I let this item soak in saltwater per instructions and it's stays at the highest mark on the chart. Water right out of the faucet will not even zero it out. Neat design but accuracy is way off. I would not recommend this product. I had to give it one star in order to submit this, it doesn't deserve it.

I have used cheap hydrometers in the past but this is by far the WORST I have come across. I just purchased a Refractometer.

I bought this hydrometer because I have used other Coralife products, and have been very happy. This product, however, is not living up to its claim. If you hold the unit by the little tab at the top, it floats and only collects water skimmed from the surface (it claims to collect from 6 in below surface).I have to tap on it to get a reading. In fact, I find myself checking and rechecking. I'm going back to my old hydrometer. I don't trust this product.

The deep six hydrometer works great. Just make sure you know how to use it properly. Tap all of the bubbles out and fill it clear to the top.
A difference in salinity of .010 isn't going to kill even the most finicky of marine life. Not even close. Give your animals more credit.

This product is very easy to use, but it gives incorrect readings. Do not trust it.I always rinsed it in freshwater after use. I usually had to take several readings and tap to release air bubbles in order to get a consistent reading. But ultimately I was having to add too much salt mix to my replacement water so I figured the hydrometer might be wrong. I bought the refractometer, calibrated it, and found that my tank was actually running at 1.030. It wasn't a total disaster, but it is definitely not what I wanted. Skip the cheap hydrometers and get something you can trust.

Dont waste your money on this product. Spend an extra 30 dollors and buy the marine depopt refractometer. They are like 40-50 bucks. These are really never calibrted to begin with, and are almost always extemely wrong with there readings. Dont waste your time or money.

They "may" be good for you at first... IF they are. Othewise over time they will 100% for sure fail you. Salinity in a reef tank has to be controlled pretty tight. My swimgarm told me I had 1.025.. it was 1.029 via Refractometer. I HIGHLY suggest a refractometer... they are cheap... just a tiny bit more than a swingarm.

Purchased this hydrometer in hopes of keeping my hands dry and replacing my Instant Ocean hydrometer. While it does keep your hands dry it was completely uncalibrated. My Deep Six measured the SG at 1.024 when a calibrated refractometer at the LFS read the SG at 1.031! Completely inaccurate, would never purchase again.

I had a similar experience as others, in that the reading was off by 0.004! (yes, enough to do damage). I took it to the pet store and when using a sample of water which was confirmed at 1.022 with a fancy refractometer, the reading was 1.018 on the deep six! So the salesperson agreed to ship it back to Coralife and opened a new one for me. Guess what that one read 1.019! Don't waste your money. The Instant Ocean (Marine Depot Item # AS2141) is much better once you learn how to get the water in it without bubbles (which admittedly is tricky with that model).
