American Marine Pinpoint Aquarium Supplies
American Marine was founded in 1989 by a devoted aquaculturist who was passionate about quality and precision. Back in the late 80s, critical water quality parameters were mostly tested with colorimetric test kits. Some digital instruments were borrowed from university or laboratory sources with mixed results but always a high price tag. Expensive European aquarium equipment was always a disappointment when it finally arrived. Inexpensive "pens" gave no better results than color test kits and prematurely failed even when testing for approximate readings.
Using the most current technology and design, American Marine introduced Pinpoint Monitors, which have become the most respected line of digital instruments in the aquaculture business. American Marine was the first to introduce a 2-year warranty on each and every monitor. For every purpose, from a goldfish bowl to a salmon hatchery, Pinpoint Monitors are called into duty every day because of their rugged design, precise readings and reasonable cost. American Marine has sold Pinpoint Monitors on every continent. Each monitor is powered by a standard 9 volt battery that is available worldwide.
Warranty
1 Year manufacturer warranty. No warranty on probes.

Once you have it setup it appears to read very well. The key is to have the probe submersed totally in solution, and to leave at least one minute or two. The calibration solution is not enough to submerse the probe totally in a "normal" cup, so you need to find a small enough one in order to calibrate it properly.
I would have rated this an additonal star if more calibration solution was provided to make initial calibration an easier task.
Once calibrated, important to make "extra" calibartion solution to have enough on hand.

I breed clownfish and in my small 2-3 gal tanks it's so easy for the salinity to change dramatically in a short period of time. With my AMP Salinity Monitor I'm able to quickly check the salinity accurately in all of my tanks and maintain the salinity I want. This is an excellent product. Buy one and you'll see what I mean!

I like this monitor. It's very accurate and easy to set up. The problem is that the battery died after ONE WEEK. I need to contact American Marine to see if this monitor is designed for CONSTANT monitoring. Otherwise - it's a great addition!

This product seems to work well and has accurately read my salinity. This product was not properly calibrated when it arrived but was easy enough to fix. I do love not having to go through all of the steps that I used to have to do with my refractometer or hydrometer.

Sometimes it is worth paying the big bucks for the accuracy and the convenience. This is one of those times. I'm very glad that I bought this salinity monitor. It is easy to use and allows for constant monitoring. It is idiot proof and I love it.

This is a great piece of equipment that has made water changes and regular monitoring of salinity much easier than using a refractometer. Readings are quick and accurate.

This is my second Pinpoint monitor (I also have the PH monitor). I have found these meters much easier to use for critical readings than chemical "count the drops" measurements, or trying to determine when the solution turns a "clear blue". This monitor is easy to calibrate, and can be readily used. Two small quibbles, first, the unit is susceptible to EMI, such as that generated by my PO flourescents, so keep the meter away from the lights and their ballasts. Secondly, the instructions aren't as clean on whether or not you can leave the probe permanently in the water. Other than that, it's a worthwhile purchase when salinity (specific gravity) is an important factor in your aquarium.

When I puchased this product I was going for something that would instantly be able to provide me with a specific gravity and temperature of my tank, but this does neither, so I'm not sure if it's even temperature corrected. This gives you the measurement in salinity of ppm or something like that, with a card to translate to the specific gravity, but if you lose the card, you lose out. I bought an $8 manual one that actually tells me what the specific gravity is, and it seems more accurate than this. The calibration liquid that is given with the product is hardly enough to submerse the probe into for an accurate calibration. I doubt that this meter was ever really accurate. It has no directions for calibration, but 2 rheostats are inside the battery compartment that you can tweak and hope that something happens. Nothing really happened for me. When I tried to calibrate it would put the measurement at whatever zero value I calibrated when I tried a different solution.
I gave the product a three because it is a good monitor that will tell you if there is any change in the salinity of your tank, but the question you will always have to ask your self is, is it just the meter fluctuating, or is it an actual change. I wouldn't recommend for accuracy, but for an indicator of change.
