Great
Pinpoint Salinity Monitor by MORGAN GONIA
Experience Level: Expert
Posted on 4/21/2009 from DULUTH, MN UNITED STATES
Comments: This product seems to work well and has accurately read my salinity. This product was not properly calibrated when it arrived but was easy enough to fix. I do love not having to go through all of the steps that I used to have to do with my refractometer or hydrometer.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: Sometimes it is worth paying the big bucks for the accuracy and the convenience. This is one of those times. I'm very glad that I bought this salinity monitor. It is easy to use and allows for constant monitoring. It is idiot proof and I love it.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: This is a great piece of equipment that has made water changes and regular monitoring of salinity much easier than using a refractometer. Readings are quick and accurate.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

American Marine Pinpoint Salin by Kobayashi_Maru

Comments: This is my second Pinpoint monitor (I also have the PH monitor). I have found these meters much easier to use for critical readings than chemical "count the drops" measurements, or trying to determine when the solution turns a "clear blue". This monitor is easy to calibrate, and can be readily used. Two small quibbles, first, the unit is susceptible to EMI, such as that generated by my PO flourescents, so keep the meter away from the lights and their ballasts. Secondly, the instructions aren't as clean on whether or not you can leave the probe permanently in the water. Other than that, it's a worthwhile purchase when salinity (specific gravity) is an important factor in your aquarium.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Reality? by Bill V.

Comments: When I puchased this product I was going for something that would instantly be able to provide me with a specific gravity and temperature of my tank, but this does neither, so I'm not sure if it's even temperature corrected. This gives you the measurement in salinity of ppm or something like that, with a card to translate to the specific gravity, but if you lose the card, you lose out. I bought an $8 manual one that actually tells me what the specific gravity is, and it seems more accurate than this. The calibration liquid that is given with the product is hardly enough to submerse the probe into for an accurate calibration. I doubt that this meter was ever really accurate. It has no directions for calibration, but 2 rheostats are inside the battery compartment that you can tweak and hope that something happens. Nothing really happened for me. When I tried to calibrate it would put the measurement at whatever zero value I calibrated when I tried a different solution. I gave the product a three because it is a good monitor that will tell you if there is any change in the salinity of your tank, but the question you will always have to ask your self is, is it just the meter fluctuating, or is it an actual change. I wouldn't recommend for accuracy, but for an indicator of change.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I am very satisfied with this meter. I use it to measure my tank quickly and easily. Very helpful when mixing new water for water changes. Make sure to use a fresh 9V battery often to prevent erroneous measurements due to low battery conditions.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Need more info! by JOHN MCDEVITT

Comments: Would recommend this product. Directions were not clear as to the probe. Can you leave it in the reef tank all the time or do you need to remove and clean after each use? So far so good for the price point. I would recommend you folks.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Unsatisfactory
Useless for me. . . by CHUCK
Experience Level: Expert
Posted on 7/13/2007 from STUDIO CITY, CA UNITED STATES
Comments: Electrical interference (caused by proximity of electrical devices and/or power cords) means that the system would not work for ANY area of my system -- main reef, sump, or refugium. At the time I was kind of tweaked about this, because when I spoke with pinpoint they were well aware of the problem, but offered no help or fix. Re-calibration is also an issue. The previous reviewer got it right; order a Marine Depot refractometer to save yourself a lot of headache. It's cheap and reliable -- this product is neither.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Great
An alright product... by LobsterOfJustice
Comments: It can easily recieve inference from ballasts, etc. Myself and others have experienced different readings in the sump and display. Save money and get a refractometer if you have multiple tanks.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Great
Almost Perfect by Maryland Aquarist
Comments: This meter is very prone to electrical interference from other equipment when plugged into house current using the optional AC Adaptor Kit. Stick with using the 9V battery. Satisfied otherwise.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Unsatisfactory
Not Recommended by DW62
Comments: Thought my first one was defective since it always registered different readings each time I used it. Returned it for another one....got the same results!! Readings much lower than refractometer.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.
