Love it, and so do my aquarium inhabitants. This is the second one I purchased since the fist one did not start on its own anymore after 6 years. I took the suction cups off and glued a magnet to it for ease of movement.

Better than SEIO (TAAM)
by

Comments:
I was frustrated with my SEIO P1000. Prop broke and TAAM has a no-can-do customer service program on parts. I bought a MJ400 with this mod. I also purchased the Sure Grip 50 magnets. I'm very happy with the amount of water flow I get. Seems to match the spec. It is quiet with no chattering that others are experiencing. It did run it for 2 days continuously on before using with my Natural Wave wavemaker. Now it is continuosly cycling on-off every 3 minutes. I have only had it for 1 month, but is does not chatter at all when it clicks on. I keep it about 3/4" below the surface. I oriented the prop guard as instructed (closed slot on top), and I smooshed underwater cement into the top 4 open holes to prevent vortexing -- perfect!
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Good and Bad

Comments:
Well I have good things to say and bad things to say about this mod. first the good, the bigger white prop is great, puts out ALOT of flow, and is very quiet. Now the BAD, the smaller black prop is loud, I think it is the prop hitting or rubbing against the housing wall. Now the REAL BAD two things about this mod. 1. with the bigger white prop, if your maxi jet isnt at least 2 feet below the surface what will result is a vortex tornado of water that gets sucked into the powerhead, along with that comes a loud sucking sound which is very annoying. The worst thing is that I lost two fish in two days. The problem is that the sucking power of the white prop is so strong that any smaller to med size fish swimming a little to close will get sucked right to the prop housing resulting in a slow DEATH, NOT GOOD. Yeah this mod is cheap but I lost 85 dollars in fish in less than 2 days.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Nice product! went from using 4 Koralia 4's to 2 of these. These things are really surprizing, they push massive water flow with the white impellers.I did not try the black impeller so not sure about that one.I would have gave these things a 5 star but one out of 2 that I bought was running in reverse alot.If you are handy in modifications it is simple to fix though.Overall a good product, nice and quiet with good flow.Has room for improvement on design though.by the way these are running on a 110 show tank, sps dominated. Also I used custom mounts so I can not rate the mounting system

For such a cheap and easy to install product it sure kicks the crap out of the competition ($200 pumps and what not). It is quiet and efficient and produces a TON of flow! All the more expensive pumps better be worried and up their game to keep up (which would be good for both us and them so it's a double bonus). This mod kit is simply brilliant.

Serious Performance!

Comments:
I've got a 300 gallon reef that needed flow. I've spent a ton of money on the "other" wavemakers (and you know who they are). This little kit is an elegant, effective solution that surprisingly out-performs the other products. Best of all, it does it at a fraction of the cost...literally. They advertise 2100GPH with the larger impellar retrofitted onto the MJ2100...and from the feel of it, I think this is accurate. If your tank is smaller and not able to handle such a strong flow, you still have the option to use the lower-flow, smaller impellar (included in the 1600 upgrade kit). Simply put, this setup is so cheap, you can't go wrong. Instead, you'll be pleasantly surprised. If I were those "other guys", I'd be very worried at this serious competition.

I guess it's possible that mine were defective, but these things were LOUD! A decent little hum when engaged, but then every 15-20 seconds on one or the other, you would get a resonating buzz that I could hear from way across the room. I've since picked up a pair of Tunze 6025s and I can't hear those even when I try. Less flow, yes...but the MJs made my tank look like a scene from the Wizard of Oz!

The water movement is AMAZING but the occasional noise is not. The directions say it is "normal" but it is super loud at times. I have it in a 210 gallon "tall" tank and it is almost to powerful. If you need to move a lot of water and a noise is not an issue then this is the best deal around.

Comments:
The Maxi-Jets are always good, but the upgrade kit produced a lot of noise when on - I had to modify it (cut out the tab that makes the impellor correct if it starts going the wrong way) to stop the incredibly loud buzzing it was making. Also, I find that this only worked with the large impellor - the small one made noise no matter what I did...

Comments:
The amount of flow from this modification is great! The construction quality is also very good. However, I am disappointed that the pumps get noisy with time. I have two of these kits. One became so noisy after a month it had to be removed. The second lasted about 3 months. No amount of cleaning/soaking helped. There must be some wear occuring along the bushing(s). The pumps were on a timer (30 minutes on and 30 minutes off for 12 hours each day) that may have hastened their demise.

Comments:
bought these mods to try out in one of my three big tanks to add more flow. Trying to find a cheaper alternative to echotech power heads that I have in my 265 gallon and loving the flow but not the price. The echotech are way over priced for what they do and the equipment that comes with them. After reading some reviews on message boards and the reviews here, I decided to try them out. WOW what a difference they can make to a plan old maxi jet. The flow is great the undertow they create is great at keeping the sand clean, no dead spots. The tangs love to swim thru the flow. The maxi mod is bigger then the echotech but nothing to justify the paying out the nose for. You don’t need to buy the sure grip magnet either, If you have a large mag-float 125 glass cleaner you can glue the maxi-jet to the mag-float and get the same results. Placing the maxi jets on the seio wave maker is also a great idea. The seio goes full power and then drops down to low power, never shutting the power head off completely then ramping back up to full power. Since I added the wave maker it made my tanks flow work even better. Once I started the wave maker I could see suspended partials floating around and making their way up and out of the tank. Some complained about noise? I had the enitial noise upon start up and then that stopped. So I can not complain about that. Some complained about wave makers? My seio is perfect, no noise, no vibration just nice smooth wave action every thirty seconds. I don’t know about the suction cups because being in this hobby long enough (19 years) everyone pretty much knows suction cups suck and just about every little power heads comes with suction cup mounts and they never last longer then 6 months to a year. So why bother. I just glued mine to the mag floats and be done with it and save even more money. If you want awesome flow but not break your wallet or hear your wife or husband complain about the money get the mod you won’t be disappointed th

Crashing Waves!
by
Andrew Ward
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 2/15/2008 from HARDWICK, MA UNITED STATES
Comments:
I set up two of these in a 6 foot long 125 gallon tank. I used the higher output option on both pumps with some reservations based on what some of the other reviews said about "too much" water flow. They work perfectly. Instead of plugging them into my wavemaker, I set them both up an inch below the surface of the water on opposite sides of the tank and run them continuously eliminating stop start noises and problems. Every so often they create a vortex and grab air from the surface blasting microbubbles into the tank. It's a perfect simulation of a crashing wave on the reef that looks so real my fish think they've been thrown back in the ocean. Achieving the correct distance from the surface along with random water circulation is key in achieving the crashing wave effect. As far as the health of your fish and inverts goes, this product gives you the best bang for your buck.

Lots of broad dispersed flow!!! The Product comes with two Propellers, a small black one and a large white one. Using the white one it puts out TONS of flow. Its noticably superior to my Korelia 4's. both in flow and on startup. I have it on a JBJ ocean pulse and it starts right up on every cycle without the rattling the Korelias often produce. I also recomend buying the magnent mount. they are rock solid despite the thick glass on my 210 gallon tank. My korelias hardly hold on at all. Be carefull however they are very strong magnets and can hurt you or break each other if alowed to get too close. (I have a blister to prove this) However I highly reccomended getting both the pump and magnent mount.

I use the MJ1200 and the SureFlow upgrade as one of the 3 powerheads on my 54gal bow-front tank. The Sureflow upgrade is great, but i do use the smaller of the two impellers because 2100gph would be way too much. On that note, the 1600gph that the smaller impeller creates is a lot of flow for the tank already, and the corals (mostly soft, some SPS) love it on the wavemaker I am using (red sea wavemaster pro). For those inclined to use the 1600 flow instead of the large prop (2100), i would suggest however using a MJ900, as you will get the same flow with the small impeller (1600) at less than half the wattage (8.5w as opposed to 20w!). Hopefully MarineDepot will make a MJ900/Sureflow bundle soon. I will be the first to buy it! Also while pricey, the sureflow magnetic mount would probably be a good idea as the MJ suction cups just dont stick after a few months. Tank flow summary for 54g bowfront:Red Sea Wavemaster Pro wavemaker controller in reef mode1-MJ1200 w/sureflow 1600 using small impeller2-SEIO 610(?) opposite the sureflow (need to replace seio, it chatters too much upon wavemaker startup)3- MJ1200 with dual arm rotating deflector triangulating on the other 2 powerheads
