The "Nano" model series has been designed for the use in reef biotopes up to 200 liters (52 gal.) and is gentle to the plankton in operation. The DOC Skimmer 9002 removes up to 80 percent of organic waste matter, such as protein and cellulose, from the aquarium water. Very little space is required in the aquarium, and its handling is very easy. On account of their construction, these models are particularly quiet during operation. On account of the high demands in stony coral aquariums, this skimmer should be used only in aquariums with about 100 liters (26 gal.) of water. Mixed aquariums or soft coral aquariums up to 200 liters (52 gal.) can be set up without any problems.
Principle
By means of the water jet of the Nano pump and a high-performance jet, a fine pearly air mixture is produced with is released into an easy-to-clean skimmer cup through a newly developed reflection system. The protein-containing aquarium water diffuses into the skimmer through the opening in the bottom and on the rear, which is gentle to the plankton, thus suitable in particular for breeding tanks with living plankton.

I was sucked into this skimmer to go with a intank RSM 130d media rack. The media rack is fantastic. Mr Steve has pushed these skimmers like their unbeatable. If his media racks and skimmer cups were this crapy Intank would be a faint memory. After 11 months I took the RSM topless and went to led from t5's. After consulting people that stay on the cutting I was pointed to an Aquanaxx skimmer. After baby sitting the 9002 for almost a year what a relief!!!! Tunze USA customer service is great. As a German myself the 9002 is nothing more than embarrassing. I think the Aquamaxx might have more acrylic in the collection cup than the Tunze has plastic in the 9002's body. It's. too bad Tunze didn't upgrade the 9002 when they released the 9004.

This product was easy to install, and is foaming, and I have cleaned the cup out of some waste product. Even with my slight adjustments it is not removing the nitrates from my aquarium after as few weeks. Even had a nitrate spike, my tank has 2 small live rock been cycling for over a month and one damsel.

Have had skimmer running for about two weeks. Started pulling excellent, dark, pretty dry skimmate after three or four days. Has been very consistent, no overflowing, little adjustment needed even with my water level changing due to evaporation. Only complaint would be that the air intake is a bit noisy, but no more so than any similar skimmers. Probably wouldn't bother anyone in a living room, but with it next to my bed I prefer to turn it off overnight. There's an easy mod that can be done to add external air control and a silencer though, so easily fixable. Great skimmer for the money.

So far my experience has been pretty much consistent with most of the reviews written in this forum. The DOC 9002 setup was simple, it took a couple days to break in, but after that I have been very pleased with it's performance. In addition it is by far the most quiet skimmer I have owned.

First skimmer I have ever owned, so not much to compare it to. I have it in my sump so fit was no problem. Skimming on a system with a 17 gal display with a 25 gal sump. Initial quality seems very poor. The plastic that the square base is made of is paper thin and as cheap as you can get, for real. The collection cup is good quality plastic. The pump seems to be made nice and heavy. I did the modification with the air line and the skimmer is completely silent. I have to look for foam to make sure it is working. No microbubbles and nice foam after 24 hours, I would recommend to do the airline mod and you will be glad you purchased this skimmer. Nice dark skimmate on a tank that has just finished cycling with no livestock yet. Lets just hope the base of "thinnest plastic on earth" lasts, I will just pay attention and be careful with it during maintenance. Other than that, couldnt be happier.

I have been using the tunze 9002 for about 3 years now. It is an excellent skimmer - a bit pricey, but- you get what you pay for. After the break in period, it is consistent! Best used with an ATO!!! very finicky about water level- once a set level is established- once a week cleaning is all that is required. The only other drawback to this skimmer is the pump. I have the older model skimmer and the pump is near impossible to find! The newer model uses the tunze silence pump- an excellent pump in itself! Unfortunately, the older skimmer can not be modded to use the newer skimmer pump. If or when my current pump fails, I will be buying the newer style without a question! Tunze builds excellent equipment!

This replacement skimmer is rockin in my reef tank. I purchased it to replace the stock skimmer that came with my Solana 34gl "All-in-1" system. With it's small foot print and VERY low noise level made it an excellent choice for my tank. Being able to control the amount of air infusion is an added feature that been a life saver, for my tank. What I saw in the waste cup is astonshing in comparison to what the stock skimmer pulled out. I'm totally thrilled with the overall performance of this skimmer and will surely recommend it to my fellow SW tankers.

Pros: Very few microbubbles once it breaks in, which is not something you can say for its competitors (AquaC, etc). Skimmate is dark and the overall skimmer design is compact. It's actually QUIET!!
Cons: Built of incredibly cheap plastic. As others have said the covers will fall off if you're not careful. My air tubing elbow keeps clogging with calcium buildup. Needs regular cleaning and adjustment to keep working.
After a year of ownership, I would recommend this skimmer in this price range. The AquaC Remora will give you more consistent foam production, but it comes with the price of significant microbubble accumulation and noise. I got sick of having to clean and adjust the Tunze every week so I will probably try the Hydor SlimSkim next.
You just cant win with these skimmers! I wish you could get the simplicity and build quality of the AquaC with the quietness and excellent foam production without microbubbles of the Tunze. It's a decent product overall.
