Flourish Excel? is a simple source of readily available organic carbon. All plants require a source of carbon. This is typically obtained from CO2, but, may also be obtained via relatively simple organic compounds (such as photosynthetic intermediates). Since both processes occur simultaneously one can derive a substantial benefit with the use of Flourish Excel? either alone or in conjunction with CO2 injection. Flourish Excel? also has iron reducing properties which promote the ferrous state of iron (Fe+2), which is more easily utilized by plants than ferric iron (Fe+3). Flourish Excel? is an integral component of Seachem?s plant products and is recommended for use with the entire Flourish? line as well as our Flourite? and Onyx? gravels. Contains no phosphate or nitrate.
DIRECTIONS: On initial use or after a major (> 40%) water change, use 1 capful (5 mL) for every 40 L (10 gallons*). Thereafter use 1?capful for every 200 L (50 gallons*) daily or every other day. For smaller dosing please note that each cap thread is approximately 1 mL. Note: The 2 & 4 L container?s cap is 10 mL. DO NOT OVERDOSE! IN CASE OF EYE EXPOSURE, PROMPTLY & THOROUGHLY WASH EYES WITH WATER & SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION.

I use this in cherry shrimp tanks that don't have CO2 and it seems to work great for me and doesn't seem to have any adverse effects on the shrimp. Highly recommend.

My plants have done very well with this product. I have fish and so cannot use carbon dioxide and this has been a great substitute.

Used as an off label treatment, along with a phosphate reducer, killed off a stubborn brown/black algae infestation in my 55 gallon fresh water aquarium in 7-10 days, without injury to my fish. Will keep a supply of this around !

I bought this to battle black beard algae that was taking over my Amazon swords. This was a stopgap until my CO2 system was set up. It worked pretty well and is fairly economical.

I picked this up after reading how effectively it deals with tough algea, including the dreaded BBA. I have to say that after trying it myself I am completly impressed with how effective it really is. I overdosed on the initial treatment by 300% (as I read others have done) and BAM! No more algea of any kind within 3 days. It's been several weeks now and still no algea. No adverse effect on the fish. (125G with Discus, Rams, Tetra's, etc.) Water clouded up a bit at first but was clear in 1-2 days.
Oh yeah, plants are greener now as well. New shots everywhere. (Swords, Anibias, Java Fern.)

haven't ever tried this as a substitute for CO2, but works great to get rid of BBA when used as described on the various planted forums.

I have kept a co2 injected/planted tank for the last 5 years, even though I dry fert. on a regular basis sometimes the bba creeps up on you, 3 cap full of this stuff at water change and bham in the first hour the bba is turning red (starting to die) and gone in the next 72 hours.
