Marine Depot Aquarium Pro Refractometer
Information
Specifically designed for aquarium use for measuring the salinity of Natural Sea Water. Almost all hand held salt water refractometers available to the hobby are designed and calibrated for testing of brine solution, i.e. sodium chloride, and are not calibrated for the refractive index of natural sea water (NSW). This is a very important distinction. Other Salinity Refractometers used for marine aquariums are designed to test salt water-nothing else! The Reef Meter is designed to measure Salinity of NSW taking into account the other elements that comprise salinity in the marine water sample.
Even though the largest percentage of salt in the sea is sodium chloride, the presence of other significant ions such as magnesium and calcium in NSW results in a different refractive index to that of brine. A standard (brine) Refractometer will therefore not give the correct salinity for NSW and a conversion factor must be applied.
For example a 35ppt (parts per thousand) solution of NSW has the same refractive index as a 36.5ppt solution of brine. When using a normal brine Refractometer the user should therefore look for a reading of 36.5ppt when trying to achieve a reading of 35ppt for NSW.
Easier to Read
One of the other problems with most Refractometers is the scale displayed normally reads from 0-100ppt when we are really only interested in the region from 30-40ppt The Reef Meter Refractometer has therefore been specifically designed to read from 0 1.020-1.040 which gives you 2.5 times the resolution of a normal 0-100 scale.

This product does everything it should. It comes calibrated out of the box and instructions on how to calibrate it if you need to. Far as I can tell it is very acurate and does a lot better job than my cheapy hydrometer... I would definatly reccomend this product but it may be difficult to use if you don't allready have some experience with refractometers.

The scale on this is not any bigger than the less expensive one. It requires very intense light to see the scale.

Having the scale close to where you need the water to be is very nice and makes it very easy to read. But for setting up water still good to have a Hydrometer to get u in the ballpark because of the closer scale. This is my first saltwater tank, was using a Hydrometer to set up my water and wow it was off.( did not know any better :/)it was at 1.018.I was lucky things where living. Got the water set and wow everything started to grow like crazy! Worth the buy, great little piece, nice case, easy to use. Never go by Hydrometer to set your water, Refractometer is the only way to go!

Solid, quality instrument and hard plastic case at a fair price. Detailed, easy to follow instructions printed in a typeset that does not require a magnifying glass to decipher.Reading the scale is simple and straightforward. This is the refractometer you have been looking for.

I have not bought one of these for almost 10 years. This is a nice upgrade. The smaller salinity range alows the scale to be larger and more readable. The optics adjust easily to accomodate old eyes.
It does what it is supposed to do accurately and reliably.

I recently purchased a 14 Gallon Nano Cube DX and also bought a hydrometer but just didn't trust it. It was reading the salt kind of high. So I bought the Pro Refractometer and some calibration fluid and my water is perfect at 1.026 where the hydrometer was showing it at 1.028. I feel more confident now that I know exactly what my SG really is in the tank now. Would definitely recommend this product to anyone.

I am in the process of setting up my first saltwater aquarium. I was using a Coralife Deep Six Hydrometer to measure specific gravity but had reason to doubt the device's accuracy. I figured it was worth $50 to have an accurate salinity reading after investing a few thousand in the tank and various equipment.I recieved the Refactometer from Customer Service in about 3 days and was impressed imediately with the product quality. It is solid, well made and comes with a small screwdriver for calibration and a plastic dropper for drawing water specimens. The instructions were easy to follow and I had the device calibrated and ready to use in about 5 minutes. The refractometer gives you the salinity in parts per million per liter as well as specific gravity which varies with temperature. I found that the Coralife Hydrometer was significantly off.I am pleased with the MarineDepot Refractometer and Customer service. I am very pleased with this purchase. If you can afford to be involved in this hobby which is relatively expensive then you should purchase this product.

Ordered 5 Aquarium Pro Refractometers for use in a school program. One of the units broke (when teacher was using it, not students)after 1 week of use. Could no longer focus because the plastic collar in the optics broke. Also, the optics require a very bright light source to read the scales clearly. Not the easiest refractometer that I have used.Customer Service is replacing it but I am concerned about the durability of the other units.
