Ecotech Marine VorTech Propeller MP40 Pump w/ Wireless EcoSMART Driver
Features a new magnet, high performance plastic drive shaft screw, a revised wet frame cover and is fully backwards compatible with all VorTech pumps. The new magnet is fully encapsulated within black plastic, cannot be scratched or damaged under normal use, is more durable, eliminates rusting and requires no regularly scheduled replacements.
Features for the MP40 include:
- Long Pulse Mode allows for wave pulse timings of between 2 and 60 seconds, enabling you to create slow alternating flow throughout your tank. And, you can couple multiple masters and slaves to create spiraling or gyre flow too!
- A new Night Mode – one of the most sought after enhancements - enables you to set your pump to operate for 14 hours in whichever mode you select for the day and go back to Night Mode for 10 hours. Master pumps will tell their slaves to go into Night Mode as well. Your Night Mode setting will be stored for as long as you want or until you cycle power to the pump, at which point you simply program the Night Mode again.
- A Pump Disconnect feature automatically shuts down your pump if the dry and wet sides become separated.
Enhancements to existing modes include:
- Feed Mode has been slowed from 1000gph to 500gph to make it easier than ever for you to spot feed corals and slow moving fish in your tank with the push of a button.
- A modified range of adjustment for Short Pulse Mode makes it easier for you to fine tune wave form.
- A novel save function for Pulse Mode enables you to save your own fine-tuned wave, providing you an even higher level of customization, and preventing you from ever having to re-program a wave again.
- A more sporadic Reef crest Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems enables more pronounced speed changes constantly throughout the day
- A more sporadic Lagoon Mode for both single pump systems and multi pump systems provides your tank with enhanced variability to better simulate a lagoon environment
EcoTech Marine has created a new benchmark for wave-like flow by taking a direct route to what we all desire as reef aquarium hobbyists; we wanted high flow, low heat, easy, efficient and controllable technology. Now we have it.
Bracketless Design
The VorTech minimizes the intrusion of equipment in your tank by using a patent pending bracketless design; this allows the motor to be on the outside of the aquarium and uses a magnetic field to transfer torque through the aquarium wall to the propeller located in the water.
No Heat Transfer - No Heat added to the water
Due to the use of high intensity metal halide lighting, inefficient return pumps, and powerheads, many aquarists must resort to expensive equipment or loud fans to keep their water temperature stable. The VorTech induces very little heat into the aquarium because of EcoTech Marine`s patent pending magnetically coupled design which transfers motion through the glass, but not heat.
Controllable
The VorTech uses the most advanced motor technology available, allowing the water flow rate to be completely controllable. Operating on tanks between 20 and 500 gallons and producing between 100 and 3,000 gallons per hour of flow, the VorTech is the most versatile flow product on the market. The VorTech is designed to operate on gap thickness from 1/8" to 3/4".
No AC Current - No AC electricity in the aquarium water
The VorTech is safer than existing products because there is no dangerous AC electricity brought into the aquarium. This keeps your fish and corals happy and healthy, while minimizing your own risk of electrocution.
Run-Safe Design
The VorTech is designed to be the safest and most reliable product on the market:
- Over-current protection - if the propeller becomes jammed, our micro controller will sense the problem and shut the motor down to prevent overheating.
Energy Savings
The VorTech moves more water within your aquarium than conventional powerheads, plus you save money by not having to invest in and run a costly chiller.
Low Maintenance
The VorTech is virtually maintenance free. Classic powerheads use an impeller attached to a magnet assembly which needs to be cleaned every few months. The VorTech need only be serviced minimally to replace a simple and economical bearing.
Battery Backup Accessory
An IceCap, Inc. battery backup powers the EcoTech Marine VorTech Propeller Pump for up to 24-hours during a power outage emergency.
Feed Mode
With the touch of a button, the VorTech enters into feed mode and all pumps shut down for 10 minutes to allow you to feed your aquarium.
Battery Backup Mode
The Wireless Wave Driver can also be used with the battery backup accessory.

A description of the modes can be found here:
EcoSmart Tidal Swell Mode

In this EcoSMART mode water is circulated to create a harmonic balance in your aquarium reminiscent of the changing flow conditions that would be found in nature. Over the course of several hours, the flow pattern will go from very chaotic with an emphasis on left to right flow direction to an emphasis on right to left flow direction, all the while experiencing calm period in between and followed by a great surge of flow at the very end of the cycle. Adjusting the dial changes the maximum speed achieved at any time during this mode. Slave pumps should be positioned opposite the master and on the back of the tank to take full advantage of the EcoSMART modes.
EcoSmart Nutrient Transport Mode

In this EcoSMART mode, water is circulated in a two phase program consisting of wave motion to stir up detritus and surging motion to move the detritus into your overflow where it can be skimmed out. This effect promotes maximum health and nutrient export, as well as increased growth for sensitive corals such as SPS. Adjusting the dial changes the maximum speed achieved at any time during this mode. Slave pumps should be positioned opposite the master and on the back of the tank to take full advantage of the EcoSMART modes.
Classic Reef-Crest and Lagoonal Random Modes

In random mode you can toggle between two different modes, Reef-Crest and Lagoonal. When a pump is in Lagoonal Random Mode, the dial is used to set the maximum operational speed, and the driver will automatically randomize the pumps output to simulate either a high (Reef-Crest) or low (Lagoonal) energy reef environment. If this pump is a master, the associated slave pumps will replicate the master in sync or anti-sync modes.

Manufacturer Info
EcoTech Marine has revolutionized the way people think about water movement in reef aquariums. Our technologically superior pumps produce unmatched broad yet gentle flow, while placing the motor outside the tank—preserving the beauty of your aquarium and enhancing the health of your aquarium ecosystem. The EcoTech leadership team consists of aquarium enthusiasts and engineers with a penchant for challenging the status quo. When EcoTech took root in the science labs of Lehigh University and University of Oklahoma, we realized there were serious differences between the native aquatic ecosystems in nature and the terrestrial habitats created in aquariums—and that little was being done to address this gap in the marketplace. Since that day, we have worked tirelessly to improve the “state of the art” to enable our customers to have the healthiest, safest and smartest aquarium possible. That’s why our products offer a wide variety of easy-to-program modes and have been thoroughly tested and endorsed by marine-biologists—making it the most versatile and life-like pump on the market.

Pump is very quiet after fine tuning. Tip, run full speed and then slow it down, it will start showing small noise at very slow speeds which you can fix by moving slightly. Been trying to program the "long pulse mode" for an hour. The mix of LED's and lighted control wheel stinks as a way to know where you are in the modes. The pump itself is amazing in the amount of detritus it pulls off the bottom. I'd been using Hydor Korallia pumps that were pretty good, but there was no undertow near the bottom. This MP40 gets stuff off the bottom like no one's business. I'm sure once I finally get this thing set up I'll be happier, but the buttons on the controller are not great, hard to tell when you've actually moved to the next level or just thought you did.

Awesome pump. I've had many pumps but NOTHING like this.I have a 150 gallon reef tank, and could not believe the difference of the water quality in one day. The different settings of how you can set the water motion is such a convenience, and it is just like the ocean. It is quiet and easy to use, and well worth the cost.

I just wish it were cheaper. Still it's totally awesome and I replaced 5 regular circulating pumps with this ONE. Love it. Will be buying a second in the future.

Simply the best! Easy to install, simple controls & setup, amazing water movement. A must have for any reef tank ( SPS, LPS or Mixed Reef); your fish and corals will love & respond to the "natural" currents simulated by this powerhead.

In 35 years of reef keeping there have been many products produced to enhance the care of our reefs. This pump is one of the best products I have purchased.
Pro's: Compact relative to flow volume (especially wet side component, highly controllable and variable flow, low power consumption, durable, relatively quiet (mine is in a cabinet). Once running, requires little maintenance.
Con's: Expensive, takes time to learn the programming and connectivity aspects.

I placed one of these in my 90gal tank and took out 5 pumps at the top in the back. The MP40 does not have as much water flow.
It connects to the Neptune Apex system with difficulty.
Still working a a good program for it.
Fish and coral don't like it all that well.

I love love this product. I only gave it 4.5 stars as I
felt the directions were a little difficult but luckily,
the website has alot of great videos on how to properlyset up the VorTech. It is a little louder then I'm used to but hopefully that will die down in time. It really
gets the water moving and takes up such a small blueprint of space. The filter socks are easy to take on and off to clean.

By far the best pump in the hobby. I've had a Gen 1 for over 6 years. All I've done to it is replace the wet side 1 time, and recently upgraded the driver to Gen 2 so I could sync it to my new Gen 2 pump. I have them set to NTM with anti-sync and so far my corals are very responsive to the new flow patterns. I expect these pumps to last a very long time

This product is amazing and definitely worth the price. I had 8 powerheads in my tank, creating as an inconsistent current as possible until I purchase the MP40. Just one MP40 and I was able to get rid of all the powerheads I had in my tank. I will definitely be getting another one as I have a 90 gallon reef and I definitely want to see the wave feature in action.
