I purchased two (2) Current USA SubCurrent Internal Filters w/ Pumps to skim and filter the surface of my aquarium. I have one mounted at each end of the tank and I am happy to report no surface film issues. The adjustable discharge arms eliminated the dead spots in the circulation within the tank. An additional bonus is that the fish spend hours “dancing” in front of the gentle current it creates. This device was reasonably priced and multi functional; definitely a win/win.

I'm using this on a 20 gallon mantis shrimp tank.
This filter has a good design and is fairly compact for what it does. You can remove or shorten the loc-line on the base to get your desired water flow as well. The filtration in it is nice and it pulls tons of gunk off of the waters surface.
The only con I have with this system is it's extreme sensitivity to water level. If the water level in the tank drops too low, it starts sucking in air and aggressively aerates the water to the point where you think the fish might actually sink. If the water level is too high, the surface gunk will enter through the teeth on one side, swirl around, and then exit through the teeth back into the tank. Once you find that sweet spot though, it's lights out for anything on the surface of the water.
My best advice would be to use this in conjunction with a religious top-off schedule or an Auto topoff system. For the price of this unit though, you can't beat it.

Works fine in 10 gallon tank my son converted to a reef tank. No other way to skim the surface without something like this. there are similar types but they cost 3 times as much. One warning, if positioned too high in tank or water level in tank gets too low pump will start sucking air. Does so much sooner than you would think due to the powerful pump. Just raise water level to fix. It is nice that pump can be throttled even though you have to take the whole apparatus apart to do so.
I would suggest this product to anyone with a small tank without a traditional overflow.

i purchased one of these becasue i wanted extra filtration and more flow in my 16g reef and it does exactly what i expected it to. after one year i can say that the only problem/complaint i have is that the sucction cups were a little too small and gave out after about 9 months which wasn't a big deal because it came with some spares in the box. other than that just clean the filter pad regularly so the debris doesn't restrict the water flow or you will get bubbles. the filter is very quiet especially compared to most of the hang on back filters and well worth the price. if i had to i would buy it again.

I use this in my 29 gallon for extra filtration. I have had it now for 6 months. It's not a skimmer by any means but it does create good water flow. I removed the original bags of carbon, bio balls and filter media and replaced them with a mini bag of BioChem Zorb and a 100 micron filter pad cut to size. This makes the micro bubbles for me a non issue. If the water level drops too low or you move the filter is the only time I get any micro bubbles. If I do I unplug it and allow the air to escape and plug it back in and I am good to go. I was worried about the size of the suction cups and the weight of the filter but so far at 6 months they are still holding OK. I had a hard time getting the filter unstuck from the glass for it's 6 month cleaning. I would imagine if I moved it very often they would wear out quickly. So far those suction cups are my only concern. For about the price of a powerhead I am happy with this filter but if you are looking for a cheap skimmer buy a cheap skimmer instead..

I don't mind the internal filter. I know that it is not a protein skimmer by any means but it does keep my surface water cleaner. I will say that it is pretty specific about the water level. any drop to water level cause an increase of oxygen to be pushed out in the tank. In the end I think it would be better to just splurge for the protein skimmer

I bought this a few weeks ago and am running it on my 14 gal FOWLR, eventually to be nano reef. I bought this unit because I wanted some particulate filtration, and the potential for water movement offered by the loc line.
I don't use the bio balls, or the carbon filter. At the moment I'm running the skimmer with a wad of particulate media with an oceanic nano skimmer hung on the edge of the surface skimmer.
In combination the surface skimmer and the protein skimmer have my water crystal clear for under $70. I would recommend this unit to anyone with a small area in which to work, who is looking for options in directing water flow
You have to make sure to have the skimmer sufficiently submerged, or it'll suck air and create micro bubbles. Also, if the water level drops, it can become buoyant and detach from the side of the tank -- this hasn't happened often though.

It is dead silent. I would wash out the filter or else your skimmer will go nuts.

This filter is the best value for the money, put one in may 25gal high sea horse tank runs super quiet and skims the surface great. the only draw back is ther is know flow adjustment, but the loc lines help great for positioning an defussing the flow.
