Eheim

A well-kept aquarium radiates crystal-clear cleanliness right down to the gravel bed. However, sinking dirt particles, plant debris and organic residues repeatedly form an ugly layer of sludge. This provides the breeding ground for unwanted substances which pollute the water.

One should therefore thoroughly clean the surface of the gravel at regualr intervals and remove the dirt particles around plant roots, stones and corners. The newly developed EHEIM Sludge Extractor is therefore an ideal helping hand.

In principle this handy tool functions like a conventional vacuum cleaner: The powerful pump sucks the dirty water from the bottom via the suction jet into the integrated filter element. Here the dirt particles are reliably caught and removed from the water.

  • Battery operation
  • Working duration of up to 4 hours
  • Easy handling
  • Powerful suction pump
  • Suction jet with extension element
  • Suitable for marine and freshwater
  • Supplied complete with batteries
  • Fully submersible
  • 2 years guarantee
  • Requires 4 AA batteries to operate
  • 2.5" x 24"
Tip: Works best when you go slow and easy, especially when the batteries are new.

Not so effective

The product arrived with very old suspect batteries. No worries, I did not use the batteries, instead replacing them with new ones. If that was the only problem it would have been okay. However the unit itself has not been very effective. It will run for a while if you hold it still and exactly vertical. As you tilt the vacuum or move it, it will quit working. If you happen to get it to work for while, it will stop as soon as it picks up any significant debris. Color me not happy.

Sucks

As happenstance would have it, my current in the tank piles the detritus in the corner of my tank where it is easy to dip this vacuum in and suck it up. In this manner, I spend two minutes a week on this aspect of tank maintenance. The unit does tend to get clogged up with plant stems, but it gets most of the crap pretty darn well. My tank is 24" deep and this vacuum is truly useful. I recommend it highly.

eheim quick vac works well

This device works as advertised and seems to have all the quality design and construction typical of Eheim products. I was able to start using it almost immediately without reading the manual. Just put it together, 5 pieces if you include the removable container. It is powered by 4 AA batteries, which are supplied. Many claim it is a bit under powered with AAs. 2 C size might be better. The truth is that the system could not handle more flow into the container. Plus it is not made to catch fine dusty colloidal particles. They go right through the container screen. so you would be just clouding your tank temporarily. I had a lot of uneaten food built up in my thick bottom cover. It only took only two containers fill ups to clear the whole tank, including some leaves it sucked up also. I am very glad to replace my old vacuum device with this Eheim. the old one was about ten pieces of cheap plastic and a capture back tied on with a string - nasty!

ONE GREAT CLEANING TOOL

I HAVE HAD TROPICAL FISH SINCE CHILDHOOD,,TOO MANY YEARS TO COUNT. THIS MACHINE IS PERFECT FOR WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR,,A CLEANER TO USE IN BREEDER TANKS,,AND IN-BETWEEN PARTICAL WATER CHANGES. IT'S GREAT FOR PLANTED TANKS AS A GRAVEL WASHER. I FOUND IF YOU EXTEND THE WATER INTAKE RIGHT BELOW THE IMPELLER WITH A PLASIC TUBE,,OR PLASTIC HOSE,AND RUN IT OUT THE END OF THE UNIT,,IT REALLY PICKS UP ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING FAST. IT'S VERY VERSITAL AND EASY TO CLEAN. I HAVE TWO UNITS,,AND CUST SVC AT EHEIM IS GREAT TOO. AND IT IS WATER TIGHT. THIS UNIT IS CALLED SLUDGE EXTRACTOR,,GRAVEL WASHER OR QUICK VAC PRO AUTO GRAVEL CLEANER AND SLUDGE EXTRACTOR. THEY ARE ALL THE SAME UNIT DEPENDING WHERE YOU LIVE. GIVE IT A TRY.

Breaks Easily

When this is working, I truly love it, but it only worked for a handful of uses and had to change the batteries a couple times. If it doesn't break, it is quite great.

It sucks!!!

If you give this a bad review then you are not using it correctly. I got one a few weeks ago when I started getting an algae and slime problem in the substrate in my tank. You need to go slow but this thing works awesome at pulling detritus while leaving the sand and water behind. I had to give 4 stars because the filter material isnt quite fine enough and clouds your tank for a bit but I think if it was finer it would restrict and lower performance.I also think that this is a finesse product that requires practice to use correctly. From some reviews I have read on it it was supposed to come with Duracell batteries but mine came with the typical cheapo no-name Chinese type . I replaced those with Duracells and it works better. Thoughnot as powerful as expected it does its job and sucks all the gunk out of my substrate. I think tank depth lowers performance as well the filter screen needs to be under water to work right if you have at least an 18in deep tank it will work for you
