The Berlin Air-Lift is a high performance, low cost internal skimmer based on the Berlin Triple-Pass principle. The Air-Lift is powered by a lime wood air-stone attached to an external air pump (not supplied), these compact units are easy to install and maintain.

The triple-pass is combined with a powerful Venturi air injector, greatly enhancing the efficiency of the skimmer. Air bubbles and protein rich water are concentrated in the narrow inner tube, ensuring good mixing and maximum surface contact. The air/water mixture swirls up the inner tube into the wider reaction chamber, causing a relaxation of the turbulent water and separation of the protein rich foam at the water surface, which rises into the collection cup. The air bubbles move down the chamber by the force of the water current until reaching the air return skirt located at its base. The skirt effectively enlarges the diameter of the chamber, eliminating the downward force on the air bubbles. The bubbles then rise up through the chamber against the downward flow of the water (counter current), causing great turbulence and increased contact time. The Venturi air injector produces a consistent quantity of fine air bubbles, ensuring a large surface area for collection of waste materials. The skirt effectively enlarges the diameter of the chamber, eliminating the downward force on the air bubbles. The bubbles then rise up through the chamber against the downward flow of the water (counter current), causing great turbulence and increased contact time. The Venturi air injector produces a consistent quantity of fine air bubbles, ensuring a large surface area for collection of waste materials.

Comments: Im using this skimmer in a couple of Nano Reef Tanks currently with suprisingly good results. Although my tanks are mostly coral and inverts only and see considerable frequent water changes I was amazed at the amount of gunk this skimmer was able to pull from the gin clear water! With out a doubt, along with the Prism and SeaClone this is probably one of the most bashed skimmers on the market. Due to the cheap cost I decided to pick one up and test it out to see if everything I herd was true. Its not the most effcient skimmer on the market but it does indeed work. If you have a small tank or an AIO tank and need a small simple compact skimmer then this one rates some consideration. Its low cost and well constructed componets makes it easy to assemble in seconds. It does its best work if its hooked up to a air pump with a good bit of air production. I used a Whisper air pump rated for a 40 gallon tank. It will work better right off the bat if the air stone is soaked in water for a couple of days. I have found that if its set about 1/4 deeper than the water line mark on the skimmer that it works much better as well. Its an internal skimmer, so if you have a standard glas box type tank the skimmer can be hidden from view so as not to distract from the display using the "Living Frame" technique. Again if your on a budget, have a small tank and need a compact skimmer, dont over look this one without checking it out.

Comments: A great protein skimmer! I was concerned with putting the skimmer in my tank. I thought it was going to be big and ugly in the tank. It is actually pretty cool to look at when its on. I have A 75 gallon tank, this is my first saltwater tank. I have a fish only w/ live rock and live sand. I was looking for a cheap skimmer that didnt require a sump, also I wanted to stear clear of the hang on skimmers. I heard plenty of bad reviews on hang on skimmers. So I found the berlin airlift and I am completely satisfied with it. It gets the job done for my application. Also wanted to thank you guys, this is the second Item I have orderd and both items were handled with care.
