Best I've Found

Comments:
Seachem's Reef Salt is among the best mixes I've found, and I've used a boatload of them -- Tropic Marin/Pro, IO, Reef Crystals, Red Sea Pro, MEI Crystal Seas, and several others. The Seachem mixes are consistent, mix cleanly, and provide very good parameters. Mixed in pure (RO/DI) water, pH is always 8.2-8.4 without any additional buffering. But most importantly of all, my corals and my more sensitive inverts do much better with this salt than with any of the other readily available mixes. It isn't perfect (Ca tends to be rather high), but it's very good. Don't bash this (or any other) salt mix if you are mixing to non-natural salinities. At 34-35 ppt salinity (or 1.0255-1.026 sg), this mix provides excellent Ca, alkalinity, and Mg numbers. If you mix to 1.022 sg (about 28.5 ppt, or about 80% of NSW salinity), your numbers will be off (low) no matter what salt mix you use. My test levels for this salt mix have always been right around the following: Ca 520, alk 9.75 meq, Mg 1420, mixed to 34 ppt salinity at 78 deg. F.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Good Salt Mix

A lot of people bash this salt mix, but for me it does really well. My magnesium is constantly 1300 in my tank with no supplementation, calcium of freshly mixed salt at an sg of 1.025 is 460, KH is at 10. I also measure no phosphates, but I am using DI water so if you use tap water that may be a different story. It's my experience that every batch of salt from the same manufacturer is not always the same. I have tested salt from the top of a bucket and salt from the bottom and had different results. Things can become "un-mixed" during shipping. What you have is the larger or heavier particles settle to the bottom while the smaller and lighter ones come to the top. But I digress... This salt mix has worked really well for me and the elevated calcium levels keep my sps and lps very happy, with only a kalkwasser drip to keep things constant. I'd definitely say this is my favorite salt mix.

Good Mix - Not perfect

I have spent a lot of time trying to find the perfect salt mix and I think I'm still looking. The salt mixes at exactly the parameters it states on the bag for s.g. and pH, as well as alkalinity and calcium. It also has lower phosphate than TropicMarin. However, it mixes fairly cloudy, even at temp, and there is a fair amount of undissolved particulate matter. If you can get over those two problems, then it seems to be a good mix. Also, you should know that it contains extra chemicals to alleviate problems with using tap water. I'm a bit of a purist and frankly, if you're using tap water, you need to do more homework, so I wish they would make this without those chemicals. However, should your RO/DI unit unknowingly fail you, maybe its a good thing this mix has those extra chemicals.

I have been running this salt for approximately a year. My most recent tests revealed: Calc 480 DkH 8 Salinity 1.025 Magnesium +/- 1200 Nitrates +/- 2 Phophates 0 As far as I am concerned my tank remains pretty rock solid. The majority of my SPS are growing fairly quickly and the couple LPS corals in the tank are growing at a steady pace. There are other factors that can effect coral growth and polyp extension other than just salt. I rarely add any elements to my tank and have not generally had a reason to. From Hydnophora to Blue Torts and Sunset Monti's and Zoanthids / Blue Xenia I have experienced fairly nice growth. I switched from Reef Crystals and will never go back.

Doesn't measure up

Actually none of the salts I've tried measure up to reef tank requirements. I used all Seachem test kits for these measurements. Great test kits by the way. With this mix I get the following: Salinity 1.022, Calcium 325, Magnesium 875, Total Alk. 2.5, Borate Alk. 0.5, Calcium Alk 2.0, pH 8.1. I calculate I have to spend another $20 worth of additives to bring this mix up to reef specs. 18tsp of Kent turbo calcium, 35tsp Brightwell magnesion-P!, and 2tsp Reef Buffer. By the way the other salts I've tested are almost identical, Instant Ocean and IO Reef crystals. I would pay twice as much if someone would create a salt that was actually reef specs. It would just be easier.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

I've been keeping reef tanks since 1984 and I have used several brands of salt through out the years (Instant Ocean, Reef Crystals, Tropic Marin, HW Marinemix, Coralife, Kent) Until now I haven't seen any salt mix that could induce such a polyp extension on the first water change. So far I have made a few routine changes and the difference is evident. I've read many threads online about this salt, most of them unfounded, but I'm confident enough to say that this is the best salt mix on the market today.

I've been using this salt for over a year and I find my tank levels to be perfect with every test. My pulsing xenia have exploded all over the tank and are growing like mad, my corals have more vibrant colour than ever and my fish seem to be more energetic. This is by far the best salt I've ever used.

The Reef Salt is the first formulation I found to work well for my nearly all reef tank. The calcium levels are spot on. And a big bonus: there is almost no need for other supplements either. I plan on saving quite a bit of money by reducing my overall supplementation. Doing so offsets any added cost of this premium salt.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

This is great stuff!! I have not had to add calcium or any additive for my reef since I started using this salt. It buffers the Ph and has taken a lot of worries out of keeping the water parameters just right.

I was very unhappy with the Seachem "REEF" salt I purchased. While it may be ok for fowler tanks, it certainly didn't test out to reef requirements or even close to what they advertise as the parameters to expect. The alkalinity which they stated would be 4-5 tested out at 2.1 (I couldn't believe it so I bought a new test kit--same story--low alkalinity.)The magnesium, instead of being around 1270 as advertised was 900. The calcium would have been high but ok at 460, except for the fact that the pH was so high (6.1) and the alk so low that it caused the calcium to precipitate--in the mixing tank!I have NEVER had another salt mix do that and I will never buy Seachem salt again! So much for believing Seachem's promotional claims. I generally like Seachem products but this one's a black eye for the company as far as I'm concerned.I may not be an expert reefer, but I've had a tank for 7 years and used a lot of salt mixes and text kits. Unfortunately, I've come to the conclusion that these companies don't manufacture salt with the correct elements for reefs because they want you to buy their additives to "fix" the water parameters that the mix didn't live up to.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.
