Maxspect Gyre Generator Flow Pump Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

New! Silent Suspension Magnet Mount dampens vibration and minimizes noise.

Next Generation of Water Moving Technology

The Maxspect Gyre 50W (maximum flow rate - 5000GPH) is the world`s first "Gyre"- generating water moving device for aquariums. Compared to traditional powerheads and wavemakers that are based on propeller nozzle flow technology, the Maxspect Gyre is based on advanced crossflow technology which produces massive horizontal water movement leaving little to no dead spots in its wake.

Gyre Generation - New -Crossflow Technology

A) Virtually no dead spots
B) Evenly distributed flow rate throughout the entire aquarium
C) Water bounces back from the other side to create a full circulation, ie. generating "gyre flows"

Other Pumps - Standard Propeller Nozzle Technology

A) Dead spots with relatively poor water movement
B) Very strong flow in the center, making coral placement very difficult
C) Very weak flow near the other end of the aquarium

Why gyre generator and not wavemaker?
Wavemakers excel in making waves, while waves are spectacular to watch in motion, they are in fact moving the majority of the water vertically up and down, with relatively low horizontal movement, especially near the bottom of the aquarium.

On the other hand, gyre generators excel in moving sheer flow of water from one side of the aquarium to the other. The sheer flow of water is so strong that i would bounce back from the opposite site to achieve full circulation within an aquarium, ie. generating "gyre flows".

Gyres are ocean current systems that basically move the water in a circular way. A spiral oceanic surface current driven primarily by the global wind system and constrained by the continents surrounding the three ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian). Each ocean basin has a large gyre in the subtropical region, centered around 30° north and south latitude. Smaller gyres occur at 50° north latitude in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The direction of a gyre`s rotation is determined by the prevailing winds in the region, with the large subtropical gyres rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comments: after owning this product for a few months the casing on the wiring began to split. Coralvue did send me a replacement motor, with new thicker wiring, but i already pulled it out of my tank and had it ready to sell. flow was ok, nothing spectacular. Ecotech Vortech or Tunze pumps are much better quality. i own both

Comments: An excellent product that replaced 6 high quality poverheads. The current it generates is much better for the corals . Easy to mantain as well.

Worst Pump Ever

Comments: When I purchased the Gyre at the start of my tank build I tested it in fresh water. Right out of the box I noticed that one side of the Gyre was more than twice the rate of the other. I was not ready to use it and put it back in the box figuring there was an adjustment or maybe it was not put together adequately. After getting my saltwater aquarium going 10 months later I tried it again with the same performance issue. I took it apart according to instructions. The first problem was that the edge of the rubber bushing plug, which you must pull out to access the flow cage, tore easily. I then finished the disassembly and soaked all the parts in 50% vinegar solution for a half hour, and checked the shafts. Turning one side manually turned the other end of the shaft, but not vice versa! So the design is not symmetric. I put it back together, and the issue persisted: one side worked the other side barely turned. I turned up the flow to maximum and the problem persisted. Another thing I noticed is how incredibly weak this flow is. I was running a MaxiJet 1200 in the same location, a 295gph pump, and it was easily double what both sides of this Gyre produced. Since the advertised rate should have been at the edge of what my reef tank can handle I can only assume that this is a defective unit and that either I was given an inadequately inspected refurbished unit, sold as new, or that MaxSpect's quality control is extremely poor. I am contacting Marine Depot just in time to get this problem solved. Otherwise I am out a lot of money for a piece of junk and this would make me quite angry. I will edit and modify my review if this problem is taken care of as I can only assume it will be based on Marine Depot's reputation and past experience with them.

Comments: Right out of the box I could tell this was a quality product. Setting up was single. I had two power heads in my 65 gallon tank and this replaced both of them with better flow now. No more dead spots. I use the pulse feature which creates a nice flow. I can't see ever using anything else

Very loud

Comments: I bought 2 of these units. One is quiet, but the other one is very loud. No matter what I do or how many times I take it apart and put it back together, it stays very loud. I'd recommend looking at a different powerhead if you want ensure you are getting something quiet.

Full Circulation, Great Price

Comments: Cannot beat this level of circulation for the money! Had my XF130 since they came out, using it in a 50 gallon cube. I have almost vertical with slight tilt upward so the flow breaks the surface. Forward speed set only 50%, alternating with backward speed set to 70%. If I go much faster it becomes a snowstorm with the small grain sand I am using. One unexpected benefit of vertical mounting instead of standard horizontal is sand dunes on the bottom of my tank are slowly marching around the center rock formation of my cube, and the changing topography adds interest and keeps my sand looking fresh. Very happy they included the feeding feature that allows you to push just one button and have it shut off for feeding but auto restart later (with my other tanks I often forget to turn pumps back on). My only wish is that they made a small Nano size for my 20 gallon, call it an XF100 and I will buy it.

Comments: This product is the best powerhead I have seen. There is no need to run others. The water flow is massive. On a eight x four x three foot tank at full power the flow will blast water all across the tank and come back ,making a whirlpool action picking up all detriment off the bottom and dumping it in overflows. Its all most too much current at full power, running at 50% seems good enough. This product does exactly what it says,no dead spots, even on a large tank like mine, the water current settings are nice to customize perfect grye sway just like an real reef in your tank.Very pleased, money well spent.Cheers!

Comments: The pump works great. Lots of flow. I already had two pumps pumping water from the sides on my 200 Gallon tank but I wanted a wide flow back-to-front. This fit the bill. I bought the smallest one and I still have to keep it low ~30%.
