Maxspect Gyre Generator Flow Pump Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

Next Generation of Water Moving Technology

The Maxspect Gyre 50W (maximum flow rate - 5000GPH) is the world`s first "Gyre"- generating water moving device for aquariums. Compared to traditional powerheads and wavemakers that are based on propeller nozzle flow technology, the Maxspect Gyre is based on advanced crossflow technology which produces massive horizontal water movement leaving little to no dead spots in its wake.

Gyre Generation - New -Crossflow Technology

A) Virtually no dead spots
B) Evenly distributed flow rate throughout the entire aquarium
C) Water bounces back from the other side to create a full circulation, ie. generating "gyre flows"

Other Pumps - Standard Propeller Nozzle Technology

A) Dead spots with relatively poor water movement
B) Very strong flow in the center, making coral placement very difficult
C) Very weak flow near the other end of the aquarium

Why gyre generator and not wavemaker?
Wavemakers excel in making waves, while waves are spectacular to watch in motion, they are in fact moving the majority of the water vertically up and down, with relatively low horizontal movement, especially near the bottom of the aquarium.

On the other hand, gyre generators excel in moving sheer flow of water from one side of the aquarium to the other. The sheer flow of water is so strong that i would bounce back from the opposite site to achieve full circulation within an aquarium, ie. generating "gyre flows".

Gyres are ocean current systems that basically move the water in a circular way. A spiral oceanic surface current driven primarily by the global wind system and constrained by the continents surrounding the three ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian). Each ocean basin has a large gyre in the subtropical region, centered around 30° north and south latitude. Smaller gyres occur at 50° north latitude in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The direction of a gyre`s rotation is determined by the prevailing winds in the region, with the large subtropical gyres rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comments: For the price of $299 this pump does plenty. I currently had a MP40 and a MP10 at each end of a 4ft 60 gallon. And this one pump moves more water than both MPs! There are pros and cons to going with the Gyre or an MP. An MP has a much slimmer profile and takes up less space so for tanks less than 30-40 gallons an MP might be better, even if your paying more. However for tanks larger than 40 gallons and up go with the Gyre, not only is it cheaper, but the pump's flow is much broader and even and will clean and suck detritus from the furthest ends of the tank. And after having it for over a month, i have noticed better polyp extension from my corals. On the con side for the Gyre, yes there is a noticeable humming noise if you set it past 50%, even after the break in period, but i rarely set it that high. When you do, its to really kick the detritus out of nooks and crannies or on much larger tanks like 5ft and up. I've read on forums there are ways to lessen the sound with silicon grease on the impeller bearings or putting floss between the magnet and glass.

Comments: The great thing about this item is the current/water flow consistency it provides and different settings. My corals love it and when cleaning, you're always able to position exactly as it was before removing. I've noticed some corals when cleaning powerheads, if powerheads not put exactly back in the same position/water flowing, it may irritate one coral and effect another or even cause another to die. The Maxspect Gyre has notches for settingdirection of flow so you Always are able return it to the exact same spot/position! This will save time and keep your fish & corals happy!

Comments: Just set my new 130 up on my 100g mixed reef. Could not be happier. Others speak of sound. Mine is dead silent. Clear instructions breath of fresh air in this industry. Such a nice wide movement. Important to mount controller at easy to read eye level-not easy to see but will get used to. Was using two mp's. Kept one mp to lower opposite corner to move water behind rock wall to eliminate dead spot. Planning on removing gyre once a week for thorough cleaning. Love mine!

Comments: I bought this for a 40 breeder thinking I could turn it down and it would be silent. It was pretty loud until I put some filter floss behind it against the glass. This made it virtually silent. It replaced 2 mp10s that were starting to get noisynoisy due to failing bearings on the dryside. Not only is the sound better but the flow in the tank is leaps and bounds better.

Comments: Put 2 of these in a 90 gallon. 1 probably would of been fine, but they tend to get a bit noisy when turned more than half way up and I have a center overflow which wouldn't of worked out that great. Replaced 4 other powerheads and within 2 weeks the green hair algae I've been fighting the past 1 1/2 years is completely gone. They move a ton of water.

Maxspect Gyre Silent

Comments: First off I will say this pump is loud. It is much louder than my mp40's. However, the water movement is as promised excellent. It moves way more water than my mp40s. I have one pump on my 5 foot 30 inch deep tank and it moves plenty of water. However anything over 40% it is so loud my wife will make me turn it down. I contacted CoralVue and they are shipping me for free the Maxspect Gyre Silent Suspension Magnet Mount. I am hopeful this makes a difference. So if you are buying one make sure it has the new mount before making the purchase.

Comments: Excelent water movement, Dead silent,Magnet seems a little weak for it's size let see how it performs over time. Friends have had issues with snails breaking impellars. Overall like the pump and want to see how it holds up long term.
