Comments: About the Refractometer: Throw away your hydrometers and buy one of these, if you can afford the electronic one, you would do well to do so, so you don't have to aim into the light or trust your vision as much. My readings have been off for years using the hydrometer, and the critters didn't seem to mind much. My hydrometer (coralvue) read 1.026, but the Refractometer (being correctly calibrated) read 1.021.I would recommend you not follow the calibration directions (if they come in the box as 2 of the 3 did not have directions in the box) offered; and instead pay the extra nine or ten dollars and order the sg/sal calibration fluid MD offers on their site. I say this because the refractometer must be calibrated correctly, and while distilled water (directions recommendation) probably gives a better reading than tap water, you really net scientifically engineered calibration fluid to make this investment pay off.Overall, I am happy with my properly functioning Refractometer. If you get one that is not giving you consistent readings or shows any damage or particulate in the view finder, I would bring it to their attention and they will gladly reconcile the problem(s) promptly. I believe these problems were incidental and your experience will be different than mine. This is a very nice instrument and not a toy. If you're serious about making NSW and keeping up on your salinity w/o breaking the bank this is the right tool at the right price Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Picked one of these up solely based on price. Instructions are clear, pipette works well, included screwdriver to calibrate, adjustable eyepiece, insulated body to reduce thermal influence on test. It took me a few tries to figure out how many drops of water to use, but now I have it down pat. I had to rotate the eyepiece quite a few times to get the scale to be in focus, but it was pretty sharp once I got it right. The only problem I have with this refractometer is the optical quality of the eyepiece. While it rotates and focuses properly, there is a bad "grind" on the glass/plastic. I have to move my eye around in a circle to find a narrow place that isn't blurred optically. It's hard to explain, but it's like a smudge of oil that is physical in the glass. That may be what you pay for in higher dollar units - better optics. It still gets the job done if I hold it up to my under cabinet light and move my eye around a bit. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I love this refractometer! So much more accurate than those cheap plastic salinity dip tests. The refractometer works best if it is recalibrated every four or five tests as it tends to shift off a point or two. Works great and highly recommended! Comments: Pros: Very easy to use and seems to be accurate if you can calibrate it correctly. Cons: Calibrating can be a pain considering it tells you in the instructions that the room temperature has to 68 degrees in order to properly calibrate the unit. Considering it is summer time now this was a very annoying calibration process. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: A very important test now with fine accuracy. Came calibrated, but easy to check. A must have for the serious Reef Tank hobbyist. If you measure salinity by density or the float method, you have bubbles adhering and friction on the pivot resulting in inaccuracy, not to mention the temp. compensation. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: The price is right, and the readout is quite clear. One thing that you'll need to learn is how to keep the water layer from having voids. What works for me is to put a blob of water at the top of the slide so that closing the cover slide pushes the water down over the rest of the lower slide. But it's just great. Comments: This refractometer was a huge step for me in the right direction. I have over eighteen salt and freshwater tanks, and this valuable little invention is a life saver. With just a few drops of water, I am even able to check the salinity of the water that any of my new purchase come home in. It is very easy to callobrate and it stores so securely in the case, which many less expensive refractometers don't come with. I wish that I had never purchased those swing arm, plastic hydrometers. Comments: To be candid, I purchased this refractometer because it was the least expensive one I could find. I had borrowed someone’s to test with and decided it was time to upgrade my testing procedures. It’s hard to imagine needing any more expensive refractometer than this. It is simple to use and accurate. Even comes in a durable case. I’m glad I purchased this and if something should happen to it by accident would replace it with the exact identical model. Comments: Being a professional lab guy I have used a refractometer just about like this in the lab to test specific gravity on fluids, I’m sure the lab paid a lot more for the one I used. I find the quality to be very good and easy to read if you are in good lighting. It didn’t need calibrating when I received it, it was spot on. I wear glasses and didn’t have any problems with or without my glasses on with the rubber lens piece. The price is right and I highly recommend this product to my friends. Comments: This is a pretty cool device and the price is the best part! It is very easy to use. I used the pinpoint calibration fluid to calibrate this, because I have read many articles saying it is better to calibrate at a known SG than to calibrate with distilled water. And since a reefkeeper will want levels of SG 1.026 and 35 PPT, it makes since to calibrate at that exact level. When you drop water on the glass, be sure to use only 2 or 3 drops. At first I was dumping a ton of water on the lens, I eventually figured out that this made it harder to read. Now I use two drops and it works great. My other advice would be that if you do not have 20/20 vision, you may not want to buy this, the display is kind of small and the lines are close together. Be sure you use it in a room with a lot of light. If it is hard to see, let it sit for a couple minutes and the blue line gets darker. All in all, I am very happy and plan on getting years of use out of it. 4 out of 5 stars because of the small display. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: WOW! Ordered Thursday afternoon, standard ground shipping, received it on Monday before 2pm. That has to be the fastest I've ever received anything. When they say order before three and they'll ship that same day, they mean it. This is my first Refractometer and I am very happy with the ease of use, I was a little unsure about having to calibrate it, however, when I did calibrate it, I barely had to move the screw. I had a refractometer/thermometer plastic submersible thing-a-ma-bobber. Hated it, algae grew on the swing arm, gave me inaccurate SG and temp and it was more of an eyesore than anything else. I am very pleased with the product and am very pleased with the customer support that MD gave me. I would absolutely recommend this product to friends/family as well as recommend Marine Depot 110%!! Thanks Marine Depot you guys rock! Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: The refractometer is as easy to use as a swing arm salinity tester, and this one was the lowest price I've found. Since it costs less than most salt water fish or larger corals, and measure the salinity much more accurately that a swing arm device, its definately worth the money. Set up was extremely easy with the inclosed directions (basicly just put distilled water on the plate, adjust the reading to "0" with the enclosed screwdriver, and you are done). Definately worth getting if you have a salt water tank. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Marine Depot Aquarium Refractometer - This item is a good value for the money. Most hobbyists should be satisfied with it. No one should settle for an inaccurate hydrometer when these cost so little. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Excellent price. Came with a hard case, instructions and already calibrated. Proves my swing-arm is off by one degree (lower). I expected more then one degree difference, but am plenty happy. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: This product is excellent! I would recommend that all hobbyists own a refractometer. They are more accurate than hydrometers and also take temperature into consideration. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Great product, received flawless! works great! My hydrometer was auctally off my .04, I know it doesnt sound like much but a salinity 1.030 will brown out some corals quickly, trust me! It's now at 1.026. It came with plenty of instructions, and the case isn't bad at all. Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.
