A well-kept aquarium radiates crystal-clear cleanliness right down to the gravel bed. However, sinking dirt particles, plant debris and organic residues repeatedly form an ugly layer of sludge. This provides the breeding ground for unwanted substances which pollute the water. One should therefore thoroughly clean the surface of the gravel at regualr intervals and remove the dirt particles around plant roots, stones and corners. The newly developed EHEIM Sludge Extractor is therefore an ideal helping hand. In principle this handy tool functions like a conventional vacuum cleaner: The powerful pump sucks the dirty water from the bottom via the suction jet into the integrated filter element. Here the dirt particles are reliably caught and removed from the water. YES, they are my PET fish, and I love them very much!! As you all know, you can ask 10 fish "experts" (I use this term very loosely) for a solution to a problem, and all 10 will give you different answers. One of the various "experts" I spoke to recommended a type of vacuum, and I did my due diligence online, and saw that many people raved about this EHEIM product, so I gave it a shot. It definitely works - is quite easy to put together, is easy to use and sucks the crap out of your tank. Mine is about 45 gallons and I've used the EHEIM Sludge Extractor twice in the week that I've received it, and will probably use it on a weekly basis at this point, after never needing anything like this in the 20 years since I started my tank. I really appreciate the WWW and people who take the time to write reviews - I hope that I help people the way those before me helped me judge this product - it is well worth the investment, even at full price!!
