Comments: I've had this filter for a few years, and never liked the way it's made. It's a pain to open it to change media. You have to work at it to get the seals lined up so that it wont leak. And you have to fill the cartridge with a funnel to avoid spilling media everywhere. I also do not think the water is going thru the media basket, 1/3 of it must be going around it based on the gap around the media basket. It performed so-so until recently, when it began leaking from where the motor housing attaches to the canister. When I pushed the power button on the motor housing to turn it off, I got nice little shock. The motor housing isn't meant to come off, so it's not like I can take it apart and replace a gasket. I really can't believe people are still buying this model. I have noticed all the good reviews have come from people running it on freshwater tanks. Maybe saltwater is just too much for it. I was running it on a lightly stocked 30 gallon with a snowflake eel and some chromis. I clearly do not recommend this filter. Forget the hang on types and get a good canister filter. They are worth the extra cost and set-up.

EXTREMELY BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE

Comments: I own 2 of these units....purchased seperatly...after buying the second unit, I discovered it had a bad air seal.....did all the troubleshooting etc...took the unit back...I was told to return the unit under warrenty due to a crack in the lid...when i called customer svc. The 1st time all was ok...just send it in and we will send you some extra carbon upon return to cover shipping costs..(the unit is about $100 in canada)..5 weeks later i get a huge box back with a filter no carbon at all not even what is supposed to be included with the unit....none and missing parts to boot...long story short, called back got hung up on 2 times. The next call I ask to speak to a supervisor and the person that answer said they were....again asked about the carbon that was to be shipped as well as the missing part.....a week later I get another box via fedex with the missing strainer.....NO CARBON......this all took place between july 18 2011 and sept. 5th 2011 to this date I have not received any carbon.... All in all marineland makes a good product when you get a good one that works.....if it doesn't they will replace it but don't expect much more than that.....I own 1 tank, 1 led strip, 2 hot mag. 250's, and a penguin 250 ......all work great its just terrible customer service!

The Best!

Comments: sorry to see some peeps had bad results with this. i had the on my 60 gallon with 2 oscars and other type of fish that produced more than average waste. i ran this filter for 10 year with no problems and now looking for replacement parts just to use it as a back up filter. i used it to rid of free floating ich with the hepa filter. works great to this day. only had it leak a couple times when i was careless about putting it back together. this filter out performs canister filters twice its size. really easy to clean. high flow rate with it full of carbon along blue filter and your set! clean all the part good and will last you many years

Crap

Comments: The H.O.T Magnum is a very poor filter. The D-Ring and other seals and gaskets are poor fittings and quickly loose a seal leaking air into the system. Several times I would come home from work and have microbubbles all over my reef tank. I gave up trying to fix the problem and purchased a new Eheim.

Lite duty use

Comments: The first time I used this unit, it worked for 20 minutes. After some clattering I opened the unit to find the internal magnet broke in half. I super glued it and it worked for two days. Again the magnet broke in the same place. I glued it again with epoxy glue. This only lasted 30 minutes. So now I'm looking for the replacement magnet part. If this one gives out, then I know better next time not to buy Cheap.

A great product

Comments: These small canisters get the job done. I like using two of them one at each end on 55 to 100 gallon tanks. One will have carbon the other will have chem stars and ceramic cylinders and both will have Filter Max 3 intake sponges. This keeps the water clear and low in odor and maintains a great bacteria colony for nitrification. And with the intake sponges you wont have babies sucked up the pipe. With this setup you can clean one filter one week then the other next week and see virtually no spike in nitrite or nitrate. Even with a compressed load of cichlids. Gotta love it. Just be sure to clean the bottom of the filter well below the media container and around the impeller area. Squeeze and rinse the sponges in the water you remove during water changes and you will save most of your helpful bacteria that they hold. Enjoy.

Comments: I upgraded my 30g to a canister filter and overall it does a great job and quiet. Maintaining is the hard part, very messy and alot of parts. If not cleaned weekly, debris builds up on the bottom which could be a nitrate problem.
