HANNA‘s HI 96822 Digital Refractometer is a rugged portable, water resistant device that utilizes the measurement of the refractive index to determine the salinity of natural and artificial seawater, ocean water or brackish intermediates. The HI 96822 benefits from HANNA‘s years of experience as a manufacturer of analytical instruments. This digital refractometer eliminates the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers and is rugged and portable enough to be used at home, in the lab and out in the field.

The HI 96822 is an optical device that is quick and easy to use. After a simple user calibration with distilled or deionized water, a seawater sample can be introduced into the sample well.

Within seconds, the refractive index and temperature are measured and converted into one of 3 popular measurement units: Practical Salinity Units (PSU), Salinity in parts per thousand (ppt), or Specific Gravity (S.G. (20/20)). All conversion algorithms are based upon respected scientific publications using the physical properties of seawater (not sodium chloride).

Temperature (in °C or °F) is displayed simultaneously with the measurement on the large dual level display along with icons for Low Power and other helpful message codes.

Comments: I started with a hydrometer and then moved up to a refractometer, but I was still uncertain about whether I was reading the scale correctly since the line between white and blue was somewhat of a gradient. After my first week with this digital refractometer, I am 100% pleased. I tested it against two 35ppt calibration solutions several times over the past week and every time it has been dead on. The readings are so simple it was convenient to use to test my acclimation process for a new fish. I took samples of the fish water until it was the same salinity as the display tank: very easy with very little hassle.

Comments: Good - it gives the same reading every time. Consistent... Bad - it has accuracy of +|-.003. It read 1.021 on my reef aquarium which was really 1.024. I contacted Hanna and they informed me that it is within margin of error. Well .003 matters in a sps tank.

Comments: Best purchase so far. Dont risk your precious animals to a flimsy hydrometer, get the best and never worry about your salinity again. Very easy to use and calibrate!

Comments: Yes, this is worth getting if you have the money to spend on it. I tested the results against 3 other testing procedures and this thing was dead on. Makes reading sg very easy and accurate. Buy this, you wont regret it.

Comments: Wow! If you've got a few extra buck they would be well spent on the 96822. I think back to my early years of using a floating hydrometer, this is "Star Trek" level technology in comparison! Calibrate with a few drops of distilled water and away you go!

Comments: This unit is a great combination of accuracy, precision and ease of use. Calibration is on button push and takes seconds. Reading salinity is just as easy and since the unit give salinity in PSU, PPt or SG there is no need for a reference table. I wish all tests for my reef tank were this quick, simple and straightforward.
