Description:
Kent Marine Phosphate Sponge is not an algaecide, but a ceramic medium which will adsorb phosphates quickly (within hours) when placed directly in the water flow. Works in fresh and saltwater aquariums or ponds to bring about 1.0 ppm of phosphate or silicates down to less than .05 ppm in a 120 gallon tank for every dry quart of medium. For silicate to be removed, phosphates must first be removed. Beads are cracked to expose more surface area and increase efficiency! This product will not release soluble aluminum compounds into your aquarium, causing negative reactions from your inverts, as competing products may. Will also absorb moisture for use as an air dryer for ozone, and can be renewed over and over in moisture removal service!
Directions:
Rinse with fresh water (preferably reverse osmosis or deionized water) WARNING: PRODUCT MAY GET VERY HOT THE FIRST TIME IT IS WET! Use rubber gloves and/or place in a plastic container while rinsing! Place in a large mesh bag (800 micron) or a canister filter, directly in the water flow. Make sure water flows through the material and not just around it. Leave for 8 hours to 2 days maximum (as with any phosphate adsorber, phosphates can be re-released into the system if initial charge is left in the system continuously. If you want to leave in the system to keep phosphates low or to remove silicates, replace initial charge with brand new, and change on a regular basis.) For silicate removal, phosphate must first be removed, then a new charge of Phosphate Sponge must be left in the system for several days.
Considerations for use:
Many municipal water companies add phosphates to the tap water to assist in controlling lead consumption by humans. Sodium Silicate (water glass) is also added to help reduce pipe corrosion. Phosphates and silicates also naturally occur in rivers and lakes. Phosphates and silicates are nutrients or fertilizers which, given proper lighting and other nutrients, will promote rapid growth of undesirable algae, diatoms and cyanobacteria. When used as directed, Phosphate Sponge will lower the levels of these fertilizers to help reduce growth of these unsightly nuisances. Successive replacement of charges of Phosphate Sponge may encourage a die off of hair algae!
Renewal:
For phosphate removal, renewal may or may not be possible, depending on conditions of use. At best, product may be renewed two times, depending on circumstances of use, and capacity will be much lower each time. To renew, spread 1/4" thick on a baking pan. Place in a 450 degree oven for one hour. Let cool. Rinse with fresh water and re-use. When reusing, leave for 8 hours, maximum. Do not use pan for food.
Precautions:
WARNING: PRODUCT MAY GET VERY HOT THE FIRST TIME IT IS WET! Use rubber gloves and/or place in a plastic container while rinsing!

Have a 120 gallon reef tank that had .25 ppm phosphate reading using API's test kit. Put the product in an 800 micron bag in my sump, right after the filter sock on the intake, left it in for 24 hours, reading the next day was about .05 ppm on phosphates. I have a feeling this would work even better in a reactor, but it did it's job just in the media bag. One note though, I rinsed this thing for a while in some RO water, it still clouded up my tank for a few hours, not that big of a deal but worth noting.

I have NEVER had a product work as stated before. This phosphate sponge is AMAZING!!! After 8hrs of tumbling in my reactor my green hair algae started turning white. I swapped the first batch out after 13hrs and added a second batch that ran over night. The next morning ALL GHA was DEAD!!! I did a 10G WC and the tank has never looked so clean, I mean CRYSTAL CLEAR. This product is shockingly amazing and I will continue to use as needed. Please keep in mind that it needs to be rinsed VERY VERY well before adding to the tank. Even with a heavy rinse I still found that it made my tank cloudy. But nothing some filter floss and a water change didn't clear up. I also would like to mention that I saw no negative effects on corals or live stock while using this product, which is always a plus. A+++ for a great product.

Left in overnight, and worked great! It can be recharged, with reduced efficienty a few times, so is a great product for the price.

I got my phospate media last week I followed the directions and I removed it in 24hrs to make sure the phosphate's didn't leach back into the tank.It worked great, it removed 3/4 of the phospate in my tank, I had out of control phosphate levels and now they are undercontrol after the second dosing. just make sure you follow the directions or it won't work. Thanks for the great customer service

This is a great product and works wonders. Just make sure to follow the instructions and remove it from your system within 8-48 hours, or it won't do much good. When I first used it on my 75g reef, my phosphates were at 1ppm. I forgot to take it out and didn't get it out for about 5 days, and no change in phosphate levels. So I did it again, and made sure to pull it out 24 hours later, and wallah, 0ppm. So, end result was from 1ppm to 0ppm in 24 hours with this stuff. Works great, just don't forget to pull it out during the recommended period.
