The revolutionary AquaC protein skimmers do not use venturis, downdraft tubes, or air pumps; they employ the patented "Spray Injection System." This innovation allows the protein skimmer to efficiently draw in much more air than any other of the top protein skimmers. This coupled with the superiorly designed compact reaction chamber yields results that will literally blow the waste out of your water.

How does Spray Injection Work?

In 1998, Jason Kim (owner and founder of AquaC) developed a patented process of protein skimming which has come to be known as Spray Injection. Unlike previous forms of skimming, our spray injection method enables huge amounts of air and water to be processed with a relatively small pump. Although it is a simple process, there is still some confusion as to how the spray injector works.

Imagine that you're washing your car – you've got a bucket full of soapy water and a garden hose with a fast-moving stream of water. By placing your thumb over the end of the hose, you can disrupt the stream into a turbulent, high –pressure spray. Now direct that spray down into the bucket of water, and you'll generate a massive amount of bubbles and air flow. That is exactly how our spray injector works.

The skimmer body acts as a water reservoir – the bucket in the example above. Water is pumped through the spray injector, which has a special nozzle that fans the water out into a pressurized spray. This spray shoots into the skimmer body, generating millions of tiny air bubbles. As the bubbles are formed, more air is sucked into the skimmer as a result of the local drop in pressure and the process continues.

Most other forms of protein skimming rely on special valves or media to generate the air flow, and these parts quickly become clogged with salt, dust, or even mineral deposits. The AquaC spray injector is a relatively large nozzle that resists clogging, and when combined with a pump prefilter, can be considered maintenance free.

The Urchin Pro is the sump version of the Remora Pro. These two skimmers share the same internal structure and are identical in terms of performance.

  • The Urchin Pro is built from translucent gray acrylic to inhibit the growth of algae and marine organisms.
  • The skimmer can be ordered with a collection drain fitting (optional).
  • The pump is attached to the skimmer via a section of flexible hose. The pump can be moved into any position you choose.
  • The collection cup is removed from the skimmer by pulling it up and out of the body. Please check that you have the required 26-1/2" of vertical clearance under you stand if you are considering the Urchin Pro.
  • Tank Size (Gallons): 50-120
  • Dimensions: 22" tall x 7-1/2" wide x 3-1/4" deep
  • 8-1/4" x 7-1/2" footprint (pump included)
  • Minimum vertical clearance is 26-1/2"
  • Water level exit height is 15"
  • Includes nylon cleaning brush

good skimmer

i have found it works best with the mag 3 pump. just make sure you put a ball valve in there. then you can dial it in perfect. if you don't it will wet skim like crazy, but when dialed in you can get some real stink.

Great Product, Easy Setup

I've only owned one other protien skimmer so I don't have much to compare to, but from what little I can tell this thing is great! Super easy setup and easily adjustable. The fact that the water level in your sump doesn't effect the performance is great as well. My only complaint is that' it's a little louder than my other skimmer was, but given how much better it works I think it's a fair trade.

Outstanding Skimmer

It replaced a Red Sea Prism which required frequent adjustments and attention. The Urchin is super quiet and makes lots of foam. I like the in-sump placement as it avoids flooding if the collection cup overflows. I am still in the break in period where I am getting wet skimmate, but I hope to eventually get to the dry kind. I frankly don't think one needs the drain fitting option for this product. Things can get tight in the sump - I am adjusting the pump placement trying to avoid pump intake from the outflow of the skimmer.

Works Like a Charm

I'm setting up a new reef tank, my first, and after reading the reviews I purchased this unit. Simple enough to install in my sump. Because of my sump configuration I did have to put on a different intake tube, but that is a minor item. Turned the unit on and it is making foam, although I don't have a large bio load at this point. It is tall, make sure you have the room!!

Fine so far

Just upgraded from a SeaClone100. Happy so far. Only downside: The air injection noise is a bit louder than I prefer.

Super Skimmer

I have used other skimmers in the past: Bak Pak, Cyclone, Visi jet, etc. But none compare. This skimmer is so easy a child could set it up. It is also very powerful. One of the best parts is that it is no louder than a venturi skimmer. I love this new skimmer for efficiency as well. In fact the amount of skim this skimmer removes is actually disturbing. Especially considering what your last skimmer was not removing! Do a little test. After the skimmer breaks in put it into a small aquarium with a few days worth of skim from your old aquarium. See how long it takes to remove it! Then once it is setup in your sump be prepared to be amazed as it may remove skim from your display just as fast. For the price and ease of use you will not beat the performance of the Urchin Pro. It is leaps and bounds ahead of any skimmer I have used previously.

Aqua C Urchin Pro w/ Mag 3

This is the second skimmer I have owned from Aqua C. I had a 29 gallon reef in the past with a Remora HOB and the Maxi-Jet 1200 pump. This time around my tank is much larger, 70 gallons with a 30 gallon fuge. I decided to replace my Tunze 9010 b/c the Tunze's pump just wasn't doing the job. Very satisfied with the Urchin. I'm glad I went with the larger pro model and the Mag Drive 3 pump to over-drive the skimmer. The Urchin has been up and running on the tank for a week now and has been skimming well. I was having problems with cyanobacteria, but that has gone since this skimmer has been running. My skimmer skims very wet, but that has been my experience with any skimmer I put in my sump (this is my third). The skimmer is in 13 inches of water in my sump. This is another advantage of the Urchin Pro. Most skimmers will only run correctly in 3" to 8" of water depth. Two thumbs up for Aqua C!

excellent skimmer

if you have a small sump for your reef tank, then this is the skimmer for you. I had a tunze nano skimmer on a smaller tank that would be able to pull out some very dark skimmate. this skimmer takes a bit of toying around with the cup height in order to get the highly concentrated skimmate that I like. It took me about 2 weeks to narrow down the precise height of the skimmer cup. but now I'm finally getting the skimmate I like. great product.

Great little skimmer

This is a great little skimmer. I added it to my 65 gallon aquarium with a 20 gallon sump. Started it up and it started to make some foam right away. It still needs time to really get some good skimate, but its a great little skimmer. It is a very simple design that works great. I can not believe how quiet it is. I placed it in my sump using the proveded suction cups and they help to stop any noise from vibration. Great little skimmer that gives good foam and makes very little noise. Very easy to set up and get running. The only issue is that it is VERY tall. Make sure you have enough room in your cabinet.
