Based on some previous reviews, I was a little concerned about buying this unit. However, I was able to convert the unit to work in my sump in about 5 minutes using the instructions and it started producing waste in about 24 hours. It is expensive, though.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

The 9010 is VERY quiet, and small footprint, those were my major considerations. Yes, the instructions were bit confusing, and after shipping you have to make sure all pump and hoses are connected properly, but using in sump and also in tank (must buy the $40 magnets) it has worked well. It takes a while to get broken in but helps maintain a better environment. There are virtualy no HOB/internal skimmers that have real performance and are also quiet. I use it on 120G - its ratings are a bit high but other than a competitive Del--tec for more money nothing touches it. Also have used Remora for years -- noisy and smaller diameter reaction chamber. Not in the same league.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Don't let all the good reviews fool you this skimmer stinks. I have had it for nine months and never got any more than a tiny bit of skim. I have two friends who also bought this over priced cheaply built skimmer. They have had the same results. Stay away from this skimmer. Don't let my miskate become yours.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

I like this product, but it is a little quirky. The height needs to be adjusted within a certain range, but the instructions are not too clear on the optimal range. In fact, the translations for the english instructions, could be better. This is my first skimmer, so it is difficult to really compare the item. I would say it was good and I get some nasty brown tea for my skimmate none stop while my live rock cycles. That part is great. The reason why I gave it 3 stars and not 4 is because the first one I got had a broken shaft connection inside the skimmer. Only after 3 days of thinking I was incompentent did I actually open up the skimmer and see that the connector was broken. I have to say though, This store did a great job of getting me a replacement and taking the defective product back. So yeah, skeptical about Tunze's build quality for this item.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

So far it stinks. I can not get any foam to make it ti the collection cup, the instructions are very limited and there are virtually no online help. If anyone knows any tricks with this skimmer I would love a post. Vic

Great support from Tunze even before I ordered one (thanks Roger). The screw air adjustment makes it easy to tunze to the exact color of skimmate you desire. Removing the collection cup for cleaning could not be easier. Compact size too!

Good Skimmer-Bad Instructions!

Comments:
I replaced my old Red Sea Berlin Protein Skimmer with the Tunze DOC Protein Skimmer 9015. The Tunze 9015 is now working great and is producing 10 times as much waste as my old Berlin Skimmer. The Tunze fits very nice into my small 20 gallon sump and is relatively quiet. Now the bad part. The instructions really suck! It took a few days to set up the Tunze Skimmer properly with the necessary included parts. The instructions given in English do not translate well from German making the instructions vague and very difficult to understand. Most people are going to install the Tunze 9015 unit into an aquarium sump, however you can install this unit directly into a tank. The instructions on page 35 refer to the "sump" as the "cabinet filter" and the instructions for modifying the unit for the cabinet filter are poor. The three items that are necessary for proper operation are: (1) Install the sleeve below the cover, (2) Insert the output pipe with blue foam sleeve into the cover with sliding unit, (3) Replace the the sliding cover with slots at the bottom of the skimmer with the enclosed cover without slots. Until you do these items the skimmer will not work properly and will be very noisy. For any questions call Roger at Tunze (512) 833-7546, Roger is very helpful. It is very hard to undersatnd how such a good skimmer could have such bad instructions! Good luck...You will like this skimmer once it is installed properly!

I have had this skimmer for over almost a year, and just hate it. It arrived broken. Instead of replacing it, I had to speak to Tunze directly, who shipped me a replacement part. I had to re-assemble the whole unit again once the replacement arrived, and the re-assembly was ridiculously complicated. The parts are ill-fitting, and to clean it and put it back together is an exercise in luck. The skimmer function is adequate, but for the price, that should be given. If I didn't spend over $300 (with sump attachment) I would have tossed this in the trash and bought a different brand. (I am writing this review because I just spent the last 1.5 hours trying to put it back together after cleaning.)
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

During shipping the venturi tube came dislodged from the pump so the skimmer initially made no bubbles at all. A simple reinsertion of the tube solved the problem. This is the easiest-to-tune skimmer I have ever owned. I can dial the color of the skimmate I want and it pulls out loads of junk. After only one week I see a noticeable reduction in cyano in the tank. Do make sure to buy the magnet holder.....worth every penny!

The first few months I was really dissapointed and was seriously thinking about getting another skimmer. Reef Central has awesome customer support for Tunze, after making the adjustments that the rep suggested (i.e. disregard the instructions and fully open the air valve) it works great, pulls about 100ml every day of thick, nasty, black, smelly skim. The collection cup needs to be cleaned about every 3 days or production is cut in about half.

This one is the same as the 9010 with a taller cup to allow you to run more air. It skims on the dry side. I switched over to the foam extraction unit and it can skim much more wet skimmate. I'd recommend getting a 9010 instead and the extractor for about the same price it skims much stronger. Its also a very silent skimmer that requires no fiddling. Vendor support is great on reefcentral!

I purchased this skimmer months ago and it has yet to give me more than a teaspoon of foam. I walked through all the steps with the Tunze rep to repair it he had to send me parts, put them in and it still does not work. I sent it to the rep in Texas to fix, meanwhile my $50.00 sealife systems skimmer skimmed the gunk out, got the tunze back, put it back it in sump and it still does not work. Long story short, the skimmer does not work. It is collecting dust in my garage while I save up some extra money to by a different skimmer. Be careful, Marine Depot does not let you return these if it was used in an aquarium. There goes $400.00.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

I had to have a Tunze so I dumped the EuroReef (that replaced the ASM) & true to everyone's testimony this much smaller skimmer moderately outskimmed the others. After the high wore off, the reality that the cost:benefit ratio was very unfavorable hit me - but at least now there is NOTHING better to upgrade to IMO. I do agree the body of skimmer feels thin & cheap, also the mounting options (tinker toy set) is awful.

I have one on a 37g tank with a 10 gallon sump. So far I've had it for a little over a month and I'll tell you what, the air stone skimmer I was using on my 20g produced more skim then this thing...I've tried to adjust it both wet and dry and I get the same results. close to nothing. one thing I really hate about it, it the way it's put together... it's made of cheap this plastic that snaps in place to hold it together..it's not what you'd expect for the money Tunze charges for this thing...the other day I took it apart to clean it, another part that was glued in place came out with the pump..I think for the money you can buy a much better skimmer IMO. One more thing. If you have an issue with it and you vent a little frustration about the product Tunze has only one guy in the U.S. taking care of everything..rub him the wrong way and you will get no help.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

If you are looking for a good skimmer to fit into a tight sump this is the skimmer for you. It produces consistent foam even with very little cleaning of the cup. The best part is the skimmer will sit @ idle until the waste builds up then it pulls out gunk like a champ.

I have had a couple of other skimmers and I must say that the Tunze has become my skimmer of choice. Small footprint, excellent skim production, growth capacity (ozone, etc) and the simplest set-up imaginable. You pay a little more, but it is definitely because you are getting your moneys worth. Thank you Tunze for a great design!!! Couple the Tunze with the outstanding customer support that you folks provide and you have the very best experience possible.

This is a most advanced unit. 21 watts is incredible! For the power it holds. I did have to take apart because in shipping the venturi came off but all is fine and the unit makes no noise. The skimmate is absolutley the most concentrated I have ever seen. I have used Euroreef,AquaC etc... This is the most efficient design I have seen yet. Worth the extra money!

After a nine day break in the skimmer started to produce a thick white foam with more production everyday. I've had other skimmers, the Tunze seems to be the very simple to operate with only one air adjustment screw, which so far has not needed any adjustment. I would have trouble fitting any other skimmer with this rating in my sump because of size restrictions. The manual is a little vague in terms of putting the skimmer together. So far the skimmer seems to be the perfect skimmer.

This is probably the most under-rated skimmer on the market today. Pro: Compact and efficient; fairly quiet Con: Documentation difficult to understand; expensive I've tried Euro-reef 80rs, AquaC 120, AquaC Urchin Pro, and this 9015 pulled out the most stuff with the smallest footprint.
