Developed in conjunction with the US Distributor of NP BioPellets* , the NextReef SMR1 is the first media/substrate reactor specifically designed for long term use of larger media.
Evolved from our MR1 Media/Substrate Reactors, the NextReef SMR1 fills a specialized role while retaining the quality and ease of use you'd expect from a NextReef reactor.
Two sizes are available. The SMR1 is 16" tall overall, with a 14" reaction chamber, and the SMR1 XL is 23" overall with a 21" reaction chamber.
The NextReef SMR1 is based on our standard MR1 media/substrate reactors, but with some significant changes...
- Cast blue acrylic for the main body . Made specially for us, it's both thicker and stronger than our standard tubing. The translucent blue color also serves an important purpose - it keeps out light to reduce algae and opimize beneficial bacterial growth. They're great in lighted sumps, or anywhere light exposure is a concern.
- Modified internal plenum assembly. Our original design works great with sponges and small media - the SMR1 eliminates the sponges to reduce maintenance. Since BioPellets and Zeolithic media are designed for long term use, reducing maintainence fosters system stability .
- Higher flow rates and reduced head pressure . The SMR1 comes set up to use larger fittings than our original reactors, so it flows more water with less restriction . The NextReef SMR1 flows enough water to easily fluidize larger media.
The SMR1 features plenums laser-cut from 3/16" acrylic. They're thick, they're heavy, they're strong... and they flow great.
Every NextReef Reactor is hand-crafted in the USA from the highest quality materials, and CAD engineered / CNC cut for a precise fit.

Construction of reactor is second to none and the blue chamber really helps with algae controll. I run the reactor in sump and have no leaks so would be fine out of sump as well.

Using this with NPX Bio-pellets. Very efficient. No dead spots as I've found with other similarly priced units.

I was very pleased with the product untill about 6 months after purchases. It sprung a leak where the blue chamber meets the white housing. A small crack where it was not sealed well. Since it is after 90 days of purchase no returns and is out of warranty. People at next reef were jerks when called about this defect. Will not reconmend to a friend or buy any other next reef product.

I was convinced to try bio pellets and got a next reef MR1. I tried and tried and could not get the bio pellets to move like they should. This is because they were pushing a product with 1/2 inch inlet and outlets. After a long talk with next reef I changed to the SMR1...bio pellets are dancing nicely. Thanks!

I have to say the NextReef media reactors are rock solid. I have 3 SMR1 reactors and 3 MR1's. I need 3 more MR1's and I will be good to go.

I'm very pleased with the SMR1 reactor, it's build quality is excellent, price is right, works as designed and is built in the good old U S of A. This is a must have if you plan on running bio pellets.

This Item came well packaged and no damage was observed upon delivery. The item was out of stock when I ordered it and the site was able to get it shipped out in a timely manner. Setting up this item was ultra easy and operation is easy as well. I T'd off my return line with a ball valve and in this way needed no extra pump. I then left the exit tubing in front of the skimmer intake. I would definitely recommend this item if you are wanting to use solid carbon dosing.

When it comes to NextReef reactors nothing comes close in comparison! This new reactor is ideal for using biopellets with no makeshift mesh mods needed. This all in one unit is troublesome free, sturdy construction, and is built to last. I only use the best quality products for my fish and wont settle for anything less. NextReef certainly exceeded my expectations not only in overall quality but also the thought process put behind its unique design. all you need is a pump and tubing.

I bought the NextReef SMR1 reactor to use with Warner Marine EcoBAK pellets for my 180 gal. This reactor easily handles 1 liter of pellets, could even handle 1.5 liter if needed for up to 250 gal volume. You don't need the XL size unless your tank is over 250 gal.
The NextReef reactor is made in U.S.A., well built, and the plates are drilled out for the correct size for bio pellet use, no sponges to clog up, and no modificiations required. I'm using a MaxiJet 1200 for 1 liter of EcoBak pellets and getting a medium tumble.
