I have used this product for years with outstanding results. My corals, sps and fish do fine. I feel it is just as important to keep your display tank free of detritus and follow the ecosystem instructions. I would not pair this system with a deep sanded because the bacteria would be competing for nutrients and the caulerpa may not grow. I keep my display aquarium pristine with cleaning and weekly water changes.
The product is expensive. Leng Sy is a thoughtful innovator and he has been helpful in communicating with me by e-mail. His ongoing research is most interesting.
I currently do use carbon, Tunze skimmers and UV sterilizers in my reef systems. I have tried without, but I have a large bio load and I have typically gone back to this full support system.
If you want to reduce or eliminate nitrates there are several methods such as reactors, vodka or carbon dosing and bio pellets. However, for me this system has worked reliably and quite well. I recommend this product if you want a simple and low-maintainence reef with good results. Always remember to be patient with any system you choose.

I have been using Miracle Mud in my sump/refugium for the last 6-7 years now and have had great success with my reef tank. I was new to reef keeping as I had always kept fish only tanks. I am using this batch to replace some of the mud as they recommend every 2 years. The corals do well, have lots of growth, and beautiful colors without a ton of maintenance. The fish and inverts are healthy and have tons of color as well. Would recommend this product to anyone considering the mud sump option for their reef tank.

I know it's a little expensive but what in this hobby isn't, and IMO I am a 110% believer in the hype. I had such a great result with this in my CPR HOB fuge for my nano that I ordered 4 more bags a week later to swap out the sand in my main fuge. My corals LOVE it, and the fish are more vibrant and active too.

My first tank was a 46 bf. I built a sump slash refuge out of a ten gallon aquarium. Lfs owner talked me into buying 5 lbs of mm and my refuge was a success. I constantly had to remove chaeto to make room for more growth. When i upgraded to an 80 bf a year ago i built a sump/ refuge out of a 30 long aquarium. The refuge measures 18x12x10 more or less. I needed 20 lbs of the stuff. Seamed a bit pricey so i went with sand. The refuge never took off like my first one. Tried all sorts of things to get it to work. I finally broke down and spent the money and in 2 weeks i have seen more growth of
My macros and my water quality is so much better. If you ask me i say miracle mud is a must if you plan on running a refuge. Money well spent. Add some rotifers and copepods and watch them flourish!

I have a yellow tang and kole tang. For one year I have used this product in my refugium. The claims of 0 nitrates I simply cannot agree with... What I can say is of all the people who complain of illnesses with their tangs I must say my two always look beautiful and healthy. I have no idea if it has anything to do with this stuff but my macroalgae grows excellent within this medium.

This stuff works great. The added nutrients really help in the growth of Calerpa and macro algaes especially when setting up a new tank. I have used Miracle Mud for the last 10 years.... $$$$

This mud is great, I've never had nitrates in my 120g. I use 20 pounds of the mud in my refugium. Replace half of the mud every year.
