Why does BRS recommend this?

Tunze Controllable pumps have been around for years and year with a great reputation.  Tunze now includes a controller with all their controllable powerheads which greatly increases their value. The Turbelle pumps are very quiet, and for everything you get the price is hard to beat.

INCLUDES CONTROLLER

German-made Tunze powerheads are the best high flow powerheads available. They are smaller and can be hidden in the aquarium easier than competing brands. Tunze pumps can be configured in a wide range of positions to target any area of the tank.

  • For aquariums from 50 to 525 gallons
  • Controllable* flow rate: 700 to 3,400 GPH
  • Energy consumption: Maximum of 35W
  • Voltage/frequency: 100-240V/50-60Hz
  • Cable length: 196.8”
  • Diameter: 3.5”
  • Output diameter 1.96”
  • Ma. tank thickness: 1/2" (15mm)

Tunze pumps are excellent high flow powerheads for a number of reasons

  • They are the smallest pumps available and easy to hide.
  • They rotate to a wide range of angles for targeted flow.
  • They consume less power.
  • Available accessories such as the Tunze Rock and Controllers make them even more user-friendly.
  • Excellent warranty and customer service.

High flow is very important to maintaining a thriving healthy aquarium. Aquariums with poor flow can experience a number of easily avoidable health issue. Using high flow powerheads in your aquarium will:

  • Significantly decrease the risk of algae outbreaks.
  • Keep waste and particles suspended longer so skimmers and filters have a better chance of removing them.
  • Prevent toxic pockets from forming in hard to reach areas.
  • Keep debris from collecting on corals.
  • Keep food suspended longer so you can add less food.
  • Increase the chances of long term healthy tank success.

Product Questions

Question #1: Should the return pump flow be included in the computation of circulation flow volume and turbulence for a reef aquarium?

Question #2: If the answer to Question #1 is 'yes, then a 235 gph return pump on a BioCube 14 (with 10 gallons of water volume total) should be adequate to maintain healthy soft corals and LPS corals correct?

Question #3: If a reefer wanted to provide more variable flow in a BioCube 14 than can be provided by the 235 gph return pump, what hardware would you recommend specifically to do the job for soft corals and LPS corals? (given that quiet operation is a very high priority).

Many thanks to BRS for providing such great technical support to the reefing community!
Question by: Richard on Apr 20, 2016, 1:22 PM
Great question!
We do not typically include the return pump flow into the powerhead unless the flow is above 10x. Your bio-cube 14 would have enough flow for soft low flow corals however with higher flow corals you would need supplement to change up the flow. We recommend a small DC pump such as the Ecotech Vortech MP10 or the Tunze DC pumps under 250 GPH rating.

I am in the process of gathering items needed to start a 100 gallon tank, and I wanted to know if the stream 6105, combined with the nanostream 6095 would create enough flow? Also I plan on using a Neptune apex in the future, would I be able to control both of these pump simultaneously with that controller? If so can I purchase either the 6105, or the 6095 without the included controller? Would I be able to control both pumps with one of the included controllers in the time that I will be waiting to upgrade to a Neptune system? What hardware associated with these two pumps would I need to be aware of while weighing the pros and cons, as well as considering the budget?
Question by: Justin on Apr 11, 2016, 3:08 PM
Great question!
The 6105 and the 6095 paired together in the tank would certainly create plenty of flow even for an SPS dominant tank. Both of these can be controlled in the future with the Apex You will need the tunze controller to work with the apex cable and they are not available without the Tunze controller attached. As for hardware you will only need the Tunze to apex link cable in the future. Feel free to let us know if you have any further questions!

With the 6095 or the 6105 Tunze powerheads which controller gives me more control, tunzes or apex?
Question by: John on Apr 15, 2014, 4:42 PM
Technically the Apex gives you the ability to customize the pumps in basically any way, however it is a very manual and fairly time consuming process compared to the Tunze controllers which would cover the majority of situations folks are looking for but only takes minutes to configure. Really just depends on what you prefer for your situation.

Which tunze powerhead or heads would you recommend for a mixed reef 150 gallon (4.'x2.'x30.") tank with mostly lps corals.

Hi John,
With the LPS corals I am partial to the 6095, its wide flow pattern is pretty easy on the LPS and 2 of them should be pretty good for a tank your size!

Best location to place powerheads.
Question by: james on Mar 21, 2014, 5:01 PM
Hi James,
It really depends on the tank and the aquascape, but the usual method would be to put them on opposite ends of the tank pointing towards the middle/front of the tank. Ideally the streams from each intersect to create a more random flow pattern.
