1" SQWD
by
JACK UNDERWOOD
Experience Level: Expert
Posted on 11/1/2009 from LOS ALTOS, CA UNITED STATES
Comments:
This larger SQWD replaces the 3/4" which wore out due to high flow rates of about 1400gph. I reduced the new 1" down to 3/4" hose, so I would not need to replumb the tank (150 gal. reef). As with the smaller SQWD, totally silent operation, but with a slower cycling rate of about 90 seconds, providing a thorough, natural water movement in the tank. I like the removable cap feature on the larger unit, which makes servicing it an option.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

water movement

I installed the 1" squid into the return line from the sump. I have a 1300gpm high-pressure pump with 3/4 inch tubing up to the main tank. The lines split evenly to each side that power two adjustable nozzle heads at each side of the 150 gal tank. The water movement increased dramatically. This product works and is made very well.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

1" SCWD Wavemaker

Comments:
I have now had the 1" SCWD wave maker in constant 24 HR service since March 5th. One month later I have had no leaks, or issues of any kind and I LOVE how well this unit runs. It has 1" FPT threads which I used with my rigid 1" closed loop system. I was expecting the standard 1" MPT threading but it doesn't really matter as the unit works great. The current it produces gently swaps back and fourth with some time in the middle where both ports are partially open. The re-design to handle more flow and switch output ports more slowly was great. My corals, Fish, Clams and everything is super happy with the current this unit produces. I was happy with the 3/4" unit I had on my 90, but I am Delighted with the preformance of the 1" in my 75.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

These things are very simple in concept, and it's great not to have to put more powerheads in the tank to provide some measure of water flow. It was difficult however to mount and plumb this thing in a tight space (like my overflow), without putting pressure on the bulkhead to the sump; I ended up plumbing mine outside the back of the tank with two over-hanging outlets. Overall, however, this is working fine. I haven't used it enough yet to need a cleaning or experience issues.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Have three of these installed for several months and the fish love them. Creates a very good wave action below the surface and the fish will get in the current and ride.

Good Idea

Comments:
I have only been running this for 2 days with an Eheim 1262. First thing I noticed was the rattling noises it makes. Second thing I noticed was how the flow rate is significantly reduced when using the SCWD just as the manufacturer described, which wasn't a big deal being that now I am directing almost 100% of the flow to only one side at a time. I wish I was able to open it up to clean it, if it ever will need to be cleaned. I was not excited after reading all the reviews on this product here on Marine Depot but I went ahead and took a chance, unfortuneately it is to early to determine if it is just ok or great.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

I received first one and gears were damaged inside drive mechanism. Received replacement from Marine depot and installed with Mak 4pump (1190 gph.) I estimate a drop to 900 gal/hr. Switches every 1.25 mins. This is in a closed loop separate from return pumps. Removed 2 of my maxi jet 1200's. Simple tubing with 1 inch FPT. Rated for 500 - 3500 GPH pump. Might have to update pump. Teflon tape,,Hint Hint..

I have owned 4 scwd's great idea bad design, when you buy don't plan on it lasting much over a year. Because the unit is sealed internally so once the water switching parts wear it's junk.

While I've heard complaints about the fact that this unit uses tubing and can't be hard plumbed, it makes installation on an existing system much easier. The product works as advertised, adjusting water flow does increase/decrease the switching. Considering the price of other 'wavemakers' and switching devices, this seems to be a great alternative. Presently I have the SCWD running from my main return pump, but I can see it being most effective in a closed system application, it will be very effective moving small particle foods through the tank.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Not a good idea for large reef
by
RYAN
Comments:
If you try to get a lot of flow from this, it rattles and switches quickly. Says it accept 3/4" hose, but inlet size is just over 1/4". Seems like it works better with lower flow.

Very simple and effective design- other than the "one size fits all" aspect. Models with 1-1.5" inlet/outlets would make things easier for applications using larger pumps. Nonetheless four stars.
