Rio 400 Pump - Good for price

Comments:
I am using this pump for various things with my saltwater tank, mainly for mixing water and hopefully to pull RODI water for auto topoff from a bucket. Not sure if it will work with that yet. I'll update when I try it.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Rio 50 Review
by
IVAN VOZNENKO
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 2/6/2010 from WALDWICK, NJ UNITED STATES
Comments:
The Rio 50 might seem a little small at first, but it's size is key in it's applications. Works very well in small reef tanks and produces great flow to keep algae at bay. This pump is PERFECT for small pico and nano reef setups. Also This is a good pump to use for mixing small amounts of saltwater for smaller saltwater tanks. The price tag is excellent for such quality performance.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

I use the Rio 2100 to power my protein skimmer. Works great right out of the box and is very quiet. Also it runs cool to the touch and so does not add any heat to the water. I purchased this power head to replace the one I have used for over ten years.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

I have used the Rio 1400 and 2100 for in-sump returns and for my protein skimmers for years. They last a long time, are sturdy but the metal impeller shaft rust over time. Better buy and replacement ceramic shaft. Those last forever.

Backup Fountain Pump

THOMAS MCFARLAND

Comments:
The new powerhead I ordered will be used as a backup for a three tier fountain. I have been employing RIO POWERHEAD pumps of much larger capacity since 1998,and have found them exceptionally reliable. They run 24/7 with only occasional impeller replacment. I am in the market for an 1100 powerhead, but am told the older model, which I have three of,is no longer available for impeller replacment.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

I am not new to Rio POWER HEADS. I started using them 12 years ago in my MMFI algea turf scrubber filter sustem. I would say 12 years is a good service record! I orrigionaly was introduced to these pumps by MMFI do to it's mild impact on micro organisems. the older models were noisey, however, the improved newer models are quiet. I love these pumps! they are incredably versatal! Very dependable! I highly recomend them. Signed: Joe, A happy owner of 2 Rio+2500

I used a new 2100 to run my Aqua Medic protien skimmer. It lasted two nights! There was a crack down the back, on the inside sealed part. This let water into the electronics and fried it. What a buy, two nights for $50! On to better pumps for sure. I could only imagine what this could of done to my fish when shorting out if is was in the display tank instead of the sump!

This was my first Rio pump and I'm not that impressed. This thing vibrates like crazy and the noise level is unacceptable for use anywhere you would be for more than 5 minutes. I used it for circulation in a 10 Gallon tank and couldn't get it to quiet down. I swapped it out for a Maxi-Jet that I was using to pump RODI water from a storage tank and the noise went away.

I have to pile carbon bags ontop of this thing to keep it from vibrating all over my sump. It also sticks from time to time. pumps need to be cleaned but when this one sticks it's clean inside. I'm switching to a Mag 12 for better flow and no noise. The mag 12 i have now pumps water back into my 135g reef. It dosn't make a sound!!

Unexpected Problems

Comments:
I was advised that this pump would work in freshwater to add aeration as well as some movement. It works fine as a powerhead to add movement, but the parts which accompany the pump do not operate as well as another power head I have to add air to the current to aerate the tank. After several false starts and a call to the help line, the pump will not operate as an aerator, it just puts water out of the tank through the air in line. I would not recommend this as an aerator.

Works fine, but heck of a noise. Loud deep humming, plus other clattering sometimes. May be because it is pushing up 40 inches of head from the sump/refugium. The noise makes me wonder if it will give out due to excess strain.

Well what can i say other than this pump rocks! I have a TRUVUU Mighty Max wet dry and finding a pump that was not too big was not easy. None the less with a few adapter mods its the best out there.

Rio 800 for protine skimmer

Comments:
The Rio 800 is needed for proper flow on the Aqua-Clear protein skimmer. I have found that the impellers last about 2 years because my skimmer is on the tank. But if I had a sump system the impeller would last much longer.Because I like the slow curent in both my 125 and 75 gallon tanks I have multiple units opperating in each. These are great little power heads that will help in the circulation of aquariums.

Works wonderfully and the accessory kit that comes with the pump is excellent. The flow value control knob keeps you from having to worry when powering up the sump and gives the overflow ample time to fill before engaging the return pump. Only neutral comment I will offer is that the pump does generate a little heat and in my 65 gallon marine tank I had to drop my heater by two points to keep the water at a stable 75-76 degrees

These are short lived but they have high head for gallon per minute. This 200gal pumps to 5 feet while I find I need to go to a 275 gal to get same head result. But I have gone through too many and if the ones I have now prove to be as bad as the past I will not repurchase. One of the last two I bought here was noisy and short lived the other did not make it a year. I have a Maxijet (2 year warantee) in one tank now and I will try Mag-Drive when and if the rio 800 I just purchase proves to be the same as last ones I purchased. Look at the 180 day warrantee compared to 2yr offered by the Maxijet or one year offered by Mag-Drive. The cost is the only saving grace. They should be silent when purchased and if not return them as that is only a sign of a defective unit. I am only sorry I did not take the time to return my last ones. It seemed that returns were not worth the shipping costs on this one so I did not bother.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Exactly as advertised. I've used this line of Powerheads for over ten years, and they're always dependable, but I change them every two years because after two years of 24/7 I don't want to push it, even though I think they'll last MUCH longer. Think about this: This thing runs NONSTOP for over a million minutes in two years.

I found this pump to be as powerful to the Mag 5 if not more. The biggest difference is that it is much more quiet. Only had for a year and still going. Does generate some heat as I am using directly in the sump with a rio 2100. Will heat aquarium another 2-3 degrees but can be easily managed by a cheap 10 dollar fan from home depot over the tank

Comments:
I use this pump to move water for water changes to and from my tank. I have used previous Rio (abit smaller) pumps in the past and have always been pleased with their output, but this makes changing water in my 72G tank a quick and painless task. Changing 30 gallons of water takes only a few minutes each way. Plus with the barb fittings that come with this pump it makes it VERY easy to attach hose- usually a difficult task. Only problem with Rio pumps is it seems like after a while of start up/shut down tasks they seem to stop working. I have never tried to repair the pumps, since they are so cheap to replace, and usually with a larger more efficient pump. Last Rio 1400 last about 2 years doing the same service as this new 2100. We will see how long this lasts, but these one seems to be even better built!
