Aquarium Filters (Canister, Inline, Internal, Undergravel, Power and Wet/Dry Filter)
Filters are used to process waste and impurities to maintain pristine water quality and keep your tank inhabitants healthy. There are numerous filter types, each a little different and used in different applications. A quick lesson in aquarium filters will teach you the basics and help you make a more educated purchase.
Internal filters sit inside the tank. These types of filters include air-driven sponge filters (great for quarantine aquariums), submersible power filters and undergravel filters (UGF). While not widely used in saltwater aquariums, these types of filters can be very useful in quarantine tanks, freshwater tanks, temporary holding tanks and reptile/amphibian setups.
Power filters are easy-to-use hang-on filters that sit on the rim of your aquarium. Water is drawn into the filter, flows through the filter media and then overflows back into the aquarium. These filters are easy to set up, maintain and are reasonably priced. They are excellent choices for freshwater, saltwater and some reptile/amphibian set ups.
Canister filters and inline filters have a much larger capacity than internal and power filters. Water is siphoned from the aquarium down into the canister filter. Once the water travels through the filter media, it is pumped back up into the tank. These filters have the highest capacity for holding filter media and are thus very efficient and effective. Canister filters may be used in freshwater, saltwater and some reptile/amphibian applications.
Wet/dry filters mix air with water, as the water trickles over an exposed filter media. Biological filtration and gas exchange occur as the water flows over the media surface. The rapid oxidation of ammonia and nitrite makes these filters extremely efficient; they are an outstanding choice for freshwater and saltwater aquariums.
