i got this filter for my 50 gallon freshwater planted tank. it's very quiet and i find it uses a little more carbon then other hang-on-the-back filters which is good. mine eventually broke but that was my fault because it got clogged with sand, and it started making a loud buzzing noise and eventually stopped working, but again it was my fault for stirring up the sand. so i replaced it with a whisper filter, the marineland bio had it beat in the lond run because it was just as quiet as the whisper and it has more carbon in the filters then the whisper. the only thing i didn't like about it was that it's a little bulky but that dosen't really matter.

This product is high end. Works really great and the thermostate reading is very close to the actual tank temp. Again shipped very fast.

All bio-wheels take a few days to break in fully and will make more splashing noise during this period. This is normal as the material in the wheel needs too become saturated and covered with good bacteria. Once this happens it it relatively quiet - much quieter than any of my saltwater setups. (take the noise comments with a grain of salt) Efficient, well made and designed, easy to install and maintain. Always my first choise for freshwater - I only use live rock for saltwater...

This is a great product that is well built and works very well. While it is very quiet when new, it can be a little noisy after a few months of use. I am currently using several Marineland Penguin Bio Wheel Power Filters, and overall, I am please with the price / performance ratio.

The out flow creates so many tiny bubbles the tank looks cloudy, and this is when the tank is filled all the way. Other than that it does a good job and the company who makes it sent me a free replacement propeller when I told them how noisy it was. Sure enough, the plastic propeller shaft cracked and was creating the additional noise. It still hums, but not as bad as it was. Due to the cloudy factor made from the microscopic bubbles, I would not recommend this product to a friend.

I had an Aquaclear for years, but it died and I tried a Penguin 200 with my 46 gal bowfront. The wheel wouldn't spin if the tank was down even one gallon, the motor was loud, and the tank never cleared. The PH and nitrates were way too high. Water changes didn't help. I lost all but 5 of 40 little fishies almost overnight. I went to African Cichlids who love the high PH, but the tank is still cloudy. Switched to an Aquapure 50, and the tank cleared within 24 hours, the nitrates are ok and the fish are happy! I'll keep the PH up and the Aquapure, but the landfill will get the Penguin with its sorry biowheel.

Comments:
Discus are very finicky about water quality and are heavy hi-protein eaters, especially in grow-out tanks of which I have several. What goes in must come out and this filter is very well suited to their characteristics. The bio-wheel is a must to remove ammonia and the large surface area of the very easily cleaned media is another terrific benefit. I've tried in-tank foam and cannister filters of every kind and I now have these on all of my tanks with maybe one or two in-tank foam filters to help with the ammonia. I use double the suggested filter capacity/gallon but the gentle water-fall return is fine for smaller fry which can be damaged by strong currents. Yes, it is a bit noisy and really noisy when it runs low during water changes, an annoyance. But the price/performance works for me so I'm not complaining.

This is the replacement for the Penguin 200. It is no where close to the quiet smooth operation of the original unit. The output splashes and the media filters seem to be smaller.
