This Pre-skimmer basket is a joke. It does nothing but take up more room in the tank. It doesnt skim hardly nothing off the top most just pass it by and it is still letting micro bubbles in my tank. I am going to sell everything and get something different than AquaC Remora it just sucks all the way around......
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

The thing is very large and more or less useless. It's like hiding an elephant (the Maxi-jet) in a warehouse. Has a very strange way of mounting on the Maxi that isn't too secure. My advice, save you money and try the skimmer without it first. I removed it after 1 month.

This skimmer box installed in about 2 minutes but took me a few days to get the height adjusted properly in order to prevent the pump from running dry. You'll have to play with this box height for a while and be vigilant with keeping the water level topped off, else the box/motor will run dry. Once adjusted, it works very well.

I just put this in last week and it works great. As stated in the previous reviews, you will have to modify it a little. I just used a dremel and made a few of the openings above the pump longer. I only did this to two slots on each side, though. So far I haven't had any problems since I made the modifications. It is great for removing the microbubbles and for skimming the top of the water.

The best option for sumpless

Comments:
As soon as I started feeding frozen foods in my tank I started to get scum on the water surface, even with powerheads breaking it up in spots. So to avoid having to instal a sump with with a siphon overflow box (I don't like that idea because I have downstairs neihbors) I installed this product. So far this has worked as advertised, evectively removing the surface skum. The surface isn't perfect now but 90% better I would say. Unlike other reviewers I do feel the box attaches firmly (just tighten those clamps!) but because of the fixed design I feel this is a dangerous product because of how easy it is to have the water level drop due to overskimming or evaporation (it sucked air when I slept in saturday due to evaperation). To resolve this I ordered an auto top off...nice to have anyways but I would say if you have an open top tank with this box I would consiter an ato device a nessesity. Also the box restricts flow. Ok so far...I just lowered the skimmer chamber but am consitering cutting slats in the maxijet intake stem to resolve this which might render it unuasable with the filter attachement in the future. On last commment...the device looks great in the aquarium...very clean...though my comprimise to that will be the ato sensors that will be installed shorty. Still a great buy for an overflow-less tank...a lifesaver in some ways as I found the surface scum intolerable...
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

The pre-skimmer is definitely a good addition to the AquaC Remora. At first, it takes a little patience getting the box to stay in place under the skimmer; but once the box is settled, it skims the surface much more efficiently (than if you just had the skimmer without the pre-skimmer). I hope this helps.

Works great!! I'm using this with the large CPR Aquafuge2 on a 30g tank. It takes up precious room in a 30g tank, but it sure works great. Any oil slick on the surface of the water after feeding time will immediately be sucked in through the intake grates. Skimmer activity is way up. You just have to keep an eye on it. Water evaporation lowers the level of my tank and then the powerhead sucks air. I must top off twice daily with such a small tank and high evaporation in a dry climate. But the benefit is a much cleaner tank.

Product is a great idea but needs refinement. It is functional and does what it was designed to do but because the pump is only mounted via a flexible hose, as an assembly, it's loose. It was also necessary to remove the strainer from the intake which makes it very possible to block the intake. It wouldn't take much to make this product install securely and insure ample room for the intake. The skimmer is 'THE BEST'!

Does a great job of skimming oraganics of the top of the water and producing darker foam. It is quite large however, and I had to modify it because it was hitting my waterfall filter that is hanging on the back of my tank next to the skimmer. Helps out with micro bubbles quite well too.

good system, but I don't like how it fastens to the pump, if your water level goes down too much, it could run dry. I am going to glue foam to the inside at the level I want the surface skimmer so it will be at the current water level. Otherwise I like the system.

This unit is not the best design at all. I get lots of bubbles through the trap, and the over flow leaves a lot to be desired. Hard to set up effectively, so will try some mods to keep it. I do get decent skimmate from the skimmer but I have no idea if this unit makes it better or not.

Poor design

Comments:
Holds on to the pump only via two thumbscrews, it cannot be stated enough how poor this is. Maxijet pumps only have a small flat area so theres not much room to work. Maxijet is then so close to the middle divider that it reduces pump intake lowering skimmer performance, and can cause a suction to occur preventing any intake at all. Maxijet also cannot have the filter end on its intake with this unit due to lack of space. Unit overall is very poorly designed, and does not seem like it was really made for the maxijet 1200 in the first place. Water level becomes a problem; too little will cause the pump to run dry. Drill a hole in the side or bottom to prevent this (and reduce surface skimming). On the plus side, it reduces microbubbles to near zero and gives you space to hide things, I have two purigen bags in there. It is large but hides the pump cleanly.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

The pre-filter doea a good job of hiding the pump in my 29g. It is a bit bulky, but nevertheless proves to be an improvement on the overall visual appeal. The attachment to the pump is a bit questionable, but I have set up the live rock to help support the pre-filter. You must keep an eye out for any decrease in water level, as this will cause the pump to run dry. Overall, I am very satisfied with the performance of both the Remora, and the pre-filter. I have had this running for almost 1 week, and it has produced more skimmate than I would have imagined.

This unit seems to hinder the suction capability of the maxi-jet 1200. My skimmer was not creating any foam until I removed this. It than started to create foam almost instantly. I will try it again in about a week or so, but as of now I don't recommend this. Maybe if it was a little larger so that the pump could be turned around as to not have the intake so close to the divider it would work better.

Before I had this on my nano reef tank there was a significant film of proteins on the surface of my water. Before I had taken a tiny cup to skim the top and dump the waterright into the skimmer, but the film would return shortly. Once I get the prefilter installed and adjusted it a bit it worked great. There is no more film and my corals have opened up more. The only thing I don't like is that there is almost a sweet spot for the water level to get good overflow but not too much so the pump runs dry. If you have significant evaporation and no auto-top off system in place you should watch your tank very closely to get a feel for how much water you need to replace everyday. A great buy!

I chose this simply for concealement of the hiddeous pump. It definitely did the job, plus it did cut down immediately, and after a few days, eliminated my microbubbles. You will have to tighten it down pretty hard to keep it on the pump and have to work with it to get it level, but I felt it was worth the trouble. You also have to keep an eye on the water level, but is also worth the trouble to me. To sum up the question of "If I should buy this product?" can be answered by one question... "Do you thoroughly try to keep a sleek and modern looking display tank?" If you answered yes, you should buy it. If you are one with hoses, sumps, refugiums, bulky equipment all in the tank and scattered everywhere on the floor outside the tank in plain view.. well, you would see this product as troublesome and pointless and its probably not for you.

I was very excited to get my new pre-Skimmer for the remora... however, after a month, I still have the micro bubbles. As far as the construction of the skimmer, be prepared to concoct your own method of affixing it to your pump. I ended up drilling a hole in the plexi and using suction cups from the maxi jet to stick it to the wall. It kept falling down off the pump.... Worth the money, only becuase I can't design plastic myself, but be prepared to fool with it a bit.

Don't bother with this unit. The water might get a bit, and just a bit more clear, but you have to constantly be on the look out so the water level does not drop below the recommended or your pump will run dry and burn. I have to top water off every single day, no matter how little. Another thing, the unit doesn't really get rid of bubbles, there comes a point where the output area floods. Plus, it takes a lot of space inside the tank. Wast of money.

I went from the popular Seaclone skimmer into the AquaC Remora. The difference between the two is amazing. The AquaC out performs the seaclone 4 to 1 in the production of product skimmed. It started producing foam as soon as I plugged it in. It also has a height adjustable collection cup so you can vary the concentration of skimmed product. It is a fairly quiet unit with plug and play features. Very easy set-up. I would deffinetly recommend you spend the extra money over the cheaper skimmers. You get what you pay for.

It works quite nicely with the Remora skimmer. It really pulls junk from the top of the aquarium very well. My water surface is much clearer now that it was before. This skimmer is great! I installed it a few days ago and it immediately started working. When you first install it you will notice a large amount of microbubbles and it is a bit loud. After a day the microbubbles were nearly gone and it was very quite. The amount of froth this product makes is unbelieveable. The only skimmer i will ever buy again. Blows the rest out of the water! Also i did buy the pre filter but did not use it because it was very bulky in my tank. Hides the pump but makes the skimmer tilt due to the weight of it.

The spray injection skimmer works very well but the overflow box needs some design changes. The screw(s) that clamp the box onto the pump are poor. The most terrible mounting design! Pre-skimmer concept is great and it does skim the top of the water and reduces bubbles if precariously mounted, but the mounting design is the worst flimsy design I could think of. It should mount to the tank or the Remora directly AND have a method of adjusting to the water height so the pump doesn't run dry with one day's water drop (hinged float system).I would return the thing for credit if it wasn't such a hassle to get an RMA, package, and ship it. This is the problem of dealing with mail order. The AquaC Skimmer with the maxi-Jet, I bought the skimmer for, is fantastic.

Excellent skimmer, indeed! It was collecting whitish wet foam during the first week and the brownish/greenish stuff on the second week. Every animal in the tank seems to be happier! The prefilter box is a good tool. It captures organics from the water surface where concentration is the highest. But watch out for the water level at the slotted holes. If it's above the slots, it defeats the purpose of the box and if it's below the slots, the MJ1200 water pump will eventually run dry and destroy itself.

This unit solves the problem of bubbles in the tank from the skimmer. It is also a good surface skimmer. One area where it could be improved would be a different way to attach it to the pump. I managed to mount mine with the screws provided and so far it has stayed in place but IMHO it could use a better method. Also, this unit will fit best in bigger(30+ gal)tanks. Overall I am very pleased with the pre skimmer's performance.
