Manufacturer Info

Hanna Instruments USA Aquarium Supplies
Hanna Instruments is a leading manufacturer of analytical aquarium instrumentation. They were founded in 1978 and are headquartered in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. When Hanna introduced pH Electronic Paper in 1986 it literally revolutionized the world of testing by allowing millions of people in various industries to test for pH in a simple, accurate and affordable way. Hanna employees are constantly challenging themselves to improve on existing technology and to invent new testing techniques with the common goal to simplify analytical testing. This applies not only to instrumentation, but also to sensors development, reagents and chemicals. Hanna also believes in controlling the quality of their products from inception to delivery so they manufacture everything themselves, from meters and electrodes to chemical reagents and buffer solutions.

HANNA

This should be reviewing the Alkalinity test kit and not the Chlorine tests. The product is good. The attention to detail regarding product review questionnaire is lacking.

Besten

I only use my Hanna phosphate checker and occasionally the Hanna calcium checker and maintain great levels. I do test phosphates once a day. It usually will give me an indication that something is going on. It's usually something died that was just old, like a small fish, but occasionally I can start overfeeding a little or not water-changing with enough frequency. I'm not sure how I maintained a tank before using a strip! AAA+++

inventory

This item is what it is described as,it comes with a new syringe and is in a convenient box for storage until it's needed. The Hanna checker works nicely. There is also an expiration date on the reagent,I would think the product probably has a considerable shelf life, but,it's there just the same.

Hannah Ca Checkers/Reagents

I have 3 Hannah checkers and it is only this checker/reagent I have to rate poorly. I don't know if it's the checkers or the reagent but it seems many hobbyists are noting that the Ca checker results are in many cases 100 ppm and greater above actual levels. I reacted to a Hannah Ca checker level of greater than 600 ppm in 8 consecutive tests on separate days with many water changes trying to correct. Turned out when I discovered in several reef forums about this going on, I used another test kit and my Ca had gotten down to 300 ppm - checked again with Hannah checker and it read 440. Hannah needs to recall either the checkers or the reagents ASAP.

Required purchase

Can't have a reef tank without Hanna testers. Well , you can but I would not recommend it. This product is always consistent even with cross testing with other products, Hanna checkers are always spot on and half the time.

Needs better packaging

Not user friendly packaging, this single fact makes it harder than it needs to be to use. Hence the lower rating.

Accurate for a chemist

So I purchased this test kit and while waiting for my tank to get set up I decided to test my friends water. he took his water to the fish store and they measured it to be 420 ppm calcium. So I took some of his water and measured it with the syringes in the kit. The reading came out to be 527 ppm? Why the difference? So since I am a chemist I went into the lab and made up a standard of 400 ppm Ca 2+ using CaCl2 and an accurate volumetric flask and a microbalance. I also brought home some old pipettes because you need to measure out 1 mL and 0.1 mL. Based on the kit not sure how accurate the 1 mL needs to be but the 0.1 mL needs to be accurate. If you measure 0.125 that is the difference between 400 ppm and 500 ppm. So I used the accurate pipettes and obtained a value of 409 ppm. That's a 2% accuracy and that's assuming everything was measured perfectly and there was no residual Ca in the glass or RO water. Also 2% accuracy is about the accuracy of the pipettes so I am very satisfied with the reading. I gave this 4 stars because I don't think you can do better than 10-15% accuracy with the supplied syringes but maybe with practice it would get lower to maybe 5%. Overall very easy to perform the test and the digital readout is great!

Hanna Phosphate

Love the meter and the reagent packs are reasonably priced. It would make sense to include more than six tests though. I bought replacement packs and Marine Depot was amazingly fast in sending the new ones.
