With all of the complex equipment available for our aquariums, there is one device that does not require much explanation: the aquarium thermometer.
Aquarium thermometers perform the important job of measuring the water temperature inside your tank. If the water is too hot or cold, the results on fish and delicate animals like corals or invertebrate can be catastrophic. It is therefore important to regulate the water temperature using a combination of aquarium heaters, fans and/or chillers.
Keeping your tank temperature stable and within ideal ranges for the livestock you keep are of utmost importance. Fortunately, there are a wide variety of accurate and affordable water thermometers available. The least expensive and most recognizable type of fish tank thermometers are simple glass models. We have a few versions: one sticks to your tank wall with a suction cup, another floats and the third hangs on the rim of your tank.
The most popular and widely used style is a digital aquarium thermometer. They are very easy-to-read and are generally batter-operated, although some models from American Marine can be plugged into an outlet using a sold separately AC Adaptor. We also carry inexpensive liquid crystal thermometers that mount on the outside of your aquarium glass. Many hobbyists use more than one thermometer just to be safe since temperature is such a critical parameter to control.
