Tunze DOC Protein Skimmer 9005 Information

The model series of the Comline DOC skimmers has been developed for an effective and modern protein skimming process in marine biotopes from 200 to 2,000 liters (52 to 528 gal.). They stand out for their compact dimensions at the same time ensuring a high foam cup capacity, and producing a very high throughput on account of their air capacity of 650 or 1,00 l/h (171 or 343 gal./h), for example, depending on the model. They can be placed directly in the aquarium or in cabinet systems with a variable water level.

At an immersion depot of 240 to 290 mm (9.4 to 11.4 inches), the Comline DOC skimmer models can be placed easily and discreetly in the aquarium directly. The inlet of fresh water can be set at between 5 percent and 70 percent. They can also be used in sumps with variable levels from 100 to 280 mm (3.9 to 11 inches). The accessories supplied have to be used to ensure the generation of a constant internal water level. The water circuit is totally open and operates at a fresh-water inlet of 100 percent; depending on model, a water throughput of 1,200 l/h or 2,400 l/h (317 gal./h or 634 gal./h) is achieved, distinctly improving the gas exchange in the aquarium.

Skimmer cup and foam reactor are one unit in all TUNZE DOC skimmers. Every cleaning of the skimmer cup leads to the reactor being cleaned at the same time, and thus a very constant and efficient foam production is ensured. During the cleaning process, the Hydrofoamer remains operational and automatically flushes the jet and the air passage.

Specifications:
  • Recommended for marine aquariums up to 500 liters (132 gallons)
  • Dimensions: 4.9"L x 4.4"W x 14.8"H
  • Water throughput: 1,000 l/h (264 gal./h)
  • Air capacity: 500 l/h (132gal./h)
  • Collection cup volume: 0.4 l (0.10 gal.)
  • For in-sump operation the Extension Set 9005.400 is required and sold separately.
  • Power Consumption: 12W
How do you select the right DOC skimmer for your aquarium?

The Comline DOC skimmer with hydrofoamer has an open water circuit with can be controlled. Apart from the air output, the flow rate of the skimmer determines the output of the DOC skimmer. In addition, due to its biotope composition, every marine aquarium has a different sensitivity with respect to the organic load. Based on a standard marine aquarium with soft corals, the data on the suitable skimmer size may differ in other biotopes. For this reason, the aquarium volumes recommended for the skimmer should be reduced in case of sensitive biotopes.

Low Sensitivity
In soft coral aquariums with long-polyp corals and anemones, for example, the share in dissolved organic matter may be higher, sometimes it may even be vital. In this type of aquarium, the recommended aquarium volume can be used without deduction.

Medium Sensitivity
A medium organic stability is usually found in mixed aquariums inhabited with soft and stony corals (LPS) and (SPS). Filter-feeding animals, sponges, et cetera, are found there frequently as well. For these aquariums, a reduction of about 20 percent of the skimming capacity is calculated. A skimmer for 1,000 liters (264 gal.) should thus be used for an aquarium of about 800 liters (221 gal.) which has this kind of reef design

High Sensitivity
Aquariums with primarily small-polyp stony corals (SPS) require an especially high degree of purity. They should have no load of phosphates or nitrates worth mentioning. Good oxygen saturation and very clear water are the prerequisites. Comline ODC skimmer is also often used as a “stand-alone” solution in these aquariums. This type of aquarium should be reduced by about 40 percent in volume for the skimmer volume mentioned.

High Sensitivity and High Load
Hard coral aquariums with a high population of fish require an extremely high skimming capacity. The skimmer has to ensure the degree of purity for the hard corals at an above-average high fish load. If the Comline DOC skimmer has to be operated as a “stand-alone” solution in these aquariums, a high-performance is required. This type of aquarium should be reduced by about 60 percent in volume for the skimmer volume mentioned.

NOTE: Most Marine Depot products are sold in 110V conversions. Please verify your country’s volt conversion before making any electrical purchase.

Comments: The skimmer (9006) arrived with a detached air line (no problem) but I had to silicone some of the body work to make the motor stay in because it must have been damaged in transit. I have been using this skimmer for a year now and at the best of times it has produced no more than a few teaspoons of skimate per week. Most weeks yield nothing more than a teaspoon of skimate. At its best it produced so much foam that the foam leaked out of the top holes in the collection cup and back into my sump (not ideal.) The skimmer has been very temperamental. Chemi-pure, polyfilters, macro algae and activated carbon all caused it to stop working. It has been given three major cleans over the last year and the latest was yesterday because it has stopped producing foam four days ago when I added a GFO reactor. It is kept at a constant nine inch sump level which a Tunze representative told me was fine. I have had a diatom and cyanobacteria problem for most of the past year and courtesy of a DSB my nitrates are at 40 ppm (this is high but without the DSB they would be dangerously high.) The warranty is unfortunately up so I'm going to get a new skimmer today before my water parameters take a dive.

Skims great but poor construct

Comments: I bought this skimmer to replace my Aqua C 240 that was just too big for my sump. The skimmer started skimming great in just 24 hours. It takes up only a fraction of the space of the Aqua C. The only think I don't like is that it is cheaply made. It feels like a snap together toy. It falls apart very easily. The bracket that hold the extension tube in place falls out with with only slightly touching it while doing other servicing in the sump. I tried to move it in the sump and when I tried to lift it the bottom got pulled off and the motor fell out. You have to reassemble parts of it every time you clean it or move it. Very poorly built for the price.

Still Waiting

Comments: Received the DOC this week, still waiting on it to break in. Although I didn't initially get the sump extension kit. Will be purchasing it soon for "optimum effectiveness". Had to do some adjustments in my sump to reach the minimum 9 1/2 inches water depth. It is much quieter than my previous clone skimmer. I have high hopes for this skimmer will update further when the break-in is completed. 4 stars for now, until some progress is seen

Comments: I considered this among a list of skimmers that folks had recommend. I chose this one because over others because, skimming ability being equal, this one had a smaller foot print, was short enough to fit in my sump and make taking the cup out easy without having to even get on my hands and knees and be knocking the top of the tank. Installation was a breeze with clear directions and the magnetic holder in my sump was great since I didn't have to set it up on a riser to get the suggested height. Took a solid day to break in but seems to be doing well now. I'm working on adjusting the foam at this point. Had it a week. Doing great!

Comments: I have used varous Tunze products over the last 15 years. Have always found them to be well engineered, energy efficient, quiet and dependable. This skimmer replaced a Tunze 230 (similar to the classic line) that was still running and pulling junk after 10+ years. Recently updraded to a Refugium and the old guy wouldnt fit. This skimmer is perfect for a crowded sump as the foot print is incredibly small for the power you get. Plug and play and immediatly started pulling deep green junk. Recommended if space is an issue

Comments: the skimmer works great, how ever the quality of the unit is bad. the cover that goes on the front does not hold tight, and im using it in my sump so i purchased the exit pipe, which connects to that same cover. after putting in 3 times and having it fall apart, i finally used zip ties to hold the cover in place. this seems to be working. i would give it 5 stars if it wasnt for the poor construction.
