Maxspect Gyre Generator Flow Pump Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

New! Silent Suspension Magnet Mount dampens vibration and minimizes noise.

Next Generation of Water Moving Technology

The Maxspect Gyre 50W (maximum flow rate - 5000GPH) is the world`s first "Gyre"- generating water moving device for aquariums. Compared to traditional powerheads and wavemakers that are based on propeller nozzle flow technology, the Maxspect Gyre is based on advanced crossflow technology which produces massive horizontal water movement leaving little to no dead spots in its wake.

Gyre Generation - New -Crossflow Technology

A) Virtually no dead spots
B) Evenly distributed flow rate throughout the entire aquarium
C) Water bounces back from the other side to create a full circulation, ie. generating "gyre flows"

Other Pumps - Standard Propeller Nozzle Technology

A) Dead spots with relatively poor water movement
B) Very strong flow in the center, making coral placement very difficult
C) Very weak flow near the other end of the aquarium

Why gyre generator and not wavemaker?
Wavemakers excel in making waves, while waves are spectacular to watch in motion, they are in fact moving the majority of the water vertically up and down, with relatively low horizontal movement, especially near the bottom of the aquarium.

On the other hand, gyre generators excel in moving sheer flow of water from one side of the aquarium to the other. The sheer flow of water is so strong that i would bounce back from the opposite site to achieve full circulation within an aquarium, ie. generating "gyre flows".

Gyres are ocean current systems that basically move the water in a circular way. A spiral oceanic surface current driven primarily by the global wind system and constrained by the continents surrounding the three ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian). Each ocean basin has a large gyre in the subtropical region, centered around 30° north and south latitude. Smaller gyres occur at 50° north latitude in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The direction of a gyre`s rotation is determined by the prevailing winds in the region, with the large subtropical gyres rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comments: Neatly packed with spare parts...who supplies spare parts like this with their pumps? I'd be fine with a cardboard box instead of the fancy metal one to lower the sale price. On my 29g Biocube this pump has power to spare. Right now I'm running it at 30% constant speed playing with rotor position and messing with the pulse mode. So far I couldn't be more pleased. The fish really seem to like finding the different areas of flow and riding them, they seem much more active. We'll see how the first tear down and cleaning goes but as of now I know what I'll be using on my current work in progress. Good shhhtuff.

Comments: I run both the 130 and 150 Maxspect Gyres in full gyre mode in my 170 gallon reef tank. It is more than enough flow for the most demanding corals. These pumps are silent once broken-in. They add no heat to the water, use very little power, reliable as anvils, and are virtually maintenance free. I now have these in mind when I design a new reef tank of any size. They are fully adjustable and simple to tune.

Not So Great

Comments: I have a Gyre 150 on a 55 gallon (36"Lx15"x24"tall). I have it set on 20% and feel this is the most the tank can handle. I tried a number positions with horizontal at the top as the preferred location. It is the only location that really sets up a gyre flow. Vertical in the back, shooting to the front of the tank, does not set up a gyre over the whole tank. Only about half of it. Constant or pulse modes are the only ones that work well. Alternating gyre is useless. In reverse the flow is very poor. I even tried switching rotors. In that case only one rotor is really working in any direction. Shooting toward the bottom only stirs up the sand, and even if you have coarse gravel the gyre does not set up over the whole tank length because you're shooting along the short dimension. I settled on the horizontal at top location. If you want a lot of flow in one direction then it is a good pump. if you want waves or turbulent flow get something else

Comments: I'm what's known as a "marine fish nut". I now have three of these Gyre pumps for two of my four marine systems. I gave it five stars ( and I'm a hard marker if you read my reviews about temperature regulators and other items) these are two things in one- which my ecotech and Tunze are not-- BOTH powerful AND QUIET ( silent actually) NICE! Kudos to Maxspect for seeing a lacking in competitor's lines and improving them! JR

Comments: Out performs all the others. I have a 300 gallon reef tank that I was using 5 powerheads on switched to the tunze wavebox and with in 5 days was so pissed I bought this one. I was the best piece of equipment I've bought. I placed it 3 inches below top and it brought stuff up for the sand bed and from under rocks. My tank is 3 feet deep and 3 feet wide and this has no issues making a wave. It's a must buy.

Comments: So far, this is the best investment ive made for my tank. Surface turbulence up by 110%. I may buy another pump for the far side of my tank works better than my two ecotech mp40's combined imo The packaging is by far over the top, the tin box with foam may end up in another project haha although id rather seen a simpler for of packaging in place for an apex to controller box connection. Of course that part is extra....

Comments: I don't like the Gyre 150....I love it! I own a 120g reef....had a MP40 and a MaxiJet for circulation. The downfall with the MP40 is it's narrow flow pattern whereas the Gyre has a strong wide flow that covers all areas! Nomore deadspots on the sandbed...Very quiet, only running at about 40-50%....you won't regret buying one!
