Why is boron required?
Boron is present in NSW (Natural Sea Water) in a moderately low concentration (4.4 - 4.8 mg/L or ppm).
It is present predominantly as boric acid and to a lesser extent as borate.
It has several important biological functions and our results show that a too low boron concentration might slow down growth of corals and coralline algae.
Boron also has some positive effect in buffering NSW especially in the range of pH 8.1 - 8.3.
In most aquariums, boron is depleted very slowly yet steadily.
In some aquariums, boron is present in a very high concentration. This is due to use of bad quality salt with highly elevated boron concentration or supplements with elevated boron concentration.
About Reef Boron
This supplement does not contain the toxic boric acid compound (see above) but is, within 24 hours, gradually converted predominantly to the desired boric acid. This procedure has advantages since when added to the aquarium a locally high concentration will be present until evenly mixed throughout the whole aquarium. If it were present as boric acid then some slight but temporary toxic effect could take place. This danger has been prevented with our procedure. Salifert is the only one offering such an essential additive.
Also, all ingredients are of a pharmaceutical quality or even better. This ensures that no unwanted elements are added to your valuable aquarium.
Other requirements
Other elements such as strontium and many trace elements may have some similar effects as boron. That is, accelerating coral growth and allowing many biological processes to take place. They can be easily supplemented with our Natural Strontium, Trace Soft and Trace Hard.
Directions:
Shake before use.
Use a boron test (Salifert’s Boron Profi-Test) to measure the boron concentration.
This supplement should be dosed when boron concentration is lower than 4.4 mg/L (ppm).
Each 10 ml per 100 L (25 gallons) will increase the boron concentration by approx. 0.25 mg/L (ppm).
It will take approx. 20 hours before the supplemented boron is measurable!
Keep out of reach of children. In case of contact with eyes rinse with plenty of water. Only for aquarium-hobby use. Not for human consumption (directly or indirectly)!
Active ingredients: blended boron salts.
