Salifert

  • Ammonia and ammonium should be rapidly converted by aerobic nitrification into nitrite and then nitrate and finally into nitrogen gas. If this does not happen then either the aquarium is not fully matured or there is a problem with the tank`s biological system, which can be caused by an excessive biological loading being placed on the system.
  • The Salifert Ammonia Test Kit measures the total amount of ammonia and ammonium quickly and accurately.
  • Sufficient for up to 50 tests and can detect 0.5 ppm of total ammonia easily.

Specifications

Instructions:

  1. Add with 5ml syringe 1 ml of water in the test vial.
  2. Add 6 drops of NH3-1 (watch out caustic!) and swirl gently for 5 seconds.
  3. Add 6 drops of NH3-2 (watch out contains Mercury salts, wash hands after use, keep away from food, see additional warning under the heading WARNING). Swirl gently for 5 seconds and allow to stand for 5 minutes.
  4. Hold the test vial and look through the side of the test vial. Keep the color chart behind the test vial. Ensure that a white piece of the color chart is behind the liquid layer. The values on the color chart are in mg/L total ammonia (that is NH3 + NH4+).
Warning!

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.  NH3-2 contains mercury salts. If ingested seek immediate medical advise. Keep away from food and feed. Wash hands after using the NH3-2 reagent. Remove any spilled NH3-2 immediately with a tissue and afterwards with water.

If NH3-1 (is caustic) comes into contact with the eyes rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek immediately medical advice. If ingested seek immediate medical advise. If any reagent comes in contact with the skin rinse immediately with plenty of water.

Received a bad test kit

Bought this test kit for my very first reef tank to make sure it was cycling properly. I gave a fishless cycle a try and not knowing what to expect, my ammonia levels weren't reading high enough to be in the 4ppm range to start a new tank (ideal bacteria growth parameter) so I added more and waited. Levels still were too low where it would take a long time to grow a bacteria colony so I added more ammonia. This went on for some time with no initial increase above 1.5ppm. Then I threw a shrimp in and watched it break down. Still 1.5ppm. Finally tested nitrites to see if I had made any progress. I got a read which made me realize the ammonia levels must be dropping. I got a 2nd test kit of a different brand and my ammonia levels were off the charts. Wanting to continue the cycle but get down into the ideal ammonia levels for aerobic bacteria growth, I did partial water changes instead of a full change. Five 50% water changes later I was down to 4ppm ammonia. Thank goodness I started with dry rock and some bacteria cultures instead of live rock (I later added live sand which cycled the tank very fast without adding unwanted critters or corals). Tank finally cycled after 3 months of waiting. I've read good reviews for this brand so my defective test kit was likely one of the few. Bottom line, get 2 different brands of test kits, especially when you're starting out.

Just ok

You need to have multiple test kits as they all read different levels. Salifert is decent and the color card is not terrible to decipher. It will however read ammonium and ammonia ions that may be breaking down by your bacteria. For the price its decent but always have a backup to double check your numbers.

Easy & Accurate

Typical of Salifert test kits. They are easy to use and give accurate, repeatable results. I also have their Nitrate, Phosphorus, pH, Calcium and Alkalinity test kits. 5 stars to each.

Better than API

I purchased this kit because I suspected my API kit was giving false readings. Using the Salifert kit my ammonia reading was 0 (correct) while the API kit read 1.0! I will not waste my money on API again and will continue to purchase Salifert kits!

Seems accurate

I've been looking for any accurate ammonia test kit for a few months now and I've tried kits from various manufacturers, including API and Seachem. I'm virtually certain I have no ammonia in my water, since the fish show no signs of ammonia poisoning, they behave normally and I don't overfeed them. This kit seems to give the most accurate reading, with no ammonia showing. the Seachem kit seems to be the second-most accurate kit, with generally no ammonia showing. the API kit, though, consistently shows 0.5ppm of ammonia, while the other kits generally show zero. I'm really not certain if the Salifert kit is the most accurate, but given the test procedure it seems to have the highest probability of being accurate. I hope this helps someone ... all the best !!!

Great Product

I tried many different test kits and Salifert is the best I have used. The test are simple and the result charts are easy to read. The only downside is the price, but you pay for quality.

Fast, hard to read

I was using a Red Sea ammonia test kit. When it ran low, I decided to try the Salifert kit. The Salifert is much faster and simpler. One chemical vs three for the Red Sea and 3 and 3 minute wait vs 15 minute wait. I find the Red Sea easier to discriminate the color differences between ammonia levels. I did do tests using both kits to check conformance. They seemed to measure the same level. The Red Sea is in ppm and the Salifert is in mg/L. That is not much of an issue since at the specific gravity of saltwater, the relationship is about 1:1.

colorblind friendly!

Of the 4 or 5 different brands of ammonia tests I've used over the years this one is by far the most useful. For one, it distingushes values as low as .25 ppm, whereas most of the kits i've owned to date start at 1 PPM, with the color-difference between 0 and 1 being outside of my ability to divine. Additionally, I'm able to accurately read results despite being color blind. I have no idea what colors the different readings are, but they are all noticably darker as ammonia values get higher, and at least personally I'm able to distinguish all of the increments without much guessing.
