Comments:
After having this for almost a year, I would not buy another one. It produces quite a bit of noise not matter how often you try to tweak it. The night mode feature is pretty limited and a royal pain to get it set correctly (timing is everything). I have 4 controllable Tunze streams and they are hassle free compared to this device. The ability to "aim" a stream of water is a huge plus when dealing with large colonies of SPS.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

this product is by far the best powerhead out there. I would have given it 5 stars but the price is really high, and on my 72 gallon reef I thought one would be enough. It wasnt though, so only buy this product if you can afford two and have anything over 55 gallons.

Wet side self destructed after 2 months. ceramic bearing froze every 2 weeks. propeller would stop but motor would continue to drive shaft. Shaft wore through. This product has not been perfected and is way overpriced given my experience and the problems I have read about. If interested in purchasing wait a year or two until they get it right.

Very happy after using for 1 month, read a lot on forums before finally ordered the product. I know this is great product but only concern was noise level, seen different opinions on this, and I have very less tolerant on loudness . But the one I got is VERY QUITE, barely noticeable. I set and use the night mode, it runs 50% constant flow of normal setting. So at night the pump is DEADLY quite. Very satisfied, 5 star!

This has got to be the best product out there for making waves in yoour reef tank. I have a 95 gallon mixed reef and this is the only powerhead I use on it, tons of flow and lots of variation in flow. My corals love it thanks ecotech for making such a great easy to use product!!!

this pump is what every serious reefer needs. cant beat the ease of setup. the flow is 2nd to none. the diff modes available on controler can produce any type of flow you will ever need. quality is top notch, & footprint inside tank is very small for the flow pump produces can`t wait until i can save up for another. will not go back to normal powerheads. pump runs almost silent . cant wait to slave 2 together

Without the bulky look of a wavebox, you will get a nice looking compact "pump" that generates waves. I got a 5ft long 100 gallon tank with half full of rocks and arranged all the way up to the water level. The wave displacement is 0.5" on both sides of the tank. Neddless to say more, this is the best!!! Yes, all corals popped their colors after 15 minutes of the waves in action. Everything is moving and the fishes ride the waves........Just like what the manufacturer advertised. Thanks Marine Depot for carrying this product!!!!!!!!!

I am very happy with my new, Vortech Propeller Pump. In just a short time my corals seem more alive, they have responded to the new pump in way that is hard to believe. My fish, and the other little guys in my tank are quite happy as well. As for the pump it self very quite, very easy to use, also the settings for dfferant types of waves, are very cool to see. I like the feed mode as well, a very good setting for feeding my fish. Not sure what esle to say, but this pump is just one excellent addtion to my Reef tank. Thanks alot guys keep up the good work! Thanks Rick

I just installed a pair of these into my 90 gal reef (it replaced a Wave2K machine I had in earlier). I've got one on the reefcrest mode, and the other as a slave running in anti-sync mode. I'll write more later on reliability, but for now: Pros: Easy to install and set up. Amazing flow! My fish are riding the waves and seem to be having a great time. Compared to the Wave2K, these pumps are virtually silent. Much quieter than the light fans or main pump. I have to put my ear right next to them to even tell if they're running. Virtually silent. They pulled up a LOT of debris thats been sitting in my tank for the last few months - the water circulation is much better than it was. Cons: Minor, nitpicking points - I wish the cords between the pumps and the control boxes were a bit longer (like the Tunzes). When I place pumps on the opposite side of the tank and have the control boxes next to each other it limits your options. Holy vague instructions batman!! They really need to rewrite the manual. I basically had to trial and error the control setup. Fortunately, its pretty intuitive to do so it wasn't hard to figure out.

Wetside pump problems

Comments:
The electric side of the motor is very reliable. However, the wetside pump shaft and ceramic bearings wear out quickly if not installed correctly at Ecotech. I have two of these pumps and one having the wetside assembly go bad. The new wetside pump had a loose bearing due to the teflon washer not making contact with the shaft. It made a lot of noise and then the impeller stopped turning. I found the problem and used the old teflon spacer from the old wetside assemble to fix it. Even though I had these problems, I still would recommend this pump to others if they made parts for the wetside assembly more available.

Still very pleased with the purchase almost a year later. Everything everyone says about the flow is true. Worth the price just not having all that equipment and wires in my tank. This seems to be a very well designed product. Does what it says and in a 75 gallon reef. I put the unit in the middle on the back. Make sure to listen carefully to adjust for quietest peration or you will hear a knocking sound. Enough modes for any enviroment. Great low power for such water flow. makes great sand patterns like the ocean.

I have had no experience with powerheads other than what i inherited with my 75 gal established mixed use tank and it was old as dirt. The Vortech Propeller Pump works well, very small learning curve. Nice features: feeding mode, night mode, and multi modes including auto wireless slave control for larger tanks. Really moves some water as I had to turn it down some. Still makes a bit of noise about the same as the fan on the light. The fish all love it, swimming "upstream" into the flow then turning to surf the "wave" unti' the ubrupt stop 4 feet away. Makes tank watching even more fun. Thanks.

People try to compare this with a tunze wavebox, but they can't be compared. Doesn't make waves like the wavebox, but this powerhead is awesome. If you're looking for waves only, then this powerhead is not for you. I have two of these on a 48" tank and you can make little 1" waves with just one, with two you can notice the wave. I would suggest two on a 48" tank to get flow through the whole tank, but one would be good to start out with. If you have sugar fine sand expect it to be blown around continously with the highest flow settings. You can program your own settings for the short pulse and long pulse settings and recall them. Feed mode is great to allow the fish some time to catch their food and night time mode is an excellent feature as well. Beats having to go through so many powerheads to get the right flow. Flow is wide and undertow is strong. The downside so far is you cannot just shut off the pumps for maintenance, you actually have to disconnect them which is annoying. When you disconnect them you lose the night time that you programmed and have to reprogram it. I would choose these over a large tunze wavebox any day

First Impressions

Posted on 7/19/2008 from SAN FRANCISCO, CA UNITED STATE
Comments:
My first impression of the product is that it was reasonably well thought out, and it's obvious that the designers of the product looked at some of the shortcomings of the competition, Tunze. The first thing that I noticed was the large vents. My tank tends to have a lot of 'stuff' floating around, and I'm constantly faced with having to clean out my Tunze's tight venting. These vents are 2-3 times larger. My expectation is that regular maintenance will be easier with this product. The second thing that I really like about this product is the use of the wireless controller that can talk to other controllers. If you have more than one pump, you can allow the pump to join a group where a master pump coordinates its slave pumps. When in a group, the slaves can either be coordinated or anti-coordinated with the master. The first point is the fact that the owner must be prepared to secure the pump to the aquarium wall using a zip tie and an adhesive attachment beyond the magnet that is used to hold itself in place. I wouldn't place this product on a display pane that might get a lot of foot traffic for fear of a wayward elbow accidentally knocking it off the wall. A non-viewing pane, in my opinion, is best for this. The second point is that properly aligning the two halves can be tedious (but not difficult), and misaligned halves can cause additional wear and tear on the mechanics. Also, since it is mounted flat on the wall, you can't angle the flow. Considering the high bar that Tunze set with the Stream product several years ago, I would say that this product is at least equal in quality. The designers were thoughtful in the way they planned out their controller. Whether you have one or more, you still buy the same product and it's your option whether you want them to work in concert or independently. To me, reliability, ease of use, and ease of maintenance are important purchasing criteria. Only time will tell as to the reliability.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

After seeing the reviews and the demos online I decided to put one of these pumps in my 70g SPS tank. This pump is pricey, but you definitely get what you pay for. The noise is a little more than I expected, however for the amount of flow you are getting you can't be disappointed. I will be purchasing a second pump for my 70g since I have them mounted on the rear and the overflow divides the tank.

I just placed an Ecotech Vortech unit with wireless driver in service today (7/02). This is one piece of technology that is absolutely an answer to an aquarist's prayers! You can place the unit anywhere you need to in order to eliminate dead spots, create a desired waveform effect and pulse generation. You can add units and form groups to work in sync or out of sync. It's top dollar technology, but worth the investment. I am using a single pump and controller, but may purchase a second, just to have the ability to create a pulse and counter pulse. The trechnical documentation fo set up and use is excellent. **Please read the manual before setup** and you will be as happy as a clam!

Well I really like this pump from the start. The way it moves the water stirred up spots that had not been reached by the 2 pumps I replaced with it. I also really like the ability to control things, like tone it down with the touch of a button during feeding (that automatically returns to full power afterwards), or adjust flow as needed via the control box. Now- I was a little disappointed by the construction of the control box, It seems a little flimsy, although the pump itself seems very solidly built.

I have this pump with controller in my 300 Gallon Saltwater. It pumps at pretty good rate and has options to change the current flow rate which is real nice plus has a feeding option that slows the rate dramatically and then picks the rate back up after 10 minutes. For the 300 Gallon Aquarium I think I would need to add another 1-2 pumps so the price is high for the output. Might be a more ideal pump for a 180 Gallon otherwise plan on adding another 1 at least.

Despite the price, this pump is worth it. I was able to replace 4 unsightly circulation pumps in my 150g tank. The tank looks much "cleaner" now. This single unit can REALLY move the water and has a strong undertow. I run it at full tilt 24/7 and have not had any overheating issues, although that is a reported issue. If it weren't for the price I would purchase a second pump for the other side of the tank. The reason they cost so much is because the manufacturer knows this pump provides unparalleled performance in the industy.

Ecotech has put out a really innovative product that will improve marine husbandry. I finally broke down and purchased one of these gems a month ago. It provides fantastic flow and has a small footprint but every time I walk in my living room I can really hear it working. While I love the flow and know that my corals and fish appreciate it, I cannot rate this above average based upon the steep price and noticible sound that it produces.

I put this pump in about a week ago and have been very happy with it so far. The flow it creates is very wide and the wave driver makes for a nice undulation. I put this in a 300 gallon tank expecting it to be powerful enough to create a strong flow on the top with an undertow on the sand bed and rocks, and it's definitely not powerful enough for that. The cost is the big downside with this unit, I would have already bought more of them to supplement if they were more affordably priced. There is sound from the unit at full power, anyone who says otherwise cannot hear it over the other equipment but not distracting. What is most fascinating is the fish really seem to like the wave action and hang out in the half of the tank it occupies more than the other half. Will likely buy another when money allows.

There are just way too many issues with a product at this price. I had to send mine out for warranty work after having it running for 4 days to fix a stalling and noise issue. I got it back from Ecotech and the issues still exist after telling me that it runs perfect. I've never had so many problems with an "out of the box" item in my life. Go online and search the reef message boards for more info on issues with the pump before you decide to make a purchase. Save yourself the headache and buy yourself a Tunze.

Very easy to install and setup. I have the wave driver set for "Reef Crest". The water movement appears almost random. The hard part is positioning corals in the tank based on whether or not they like moderate or low water movement. If our goal is to attempt to reproduce the marine environment in our tanks, this product gives us one less variable to worry about. The downside is that it is hecka expensive!

this pump has some great points but some minor drawbacks first the price is high, second it is not adjustable at angles and hard to get aligned plus a bit loud, that being said it has some great points that eclipse its problem in my opinion first sight lines, much less footprint in the tank. Second the various reef zone adjustments are nice third no heat transfer in the tank also it moves a lot of water both out from the propeller and the undertow of water feeding the prop all and all I removed mt tunze and am now only using the echotech.

No night mode means having to turn it down manually each night. I dont think it could be used on a timer as the front is wide open. Any animal that went in to it while it was off would be chopped up. Still a great product. Creates serious random flow in a wide pattern. Can't wait to get another and anti-sync them.

I just got this and I stopped everything to put it on my 50 gallan tank. It was easy to install. Very easy to line up the inner and outer halves. Works almost silently. Right away I could see the amazing amount of water it can move. It kicked up a lot of detritus that my other pumps were leaving behind. Thats the best part, I just replaced 4 powerheads with this one pump.
