Red Sea Max Starter Kit
Kit includes the following:
Reef Base (10kg/22lb)
The ideal substrate for all saltwater fish and invertebrate tanks, Reef Base consists of naturally occurring reef sand spheres mixed with aragonite coral chips, and comes prewashed and impurity-free. The spheres, highly porous calcareous shells of simple protozoa (foraminefers), provide a large surface area for bacteria colonization and serve as an excellent media for both aerobic (nitrifying) and anaerobic (denitrifying) biological filtration. While the high buffering capacity of natural aragonite, the most dissolvable form of calcium carbonate, helps to maintain natural, stable levels of pH in the aquarium.
Coral Pro Salt (7kg/210liters, 15.4lb/55gal)
An innovative new salt formula designed to meet the needs of today’s advanced hobbyist, Coral Pro Salt contains the same natural minerals as those used in Red Sea Salt but is especially formulated for use with "mineral-free" reverse osmosis (RO) or soft tap water. Coral Pro contains elevated levels of calcium and buffer capacity to provide extended availability of these elements, essential for vibrant coral growth, without the need for supplementation.
- chemically balanced formula to support corals and other delicate marine life
- natural concentration of major, minor and trace elements
- reaches a stable, natural pH shortly after mixing
- free of nitrates and phosphates
- produced by a small batch process to ensure homogeneity and consistency of salt mixture
Hydrometer with built-in thermometer
Measuring the specific gravity, or degree of salinity, in your aquarium water is a basic and important task you will need to carry out on a regular basis in order to ensure the well-being of your livestock. Red Sea’s hydrometer provides an accurate measurement of specific gravity, while the built-in digital thermometer ensures that the water being tested is at correct temperature. The patented design enables device to be permanently installed inside aquarium for continuous, real-time reading of salinity, in addition to regular periodic reading, while the bubble-proof casing allows for easy reading of results.
NitroBac bio starter (100 ml/3.4fl oz)
A mixture of five strains of nitrifying bacteria that kick-starts the nitrification process within the aquarium, NitroBac reduces cycling time for new aquariums by 60 percent.
Marine Lab (includes Alkalinity Pro, Calcium Pro and Magnesium Test)
Correct water conditions are essential for all marine animals. Performing the tests Included in the Marine Lab will assist in establishing and maintaining a successful aquarium. Marine Lab includes tests for: pH, Alkalinity, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate. Includes a 0.85 fl.oz. trial bottle of Success Buff supplement.
A stable pH is essential for the well being of all aquarium inhabitants.
Alkalinity measures the capacity of seawater to absorb the acidic waste produced by fish, without affecting the pH. Maintaining an alkalinity of 2.2 meq/l will prevent sudden fatal drops in pH.
Both pH and alkalinity should be tested regularly. Alkalinity level can be adjusted by using a buffering solution such as Success Buff.
Ammonia, which is toxic for fish, is regularly introduced into the aquarium by fish waste. An established functioning Biological Filter, which house living colonies of nitrifying bacteria, will convert the ammonia to nitrite and thereafter to nitrate, which are less harmful. Regular testing for ammonia & nitrite will provide a positive indication that your Biological Filter is functioning is in balance with the stocking level.
Invertebrates react distressfully to low levels of nitrate. High nitrate levels will stress marine fish making them susceptible to infection. Excess nitrate is removed by partial water changes with nitrate-free water. Regular testing for nitrate will guide you as to when these essential water changes should be made.
Buff—pH & alkalinity stabilizer (100ml/3.4fl oz)
Buffering capacity refers to the aquarium water’s ability to maintain a stable pH as acids, such as nitrite, are introduced to it. In an aquarium buffering substances are consumed by calcareous algae and invertebrates and by the acid waste products of fish. Success Buff is a marine pH buffering solution that contains carbonates and bicarbonates of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and boron blended to the same ratio as that found in natural seawater. Success Buff helps to maintain a high buffer capacity and a stable pH in your aquarium.
Magnesium Supplement (100 ml/3.4 fl oz)
Magnesium plays an important role in the reef aquarium. In addition to its many biological functions, it serves to prevent the excessive precipitation of calcium and bicarbonate, which lowers the calcium level and causes a drop in alkalinity. Magnesium should be maintained at approximately 3 times the level of Calcium, measured in ppm. Success Magnesium contains only natural components in a balanced composition that safely raise the Magnesium level without disturbing the anion balance of the seawater even after prolonged use. Magnesium should be supplemented in combination with weekly 10% water changes,
Calcium Supplement (100 ml/3.4 fl oz)
Ion balanced Calcium for sustained Coral Growth
In the reef aquarium, a constant high calcium level is required to promote the growth of hard corals. This element should be supplemented regularly, since it is used up quickly by the growing corals and calcareous algae.
Success Calcium will not affect the pH or alkalinity (buffer capacity) of your aquarium and small amounts will raise the calcium level considerably. This product contains only natural components in a balanced composition, which will not disturb the anion balance of the sea salt even after prolonged use. Calcium should be supplemented together with Strontium, Molybdenum & Trace in combination with weekly 10% water changes.
Coral Buff Supplement
Red Sea’s Coral buff contain a mixture of balanced carbonate substances, borates and bi-carbonates which increase the alkalinity levels and the availability of free carbonates molecules , to be consumed during skeletogenesis process without interfering with the total aquarium chemistry. By using the coral buff, you increase coral skeleton growth by preventing from the carbonates to act as the limited factor in the process, which is usually the problem in reef tanks.
Every 15 ml of coral buff will increase the alkalinity of 100 L by 0.5 meq/l 1.5° dKH.

I'm new to the aquarium hobby, but the RSM made it simple to get up and running fast. Beautiful design and everything fits together well. My only gripes would be the skimmer, the limitation on lighting choices and the poor choice of placement for the powerheads. Otherwise, a great, high-quality product!

I SAID IT IS GREAT BECAUSE THE CONCEPT IS.
I SAID TROUBLE BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN.
AFTER OWNING IT FOR 8 MONTHS NOW I'VE GONE THROUGH ,
1 BALLAST,2 SETS OF FANS AND 3 SETS OF LIGHTS.
DEALING WITH RED SEA IS LIKE PULLING TEETH .
BUT FINALLY THEY SENT REPLACEMENT PARTS BUT NOT THE BULBS
THEY CONTINUE TO IGNORE ME ON THAT PROBLEM.
SO YOU BE THE JUDGE ABOUT THIS PRODUCT.

I am very new to saltwater tanks I must say. I have had no problems AT ALL!. Follow the little booklet that comes with the tank and you should be fine. My apartment gets a little hot at times so I spread the time of the lights over 2 intervals.I now have anemones, giant clam, leathers, frogspawn, pulsing xenia, mushrooms, and other goodies!

This is a very compact and stylish aquarium that comes with a nice, solid stand and the starter kit which includes the saltwater mix, substrate and lots of other getting started items. I'm just getting started with my reef setup but so far, I have no regrets purchasing this kit. The pumps are quiet and the lack of visible cables makes this aqaurium set much better looking than my fresh-water tanks. However, some things are a little annoying, which includes access to the pumps (you can only remove them if you unbolt the aquarium hood) and the cable channel covers which don't secure tightly to the channels so they keep falling off. Other than that, I'd buy it again.

I received my new Max about two weeks ago and I love it. It was very easy to setup and I love how everything is self contained. No tubing or wires to hassle with or run under the stand to a separate treatment unit like my old aquarium. I have been keeping a saltwater aquarium now for about 8 years and my old setup was showing its age and was getting difficult to maintain.Everything you need to get this aquarium going comes with the package and I highly recommend it.

This is a great tank for a beginner. It contains everything in one piece and the manual walks you through the process of setting up a tank. I am a beginner myself and I learned many details regarding reef aquarium during the setup. I recommend to anyone with toddler or school children. Have fun!

Comments:
I have both a Finnex 20 and a JBJ 24 and the filtration system in the Red Sea Max is far better than either of them. It is not "plug and play" as stated, there is a bit of assembly required with the tank but nothing hard and even with the stand assembly should only take a few hours. Clean, closed, very nice appearance once set up. This also means because of overheating the lights that come with the tank are probably the best you can use so won't support corals with high intensity light needs and if the room temperature is more than the low 70s you will most likely need a chiller. The cabinet is designed for a chiller (1/10 HP) and the hood and filtration system has a spot for one.
