I purchased this skimmer from Marine Depot to be used externally on my 120 reef. It has been running for about a month now and I am pleased with the quantity and quality of skimmate it is producing. This skimmer is replacing an HOB Aqua C Remora Pro that was a great skimmer in its own right, but couldn't quite keep up with the bioload on my 120. I noticed a difference in the water quality within a day or so after setting the NXS1 up. Overall, build quality is excellent, which is required if you are going to use it as an external skimmer. One issue to note is that the 1.25 inch UniSeal for the return was leaking in two places when I received the skimmer. I was able to stop the leak with some Teflon tape and silicon sealant. If you are using this as an in sump skimmer, you would not have to worry about this sort of leak issue, but obviously it is critical when it is operating outside of the sump. Two minor gripes -- my skimmer arrived with no instructions and there was no cap for the drain line from the cup. Both of these are minor items and should not dissuade you from purchasing this skimmer as set up is pretty self-explanatory and it's easy to cap the drain if you chose. The real pluses with this skimmer are: the build quality, the production, and easy maintenance. Break in time was less than 4 hours and no adjustments have been needed since set up. I haven't worked with other skimmers in this price category, but in terms of build quality and skimming effectiveness, I have to believe the NXS1 is up there with the best of the best for the 100 to 200 gallon crowd.
