- Information about the colours, habitats and abundances of all species.
- References to taxonomic detail and regional field guides.
- Chapters on `what are species?`, evolution, biogeography, the fossil record, coral reefs, the structure of corals, reproduction and dispersal.
An extravaganza of colour and art

- A portrayal of the variety and the beauty of corals as never before.
- Over 3,300 underwater photographs taken by some of the best known underwater photographers from around the world.
- One hundred superb works of art reveal the beauty of microscopic detail.
From reefs to aquaria

- A history of discovery.
- Which comes first - the reefs or the corals?
- Corals in aquaria: a new path of discovery.
Nine hundred distribution maps
- An atlas of information and explanation.
- One hundred superb works of art reveal the beauty of microscopic detail.
What are species?
- The nature of species, how they vary according to environment and how they change geographically.
- How variation in corals creates a complex of issues for taxonomy.
Reproduction and dispersal

- The reproductive and dispersal mechanisms of corals.
- How reproduction and dispersal relates to biogeographical and evolutionary issues.
Structure

- A non-technical account of coral morphology.
- A glossary explains all terminology.
Geological history
- An account of the `big picture` of evolutionary change.
Evolution
- The mechanisms which control the origin and evolutionary change of species.

The author Dr Veron took up diving in the mid 60`s and has been working on corals ever since - work that has taken him to all the major coral reef regions of the world. He is principal author of 12 books and monographs on corals including the award winning Corals in Space and Time. Dr Veron has three higher degrees including a DSc for his work on coral taxonomy. For many years he has been Chief Scientist at the Australian Institute of Marine Science.
Corals of the World is an end product of thirty years of research. It is also very much the outcome of the author`s love of nature and was written for the use and enjoyment of all who appreciate the beauty of coral reefs and who want to know more about the organisms that build them.

The scientific editor and producer Dr Stafford-Smith has worked for 20 years on coral reefs worldwide. She specialises in eco-physiological questions and management issues and has an extensive taxonomic knowledge of corals. Through this work she expanded her expertise in information technology and developed interests in other fields, including design.
Corals of the World was created through Dr Stafford-Smith`s combined knowledge of coral taxonomy and computer technology. Like the author, it is also the outcome of a love of coral reefs and a desire to do her part for their long-term conservation.
