Salifert Phosphate Profi-Test

  • If phosphate is present in too high a concentration there may be an increase in growth of undesirable algae and if the phosphate level is higher than 0.04 mg/L the growth rate of corals and calcareous algae may decrease by as much as 90%.
  • Washing fish food (a rich source of phosphates) after thawing can significantly reduce the input of phosphate, and using a high grade, phosphate free activated carbon can also help to keep phosphate levels as low as possible.
  • The Salifert Phosphate test kit detects, in less than 5 seconds, the level of phosphate present.
  • There are two different ranges within the kit: a low range for phosphate-phosphor from 0.01 - 1 mg/L and a medium range for phosphate-phosphor from 0.02 - 2 mg/L.
  • Sufficient for 60 tests.
  • Can be used for marine, fresh and garden pond water

Specifications

Erroneous results might be obtained when the carbonate hardness is higher that 20dKH. This corresponds to an alkalinity of 7meq/l. Normally the carbonate hardness is well below the above mentioned values.

Warning!
Irritating: PO4-1 contains < 3.5 M HCL.

R36/37/38: Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.

S26: In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice.

Instructions:

  1. Add with the syringe 10ml of water in the test vial.
  2. Add to this 4 drops of PO4-1 reagent and swirl the test vial gently for 10 seconds.
  3. Add to this 1 level scoop of PO4-2 reagent and swirl the contents gently for 30 seconds.
  4. Place the open test vial on top of the color shart on a part of the chart which is white and compare the colors looking from the top. Read the corresponding phosphate content. An intermediate color corresponds to an intermediate phosphate content.

The phosphate values are in ppm Phosphate. If you prefer a reading in ppm Phosphate-Phosphor then divide the reading by 3 or use the table given below.
Higher Sensitivity
Should you require an even higher sensitivity then double the water sample and the reagents. The scale should then be divided by 2.

clumpy

Im happy with the quality of the Salifert test kits, but on the one I received, the PO4-2 was real clumpy and hard to get a scoop, even after shaking and trying to break it up.

Waste of money

I bought this to double check the accuracy of another brand of low range tester. The light blue at the low level is impossible to see and I tried many different light sources.

Vague and inconsistent

I needed a low range test consistent and clear to help with algae and coral growth, this was not it, after trying more than 5 times i got results that were inconsistent and not even the right color, the test was shades of blue and i got some odd green color. Stating it does low range was misleading as well, they just tell you to double the dose then divide by a number to get the low rate which is still tought when i cant even understand what shade and color the original color was. When i guessed it was at 0.10 I bought the Hanna colorometer instead and it tested 0.38 instead! which made more sense because i still saw algae and slow coral growth.

So, So

I like that it provides phosphate levels between 0 and 0.25 mg/L unlike API test kits that give you 0, 0.25 and higher. The color chart is a bit difficult to read due to the light shades of blue. I prefer a liquid form of reagents, but this one has one powder form. Kind of a downside to the kit.

Simple Test

This test is simple to use...very clear directions. Also a low range test, however the scale is hard to read. If you have glasses, wear them, because you"ll need them to distinguish between the very similar shades of blue....one thing for sure though, you can definitely tell if your phosphates are TOO high. I would recommend this for the hobbyist that needs a general idea of phosphates...if you need very clear accurate results, don't buy this test.

Get a Hanna Phos Meter

I works well if you dont have any algea or cyno. it will read undetectable when you obviously have a phosphate issue. Spend the extra cash and get a Hanna Phosphate Checker.

Great test kit

Some have suggested that phosphate test kits are difficult to use, but if this one is representative, I don't see the difficulty. Drip in some drops; stick in the reagent; swirl. Read the color. Pretty simple. My only complaint is that it would be great if the instructions could be summarized on the back of the color comparison card --- all you need is a crib sheet after you've done the test once or twice. I also didn't compare the results with other test kits, so I can't remark on how well it performs where it counts --- but the results seemed to match what I was observing in the tank.
