250 Watt 14000K Metal Halide Bulb - Ushio, Double Ended Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

250W 14000K METAL HALIDE DOUBLE ENDED BULB—USHIO

Ushio double-ended 14000K metal halide bulb offers excellent coloration and good intensity. It is crisp-white with a blue tint. It brings out the fluorescent pigments in corals nicely. Fluorescent supplementation is usually not necessary, but can be used for added intensity and to simulate dawn and dusk. An electronic ballast, magnetic pulse-start ballast or magnetic HQI ballast is required to ignite this bulb. It must also be housed inside a pendant. It cannot be used with simply a reflector in an open application as UV rays emitted by the bulb must first be filtered with a UV-proof lens. An excellent choice for reef tanks 22"–30" deep. on how the different Kelvin ratings appear and more information on metal halide bulbs.

Common questions/problems concerning metal halide lamps:
  1. Metal halide lamps of the same kind are different colors?
Metal halide lamps operate by passing an electric arc through an arc tube that excites particles in the arc tube. When the metal particles reach an excited state they emit energy in the form of visible light. It takes 100 hours of operation before the metal particles stabilize and become a consistent color. All metal halides require 100 hours of operation before color and light output stabilize. All metal halides inherently have a slight color variation between individual lamps.
  2. The metal halide lamp fires and then either burns dull or the arc extinguishes?
Usually the ballast and lamp are not receiving enough power. Metal halides pull a high current. Usually the problem is either there is too great a load on the circuit or the extension cords are of a small wire size and can`t handle the power needed by the ballast. Use only heavy duty extension cords and try running a ballast off a circuit from another part of the house.
  3. Do I need a cover shield between the lamp and the aquarium?
Metal halide lamps produce a large amount of UV and also have a potential of exploding. The single ended metal halide lamps have an outer jacket which eliminates most of the UV. However, they have an inherent risk of exploding and UL requires metal halide lamps to be enclosed. On double ended lamps there is no UV shield. Double ended lamps must have a glass shield or major eye injuries including blindness may occur.
  4. Can I operate a ballast and lamp together which are designed for different wattages?
Each wattage lamp and ballast are designed together for optimal performance and safety. If you over drive the lamp it may explode and shorten the life of the ballast and lamps. If you under drive the lamp it will also shorten the life of both components and also may explode. Do not mix different type wattages of lamps and ballasts.
NOTE: Double ended bulbs should always be used with the UV shield (supplied with most pendants). You and your corals can suffer from excess UV radiation otherwise. The bulb should be handled carefully as well since it has no outer glass casing. Using soft gloves is a good idea to keep finger prints off bulb. This is during installation and replacement.

Comments: I bought two bulbs. One of them worked fine. The other glowed very weakly when I turned the lights on. I reinstalled the poor bulb and it wouldn't go on at all. There were burn marks on the bad bulb after it glowed weakly. I carefully followed the installation intructions and used gloves. Now for $100+ I have 1 light nice bulb and one paperweight. Sigh...

Comments: I have used the Hamilton Technologies or Current 14k hqi bulbs in the past and they provided a nice white/light blue color. I decided to try this Ushio bulb because of the great reviews and the retailer does not sell the other two brands.I installed the lamp last week and I noticed that my corals and my clam have responded very well to this lamp. I noticed that my zoos and other corals are showing better expansion. I'm not sure if this is due to the new lamp or just the spectrum that it emits. I'm not so happy with the color of this lamp. This 14k lamp has the color of the 10k bulb that I have in another tank. It appears that this lamp has far too much of the yellow in it.

Comments: After researching bulbs to replace my two AQ 250 watts that came with Aqua Medic Ocean Light these seemed to be a logical choice. I am very pleased with the decision. These bulbs are far superior while costing less then the OE bulbs. The bulbs are producing incredible results. The color of the bulbs is a crisp white with blue undertones, not yellow at all. These are by far the brightest halides out there! If you keep corals with high light requirements and like a more natural look these are the bulbs for you.

Comments: Just put the bulb in my fixture yesterday. So far so good, but they say it takes up to 2 weeks for the bulb to "burn-in".

Ushio 250W DE MH

Comments: Color: Consistently as advertised across all of the Ushio brand bulbs I have used over the years. Price: Unbeatable! Longevity: I have been replacing my DE bulbs every 12-18 months without a noticable change in color, though a change in intensity is noticed and expected when replacing an older bulb with a new one. To avoid shocking your tank's inhabitants, just acclimate the system by increasing the photoperiod over the course of a week when the new buld is installed (beginning with 4-6 hours of light and adding on an hour or so per day). All in all, great bang for your buck. I will continue to purchase these bulbs for my own tanks and recommend them to others.

Comments: Installed the 14000K Ushio DE two weeks ago the and very pleased. Great output and nice midrange in between the 10K & 20K. This is used along with 2-65W 50/50 compacts about 12" above a 50 gal. Hexagon. Corals are lovin it.
