Manufacturer Info

Sea Swirl Aquarium Supplies
The Sea Swirl, a popular aquarium wavemaking device, was developed by Aquarium Currents Manufacturing Inc. in Georgetown, SC. The company evolved from an earlier retail store called Tropical & Marine Paradise in Stroudsburg, PA. For 15 years, the masterminds behind the Sea Swirl worked with thousands of aquarium hobbyists on hundreds of different applications. Over time, they saw many products come and go; some worked, some didn’t. This inspired them to apply their years of experience and interaction with hobbyists to create only the finest, most productive aquarium products. The makers of the Sea Swirl promise it is only the beginning in a long line of groundbreaking aquarium supplies.

Sea Swirl review

I have been using the see swirl ever since they were first manufactured, and in fact and I know the guy also who created it. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five has to do entirely with the unprofessionally printed instructions. After I guess around 30 years the manufacturer ought to have a illustrated manual to go with the device, and also a selection or even a recommendation for output settings. For example, a 45° Y connector for the output. As far as the device is concerned I think very highly of it, and have been using more than one for at least 30 years. As promised

I bought the 3/4 inch sea swirl for my return on my 120gal about 4 months ago. It's was pretty intimidating when you open the box and stickys on the unit and warnings all in the instructions saying "if you do this the warranty is void".."if you do that the warranty is void". BUT if you do follow the advise given the Sea Swirl works great! It truely does provide random flow. I love it and so does my tank.

A Must Have!

We use a 3/4 Sea Swirl in tandem with an Echotech MP w40 on our 90 gl reef tank. The new Sea Swirl we just purchased replaces a unit we bought used that was a couple of years old. We find that the Sea Swirl works extremely well when located on the opposite end of aquarium from the MP w40. In fact, we have taken lots of measures to avoid heat convection from equipment into the tank, and we use AI SOL LEDS, MP w40, Sea Swirl and a Reeflo Hammerhead pump to minimize heat transfer.

unique flow

Ive had the 1/2" for 4 yrs now, still working well. Initially I had 2 on a 75 gallon SPS reef splitting a 1000pgh pump, with loc-lines and inductors on each end. The sweeping action is abosultely unique among wavemakers (except the zoomed power sweep pump, which is junk). I recently installed them on my 180 SPS reef; this time I modified them by attaching tunze nanostreams 6045 (1200pgh)on the ends instead of connecting it to an external pump. This way I avoided the jet steam from the inductors, and utilized the high volume, low pressure flow of the tunzes. I tell you the turbulence it stirs up is unbelievable. In that tank I already have 2 vortec mp40s in lagoon mode and 2 tunze stream 6105s pulsating, but the crossing of the flows with the sweeping nanostreams creates tornados/vortices in the tank, swirling detritus out and teasing the polyps so that they are fully extended all the time (even in the center of large colonies). I was able to get rid of the unsightly wavebox. The sea swirl finally helped me find the flow quality and quantity Ive been looking for to sustain my tabling acroporas. It also looks really cool doing it.

Would buy again

Pros: Corals really like this, am using on a 90g and my tank is looking much better. Easy to install. Good quality construction, very quiet. Will be purchasing a second one. Cons: Kind of wide for a narrow tank (48x18x26). I had to push my t5 fixture back a little to allow room for this. I wish the nozzle pointed down a little more. Seaswirl recommends to install this on the front of the tank blowing back to the corals, but you have to buy a corner mounting bracket to accomplish this separately, if you have a canopy.

great product

easy to hook up. really makes some nice turbulance as it crosses path with a powerhead that is perpendicular to it. the outflow when straight out is high enough that when power goes out it doesnt let large amounts of water to siphon without drilling a siphon break hole (which you can do if needed). the outflow is a lockline hookup so you can change it if you want to.

Swirl This

While this product works great, its design is really flawed. Its overpriced to begin with. Next, it can't get wet, so you're scared its going to electrocute you if it falls in. To top that you can't keep your lid on while its in operation. BTW where are the o-clamps they deem neccessary, maybe they should be included considering steep price. However, all that said; if I didn't prefer to have my lid on I might not dislike the product. It mounts sturdily, so I'm not that scared it will fall in. It also works really well, and doesn't stir up air bubbles as it functions. The adjustable water spout is nice, but needs to be longer.

Sea Swirl

I've been using the Sea Swirl for about seven years. For the money, you can't beat it for creating currents and changing the circulation patterns in your reef. I use the 1" model on a 220 gallon reef system. The only down side is that they only last for about three years before the oscillating motor seems to give out and you have to buy another Sea Swirl. It's fairly easy to install and set up and provides hassle free operation for the aforementioned three years. Then, you have to buy another.
