go along with these.

maxi-jet upgrade kit by tk480

Posted on 1/14/2008 from EDMONDS, WA UNITED STATES
Comments: I installed the larger propellers in the unit since I am running 2 maxi-jet 1200's. Way too much water flow. I have a 60 gallon reef tank. I replaced those with the smaller propellers and that seemed to do the trick. Considerably more output than the standard maxi-jet powerhead.A little noisey, however with a little tweeking you should be alright.

Comments: I purchased this a few months ago, the flow is great , when i found out there was an upgraded model i had to buy another one. this is by far the best bang for your buck out there, very quiet , built durable, i tried doing the maximod myself a year ago and it came out horrible, with this it took 5 minutes to put together and the flow in my 58g is insane and that is with the 1600gph flow props.

Big Flow, Fragile Arm by rroselavy
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 1/3/2008 from Los Angeles, CA
Comments: I bought one of these for my nano. I refuse to use suction cups for Powerheads, and this mod offers no other option than to buy the expensive $25 magnet. Buying the $15 mod plus the $25 magnet is almost as much as a (1200 gph) Koralia 4. The mod produces a LOT of flow, but initial startup may be alarming with the device clacking as the propeller hits the stop flange inside the grill. The instructions suggest lifting the pump toward the surface (?) until the clacking stops, which didn't work for me - but eventually the propeller started turning the right way after a few restarts and the clacking stopped. Most disappointing was what happened shortly afterward. I was trying to adjust the swivel arm to point the powerhead slightly more downward. I did not realize I reached the limit, and I applied what I consider a light amount of vertical pressure - and the mounting arm snapped quite easily. I stood for a few seconds in disbelief that the arm was so fragile - but afterall - it is just a thin plastic arm. Now I have to rig a custom mount of some sort... :-(
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I purchased 2 of these kits before the latest upgrade that includes the Dumas propeller. It took a good 2 weeks for them to break in and stop making noise. They run great now. I'm glad that Algae Free is offering the new upgrade kit free of charge to those of us that purchased the older kit. I'm just waiting for them to send me out the new upgrade kit.

Comments: This Sure Flow 1600 is GREAT! I bought 2 of them.. After installing the two sure flow 1600's I removed 2 power heads from my tank, that also saved me 30 watts :) Even if you don't have a Maxi-Jet it worth buying the Sure Flow and a maxi over some of the newer power heads. Maxi-Jet has been known as a workhorse for years and the Sure Flow makes it even better. one other thing, if you have an old Maxi missing part save your money and get the sure flow all you need is a Body from a 400, 600, 900, 1200. add the sure flow to it and you'll be up and running in no time :)

Comments: I used to have 4 maxi jet powerheads in my aquarium for flow. I am now using one with the algae free sure flow and have experienced better flow. The noise is not an issue, it was quiet at the start and is still running quiet. I did not have to purchase the magnet to attach nor did I need to use the suction cups. I was able to use the hang on back technique and have the powerhead in a corner.

Improved Flow / No Timers??? by DAVID SHEPHERD

Comments: Nice improvement on the maxi-jet. My corals love the increased water movement, I only have a couple of complaints. They make a good deal of noise intermittently and will some times run backwards. Apparently, although I see no mention of it, they are not meant to be run on timers once the upgrade has been installed. This is what I was told when I called customer service after installing them. If I knew this I probably wouldn't have gotten them. If you run them continuously they seem to do fine.

Comments: i have tried to achieve the perfect flow for my 75g bowfront tank for a year now. i used close loop systems, powerheads, you name it. they were all too noisy and left dead spots. this mod is the best so far with huge flow for my acros. i am using only one of these accompanied by the return flow (500gph) from my sump. make your tank happy and get one, they are not any noiser than the alternatives and put out wide-spread flow. oh and make sure you get the magnet to hold this sucker. good luck!

I have 3 of them running on maxijet 1200s and at one of them is very loud, and i have not been able to fix it. It rattles and hums and changes pitch, not so relaxing. combo them with the suregrip magnets for a budget tunze.

Comments: Excellent upgrade for very little. Way better than that DIY kit stuff. I have 3 1200's in a 125 long tank on a wave maker. I just run 2, and the flow is terrific. I use the third to stir things up now and then. A little annoying sometimes with the clicking on start up. Get the magnetic holders or make your own, you don't want these falling in your tank. Overall, get them, can't beat the excellent water flow for the price, there only 20.00 each not 350.00 like the other guys.

Comments: This product is not bad - for the price. It is easy to upgrade and works great with the Algae Free Sure Grip. It definitely provides great flow that is not so direct. My fish love swimming in the flow. The only draw back is that it tends to vibrate at times and makes a somewhat loud noise. The directions state that this may happen, but does not give any way to fix it. I recommend it for the price, but if you are willing to spend $400 get the Ecotech Marine Vortech - bought it afterwards and it is well worth the $.

Comments: Previous comments about use of glue or zip-ties only applies if you are using Maxi-jet mounts. When combined with Sure Grip Magnets, this really is plug and play. The flow is substantial! I can easily see my coral polyps moving around now. Ideal for simulating currents on reef where they get a tidal surge for 6hrs then flow reverses. Set on opposite ends the tank and plug into a day/night timer so they are on at opposite times. One of the two I bought, needs help starting when it goes in the wrong direction. It should just kick over the correct way but doesn't. Still trying to figure out why"?". This is a pain and what keeps this from being a 5 star product.

Comments: I bought 2 upgrade kits and the magnet holder for my 90 Gallon reef setup. There may be too much water movement. Right now I'm only running 1 pump at a time. I never thought a Maxi-Jet 1200(even modified) could move so much water. The only downfall is this mod does make some extra noise. Since I've only had them for a week, I can't say if they're reliable or if the noise will go away. If your looking for some extra flow cheap, you will like this product.

Comments: I bought two for a client's 40 gallon using MJ power-heads one was plenty, it produces very strong currents I would rate them 5 stars for this but some issues; the edging that attach to the power-head is kind of big and it needs to be inserted and twisted very carefully otherwise it will break the holding clasps in the pump, I was lucky I had an spare, also we were unable to make it work with a controller (wave-maker) even after it had been working for almost a week.

Comments: a very easy up-grade for some super flow. The only down side is that you will need to either buy the magnet to mount it on to the powerhead or you can permenantly attach the mount to the powerhead and then you are stuck using this power head for this purpose only. But other than this it is a good product, especially if you have a spare MJ just laying around and could use some extra water movement.
