Filter media fulfill various tasks. On the one hand, they trap dirt and suspended particles; on the other hand, they ensure the biological conversion or chemical change of the water.
We therefore distinguish between four different basic types: mechanical, biological, adsorptive, and chemical filter media. Optimum water treatment always depends on the use of the right media and their correct combination of layers.
- Adsorptive activated carbon collects dissolved pollutants,
- Mechanical material filters out solid particles,
- Biological media promote the colonisation of useful bacteria,
- Peat has a chemical influence on the pH value and water hardness.
