Over the years I've owened just about every type of protein skimmer money could buy. My opionion is this works...but just OK. After a couple weeks of playing around with this I finally have consistant results. First thing is to use a quality air pump. Second, get a good air valve for adjusting air flow. Third, and just as important for dark, consistant skimmate...extend the collection cup up a couple inches. I found it neccessary to support proper volume without blowing overly wet fiz into the collection cup. Anyway, I cut about 2.5 inches of 3/4 inch PVC and modded it to extend the collection cup up two more inches (wrap both ends of pipe in teflon tape or silicone rubber tape...so it fits the I.D. of the base and collection cup). It's not rocket science but works. I have tons of thick, nasty skimmate. Now it works! Air stone skimmers are still the best.

Contrary to what folks have been saying, it works. I wake up to a foaming green tea substance in the cup every morning.
Give it some time, it works. Great value for the price.

It does work and is an ok value for the cost being that its pretty well made. The air pump is under powered,I upgraded to a whisper 20 which is very quiet and provide's great flow rate, all you'll ever need. The upgraded air pump also came with a better quality air flow valve. I use this in a 29gal biocube where it is clipped on to the filter cartridge in chamber one since I couldnt get the suction cups to hold it in place. The airstone needs to be replaced after a couple months, only use the lime-wood one from oceanic since other stones don't make the correct size bubbles.
The skim output of this product while not the cutting edge of technology is sufficient assuming you keep up on your housekeeping and have your water parameters correct. Set up is easy, adjusting the airflow is a little tricky and takes a couple days but completely do-able. Mine produces some skim mate as well as a dark smelly black coffee fluid which I empty as needed. adjust your airflow till the foam just barely reachs the top of the tube.
Remember this is for a small tank if your over producing skim mate it will subside with time as this could also be a sign that your not keeping up with you water change's,overfeeding, under filtering or have your tank overloaded with stock

First skimmer arrived quickly
As for the operation it is a little weird... I have been adjusting for a week or so and have not dialed it in just yet. I know it will settle in but if you are a beginner it will be frustrating. My advice is don't give up, be patient and you will get thru. I have been able to get a little light green skim so far but nothing consistent.

Although not the best skimmer available it is a great addition to any Biocube. The fact that it can be hidden inside the canopy is a major plus. The cup has plenty of nasty water in it every day and I instantly noticed less algae growth on my glass. It takes a bit to get the bubbles just right but all in all I would recommend this skimmer to anyone with a 29g Biocube.
My tank is a 29g Biocube, center section converted to refugium, (no bioballs!) JBJ NanoGlo refugium light, Live Rock, Cheato, Pura PhosLock, and NO Filter. The water is always sparkling clean. I also do a weekly 3.5 to 4 gallon water change.

Great skimmer for size and price. I set mine up so the bubbles just reached the bottom of the cup and walked away. 24 hours later I had half a cup of skimate. Just be patient.

Have only had this unit a short while, but it really works well. It is amazing how much junk it takes out of the tank. I am very pleased with it's ease of use and instalation.

I purchased it to place into my 12 gallon JBJ nanocube DX. I've had mixed results with this skimmer. Sometimes I'll pull out a nice dark cup of skimmate after 3 or so days, and other times the cup will still be dry. For a cheap skimmer it does the job. It's alot better than having no skimmer.

Use this in one of my qt tanks, works great! Have been using it for a year now, no problems. Just have to replace wood air diffuser now and then, otherwise, works as expected.
