Maxspect XF150 Gyre Generator Flow Pump Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

Next Generation of Water Moving Technology

The Maxspect Gyre 50W is the world`s first "Gyre"- generating water moving device for aquariums. Compared to traditional powerheads and wavemakers that are based on propeller nozzle flow technology, the Maxspect Gyre is based on advanced crossflow technology which produces massive horizontal water movement leaving little to no dead spots in its wake.

Gyre Generation - New -Crossflow Technology

A) Virtually no dead spots
B) Evenly distributed flow rate throughout the entire aquarium
C) Water bounces back from the other side to create a full circulation, ie. generating "gyre flows"

Other Pumps - Standard Propeller Nozzle Technology

A) Dead spots with relatively poor water movement
B) Very strong flow in the center, making coral placement very difficult
C) Very weak flow near the other end of the aquarium

Why gyre generator and not wavemaker?
Wavemakers excel in making waves, while waves are spectacular to watch in motion, they are in fact moving the majority of the water vertically up and down, with relatively low horizontal movement, especially near the bottom of the aquarium.

On the other hand, gyre generators excel in moving sheer flow of water from one side of the aquarium to the other. The sheer flow of water is so strong that i would bounce back from the opposite site to achieve full circulation within an aquarium, ie. generating "gyre flows".

Gyres are ocean current systems that basically move the water in a circular way. A spiral oceanic surface current driven primarily by the global wind system and constrained by the continents surrounding the three ocean basins (Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian). Each ocean basin has a large gyre in the subtropical region, centered around 30° north and south latitude. Smaller gyres occur at 50° north latitude in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The direction of a gyre`s rotation is determined by the prevailing winds in the region, with the large subtropical gyres rotating clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.

Comments: It seems very well-made. Be careful with flow settings. I have a deep sand bed and it blew it around a little bit more than I expected. Start low with the settings and work up as needed. Otherwise I am generally happy with it and it seems quieter than my two MP40s.

Comments: This is a great product, I think I got a little over zealous with my tank.... I have a 65g, 36" long, 19" wide, and 24" deep, I have mainly corals, softys, and plates. I also have a few fish in there. The I got the 150, and even on the lowest settings its a little much for my tank.. I can using this on a larger tank and it would be a thing of beauty. As for now I'm trying to get the flow right for me... Good luck

Comments: I purchased this unit to hopefully replace at least one unsightly powerhead in a 300 gallon DD tank. I was doubtful it could replace all of them but so far I have been running just a single Maxspect XF150 for a week now and the flow is much better than it was while running 3 MP40's or 2 WP60's. A single unit is able to move all of the water in the entire tank. There are lower flow areas but no dead spots whatsoever. It is able to agitate the water surface all the way across the 6 ft tank and the gyre flow created has no problem reaching all the way back to the other side - and this is at just 70% power. I will be bumping up the power but since it was rearranging some sand at the 70% wanted to let the tank get accustomed to the new flow. Runs quietly and is extremely clean looking in tank. Feels like a quality build - comes packaged very well. Very happy with this unit so far. Will probably add a second one as tank fills in - but with a relatively open landscape and rock work situated away from all walls ..... one is definitely sufficient.

Comments: Very powerful, and even with a lot of rock in my 180 reef it does push the water pretty complete. Took out all other powerheads as this seems strong enough for the whole tank. As state some speeds are noisier than others but easy to pick another flow if it bothers you. The best I ever had was a polario in the center and put sand patterns everywhere. This is on par. The others I tried were not able to do that and cost a lot more.

Comments: Having this device running less than one day, these are my impressions....the pump quality is one on par with a precision instrument.very well made. Performance is so good I'm thinking of retiring my EcoTech MP10 as it has operating options closely mimicking the MP10. The Gyre has a much better flow as advertised, however at some speeds it emits a low howl. I am impressed with the Gyre on my 75 gallon tank..........now if it is as rugged as the EcoTech it is a winner !
