The Hagen Fluval 305 External Canister Filter provides complete, multi-stage filtration for aquariums up to 300 Liters (70 U.S. gallons). The modular design allows for quick and easy maintenance while flexible filter media chambers permit maximum versatility for basic to custom filter media configurations. The Fluval 305 External Canister Filter incorporates twin foam pre-filters that efficiently trap waste and debris, increase flow and reduce maintenance. Fluval 05 external canister filters offer quick, trouble-free maintenance features. These include instant priming, lift-lock clamps that securely lock the cover in place and an Aqua-Stop feature that stops the water flow without the need to disconnect hoses. The ribbed, opaque hosing bends and turns easily without kinking and makes installation and removal easier while supporting better water flow. An instructional DVD is included to simplify installation of the unit.

I was attracted to the concept of an off tank filtration system that was easy to service and had a small footprint. The item, by design, is a good concept because it resembles a pool filter. Undoubtedly, media components are easy to change. Set up can be bothersome because cutting hoses to length is a bit unsettling. One end of the hoses are situation in the tank, while the other end fits on the canister manifold. However, this is simply a press on filter and I experienced a couple of disasters. Since the filter creates a gravitation syphon effect, the manifold hoses better stay put. They don't! They have a tendency with movement to slide off resulting in an immediate and copious cascade of water out of the tank. Even quick action can result in a spill of a could of quarts to gallons of water in mere seconds. So, if you are planning to hide your canister in a cabinet, prepare for a potential disaster. My unit is in my basement and it is situated in a plastic bucket. I will admit that the unit is very quiet, but still requires some engineering. One, the hose connection to the manifold MUST be locking. I am wondering if the designers thought of this at all. Two, the o-ring between upper and lower half of the unit must be in place for the unit to seat and seal properly; I bought an extra o-ring and coated it with Jack's lubricant . . . same used on swimming pool connections. This canister filter has great potential if the simple design suggestions were implemented.

I was hesitant to buy a canister filter because of the price, but the Fluval 305 is a marvel. Everything about it radiates efficiency and quality. Both the large, full-color instruction booklet and the DVD are beautifully illustrated and easy to understand (nice for someone like me who isn't a techie by nature), the 3-year warranty is comforting, and it works beautifully. I thought my water was crystal clear before, but this thing makes it clearer.

I did A LOT of research/review reading before making a decision on which canister filter to buy (my 1st). I was a little concerned by some reviews that said this product is hard to prime, had troubles with trapped air, and the hoses came off easy. I purchased this one anyway because other products were reportedly leaking after a few months and I didn't want to spend several hundred on an expensive canister filter.
In my opinion, the cautionary reviews that I read were completely wrong. The hoses are tight!!! (as long as you screw the locking nuts down) The unit was easy to prime!!! (as long as you lift the return nozzel above the water line so all the air can freely escape as the canister fills with water... not sure if that one is in the instructions or not... I figured it out pretty quick when the unit stopped filling shortly after I stopped pumping the primer) The pump easily expelled trapped air on its own within the first few minutes of running (as long as you primed it properly first... I learned that the first time I restarted the unit after adding a polishing pad)
I haven't been using the filter long enough to comment on it's filtering capabilities, but so far I'm impressed with the overall quality of the components, and the thing is absolutely silent... other than a little flowing water noise coming from the hoses. More than adequate flow through the tank.
I didn't watch the DVD that came with the product... the written instructions were clear and the overall process was intuitive and easy.

arrived very quick and is very quite while running. i purchased this filter because my other wouldnt stop leaking i do not for see this being a problem with this filter because the top is a little hard to get off but that is fine with me means no leaks. the only real issue is my tank is in the center of a room and you have to use the issued hoses which are black when i had clear hose before. other than that works great

We bought Fluval Canister Filter because we had very bad experience with Eheim Classic External Canister Filter. Fluval comes with very good instructions, DVD, so if you are beginner it will be very easy to undertand how put the filter together. It's very convenient for maintenance, very-very quiet. We have aquatic turtles and had to clean water every another day. Now it's crystal clean! Turtles are happy, so are we! It was make for customer!

The stop valve feature on this filter makes maintenance quick and dry with very minimal water dripage. I've been using it on a 30 gall saltwater tank for the almost a year now and have not noticed any ill effects on protein skimming. The media baskets are big enough for everything I've put in them. My only complaint with this filter is I wish opening the top could have been a little easier. The natural suction that goes on inside the canister makes you have use a little elbow grease to get the top off. There could have been more room to get a good grip on the lid.

I was sold this product by the LFS for my 56 gallon deep reef tank. It does give some moderate filtration and will clear up the water. The downside to this product is the tubeing easily gets clogged. and it is very hard to open the top for cleaning after you have had it for a while. It does produce good flow and is pretty quiet. With that being said I do beleive there are much better choices of cannister filters out there.

We ordered a Hagen Fluval 405 Canister Filter for our 70 gallon fish tank from Marine Depot. The order was placed on their web site and we had our filter delivered within two days. Our filter was installed and is working perfectly. It is of narrow design and fits behind the stand for our tank, completely out of sight. Additionally, this filter operates silently, which is of great benefit. We are very pleased with the service we received from Marine Depot and the product we obtained.
