I called and talked with a representative when planning out a new heavily stocked Mbuna tank of 75 gallons. I was thinking about a sump but he recommended Hydor canisters and to get at least the 450. I ordered the 450 and liked the design and how fast I could clean and get back into service. I decided to put the 450 on my 55 gallon tank. I put a 250 on a 29 gallon tank. Then I ordered the 600 for my 75. The flow seems perfect for each tank with the rock piles I have creating areas of swift current and areas of slow current. Ball valves shut-off drip tight and all I need to do is wrap a towel around them, close the valves, undo the pipes, then pull the whole filter out for cleaning. The towel catches the little leakage between the valve and filter housing so nothing gets wet under my tank. The media is easy to put in and take out and the motor/lid snaps firmly in place and clamps down on all four sides. The manual primer button on the top is a nice feature to help get all the suction tubing primed. I have found it helpful to fill the filter with water before putting back into service. I did add a second fine filter wool to the 450. You can also add bags of carbon or similar if needed. I added the Hydor inline heaters also to each tank. Love getting as much as possible out of the tank itself. So far I love them. Nice design, decent build quality, virtually silent, several options for return flow configurations. Time will tell regarding motor life.

The Hydor 150 is the bottom line of their filters. You should read the directions carefully. For the 150 ONLY the water flows to the bottom of the filter container and then up through the media. The larger Hydor filters work in the opposite direction. Therefore, the material provided must be loaded in reverse order from what normal logic dictates. Loading from the top down, the sponge, filter material, carbon, and bio-material. Note that no activated carbon is provided for this unit and it is a smaller powered filter with two trays. It is quiet and it does work fine. The quick disconnects are nice. The intake and out-take u-tubes are a little weak (thin plastic) and the out-take tube does not have an extension to ensure that the outlet is below the water line on larger aquariums. Perhaps an extension can be purchased. I use it to run some carbon in a 100 gallon saltwater tank to remove toxins from stony corals and some nutrients. I would say this unit is fine for a 30 gallon aquarium but I would go up in filter sizes for 55 gallon and larger aquariums unless you just want to run some carbon occasionally which is what I am doing.

Very low quality material used to make this product.
Very thin walls on all material, baskets very light weight, clip for motor head thin and weak, power cord very thin gauge and short. It does run good but expect a short life with this product. 20 years experience.

After fighting with an over the edge in-tank filter this has been a huge upgrade. The water is significantly clearer and the unit is very easy to install, prime and operate.
